Re: [LegacyUG] Cleanup
The most important thing that everyone needs to do, preferably from the start, is to be consistent. Define how you want to hold information in locations, events, media, sources etc. If you have not done that you will start finding differences on how you hold information. The problem is that you will need then to go through and change information to fit a standard format. It is difficult but it can be done; I am gradually working through my system, nearly 16000 people, to bring them inline. For a small file it could be possible to remove and recreate, but generally you just have to go through and fix. But, first, set the standards that you need before making any changes. Re: [LegacyUG] Cleanup
Recently I printed a family group sheet. After reading it I noticed it was a mess. My sentences were inconsistent, for example, my census info is all over the place. I have simple spelling errors on words like census, cemetery, etc. I have a number of other issues. Here's my question. Where do I start to clean up my mess. I toyed with the idea of wiping everything out and starting over. Not really convinced that's the way to go. I am leaning towards going into the master list and starting there. That too seems to be a big job. Can I get some suggestions if you have ever dealt with this? I have had to do some major editing from time to time - when I have changed my mind about how to present some information, for example. First of all, I would say don't panic about the amount of work you need to do, just plan to take it slow and steady and tackle one thing at a time. Starting with a Master List is a good idea. Select one - perhaps the Location list, and gradually work through it, combining duplicates and correcting spelling errors. If there's a LOT to do, plan to just tackle a certain number each session. That way you will keep achieving small goals and be encouraged to carry on. You might want to work on the Event Definition list in a similar way, modifying the way some Sentences read to suit the way you want to present information When it comes to making changes to specific people's records, use the Search function to find all the people you need to work on, then apply an unused Tag number to the list. As you correct the records, untag each person. Then you can repeat this for a different set of people. Hope that gives you a few ideas. -- Jenny M Benson Wrexham, UK -- LegacyUserGroup mailing list LegacyUserGroup@legacyusers.com To manage your subscription and unsubscribe http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com Archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/
