How often does that happen as these updates actually go back a few months
now.

Re: [Lensfun-users] In-camera correction

2018-01-15 Thread John J Bloomfield
Just to clarify as a Pentax owner I can clarify - lens correction only
applies to the JPEG not the RAW.

Sometimes I shoot RAW+ with lens correction on just so I can compare how
good the profile is vs the manufacturer correction on the jpeg.

With Pentax RAW is RAW.

Re: [Lensfun-users] Is lensfun still ongoing?

2018-01-08 Thread John J Bloomfield
Hi Sebastian,

Thanks for replying. I really appreciate it.

Forgive my ignorance though, can I ask your role in the project?

I am always happy to supply images - I am not up to speed enough though
with the code etc. to do any calibrations. I am not 'inept' I can write
HTML, PHP and a bit of java but I only work on windows.

I would do calibrations if there were some good tutorials for Windows users
(videos preferred), everything I've been able to find is based on linux and
perl.

There are now a huge number of windows users of the database and they could
be useful. I only use two programs that use lensfun for their lens
corrections - ACDsee Ultimate and Affinity Photo - updating both is simply
a matter of dropping updated files and overwriting the ones in the current
directory within the software as I think they both simply use the XML files
and not "lensfun" itself, I assume this flexibility is why XML was chosen
in the first place.

The tarball is the ideal solution for windows users, a download page with
archive and changelog being perfect but just a visible 'last updated' date
would make a big difference. I would be happy to help with this I have
space on one of my own servers (I have a very small webdesign sideline) and
would be happy to host and update the zip/tarballs and changelog etc. if
that would help though I appreciate it might just cause more confusion -
including such a thing on sourceforge would probably be better.

If I can help to give things a kickstart I would be happy to do so but as I
said as a windows user I'd need some help in getting going.

Many thanks

John

[Lensfun-users] Is lensfun still ongoing?

2018-01-08 Thread John J Bloomfield
Hi All

Before I start this message I want to 100% acknowledge that I know this
project is run entirely by volunteers in their own time and therefore I
have no right to expect anything.

However, So that I can make informed decisions about which software to
stick with or abandon I have to ask is this project still running?

I queried on this list when I found it about two weeks ago to try and find
out if the tarball at http://wilson.bronger.org/lensfun-db/version_1.tar.bz2
is being maintained for windows user to use for updates, but have still had
no official response.

One volunteer Junkyardsparkle did come back to me to say they didn't know
and generally be very helpful so I submitted some images to try and help
plug some gaps this gave me access to the github and I can see that since
the 6th November 2017 nobody other than junkyardsparkle has picked up a
calibration job - so this leads me to wondering is the project dead?

If it is it is a real shame and I hope someone picks it up, maybe one of
the commercial entities that use it could buy it and move it forward in the
longer term but for general users like myself it would be really helpful to
know;

   - Is the tarball being updated/maintained? (an alert to the mailing list
when it is would be very helpful)
   - Is it worth continuing uploading calibration images? As if the project
is stalled they will never make it through to us at the user end so perhaps
we would be better off lokking for alternative software.

Once again regardless of your responses, I thank the founders and all
volunteers for the work done to date.

Approximately how long does it take from submitting images to a profile
making it in to the database?

Re: [Lensfun-users] Latest Database Files For Windows Users

2017-12-31 Thread John J Bloomfield
Hi Jys,

Thanks for the response - are you part of the dev team?

I can see that the files are available but I am a working photographer
rather than a techie so I hesitate to use those files.

I use ACDsee and Affinity photo both of which rely on lensfun so I've only
recently become aware of the database when a lens profile I needed wasn't
available - but it was listed on lesnfun - it was actually really simple
using that tarball to update the software. I have now though just upgraded
to a Pentax K-1 and there are very few lens profiles available. I have a
load of lenses so I was going to just drive down to a local retail park and
shoot a set of calibration images for each - then hopefully they'll filter
through to the tarball and I can update my software but from the thread
where the tarball was first mentioned it is unclear if it was just an idea
or if it is being maintained (and indeed how to tell when it is updated)

I would really like to help strengthen the database with profiles for
Pentax as it seems all the real competition for Adobe products rely on it
and I don't really want to switch to Adobe - I like the stuff I use. (I do
hope that they've donated to the project as they so clearly rely on it)

[Lensfun-users] Latest Database Files For Windows Users

2017-12-28 Thread John J Bloomfield
Hi

I use several windows programs that use the lensfun database and it is a
simple job to manually update them.

I did it a couple of months ago using the folder located at
http://wilson.bronger.org/lensfun-db/version_1.tar.bz2 as mentioned in one
of the project mailing list archives

But I am now wondering is that folder/file being updated or was it just an
idea that isn't being maintained? If it is being maintained perhaps it
would be a good idea to make the link more obviously available? If it is
not being maintained then how does one obtain the most up to date database
files for the purposes of updateing a windows program?

Many Thanks for all your hard work.

John
