Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy and Chromebook

2013-11-14 Thread Ron Taylor
I noticed that there is a remote control app for Chromebooks that has some good
ratings.  That could be used to access your Windows computer through the
internet.  Since the app is written for Chrome it would likely work much better
than the RealVNC or other remote control software.

Legacy only runs in a Microsoft Windows environment.  Chromebooks run Chrome OS
which is essentially the Chrome browser with a keyboard.  Anything that runs
under Chrome like Google Docs will work on the Chromebook.  Legacy is not
browser based so it will not work under Chrome OS.  It is unlikely that
Chromebooks will ever run a "virtual machine" in which Windows might operate.
The answer is NO to Windows based programs.

Wendy,

As you may have read elsewhere Chromebook uses the Chrome o/s which I am pretty
sure is not the same as Android.

I would, therefore, not expect Families to run.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy and Chromebook

2013-10-24 Thread James Cook
You could remote to a Windows PC. I am not familiar enough with
Chromebook's either, but the app store lists VNC Viewer, and I've read that
Splashtop for Chromebook should be coming soon. With this sort of app, you
can have your PC running at home, and then connect to it remotely via the
cloud with your Chromebook. In theory at at least, you could launch Legacy
at home remotely while out and about at the library or on the road doing
research. The up side is no sync is necessary, you work in your own DB.
I've seen Splashtop work (not for legacy) but its interface brings your
windows desktop to your tablet as if you were sitting at your PC at home.

But if that's the case (that a Chromebook runs Android) then you could
use the Families app, which syncs with Legacy.

You can start a new family file in Families, so do not have to start
with a Legacy file if you don't have access to a Windows machine -
though if you have a Legacy file, but no longer have a Windows machine,
you might like to ask a friend with a Windows machine to help with
getting your data into Families in the first place.

Hope this helps. :-)

Chrome OS is a Linux-based operating system designed by Google to work

A short followup.  This article talks about future possibility that Windows may
be possible on the Chromebook.

The chromebook does not run Microsoft Windows but has its own operating system.
It is great for internet browsing if you like the chrome browser and can use
the google cloud based applications.  If they ever develop a virtual machine
that might run Windows then Windows based applications might run on it.  Legacy
is Windows based.  The other possibility is that an app might be developed to
run on it like those available for iPad.Ron Taylor

I
would be interested to know if anyone has used Legacy on either the new
Chromebook or Chromebox computers. See Dick Eastman's recent articles. Pros and
cons especially desired.
