Re: Please consider becoming a Leo dev, even if you aren't a programmer

2018-03-14 Thread Chris George
I recommended SLack because we used it in the 2015 federal election to
manage my campaign with excellent results.

Never even got close to the limitations of the free account, but it
certainly assisted us in organizing the volunteers and pushing
information.

A big benefit was its searchability. Things move fast in a campaign
and being able to find the answers quickly was important.

8ab89ca continues this work by replacing glob.glob by g.glob_glob
everywhere in Leo's core. This ensures that the file names returned by
glob.glob match the "regularized" names used elsewhere.

Remaining uses of glob.glob:

1. Several files in leo/external continue to use the "raw" glob.glob
because they don't have assured access to leoGlobals.py.

2. launchLeo-unified.spec remains exactly as it was. Gratuitous changes to
scripts like this are not recommended.

As often happens, I have done the work directly in devel so as to find
problems as quickly as possible.

One would assume that these changes will have no effect whatever on
platforms other than Windows, but one never knows.

Please report any problems immediately.

I'm not a programmer, but I've accomplished programming things and even
contributed something worthwhile to Leo's install experience. Well maybe
now I could use the "p" word, but that certainly wasn't true when I started
with Leo! I've written things that do work and some other people have
re-used some of my stuff. Leo and it's community helped me get here.

Python is easy to learn. After that, becoming acquainted with Leo's code

Well, python is easy, but programming itself is still hard! Eminently
worthwhile though. The satisfactory glow that comes from *finally*
producing a bit of code that does something useful, however small, even
minuscule, can last for days.

I did post a follow up qualifier that referenced this. Did that not make it
through? (there have been reports of missing posts in recent weeks).

OT: A better way to code, by Mike Bostock

2018-03-14 Thread Matt Wilkie
I'm continually in awe of Mike Bostock's work, c.f. Data Driven Documents (
d3.org). Impressive as that is, it's his power to clearly explain data,
visualization and programming in cohesive bundle that transforms my
thinking which impresses me most. I've not yet learned to do anything
substantive in javascript, but reading Bostock's material has given me
insight into own python projects. And a thirst to do more!

Just, wow.

I forgot to mention that the apply/open_theme_file commands now *close* the

that the theme is fully applied.

Not sure this hack will stay...

e0615b0: A major update re paths

2018-03-14 Thread Edward K. Ream
This is a significant change because it changes backslashes to slashes on
Windows. As a result, cache entries may miss the first time you reload .leo
files. Please report any problems immediately.

Here is the checkin log:

Fixed two related bugs: #663 and #809, and improved
c_file.apply/open_theme_file.

#809: Themes dialog doesn't always start in leo/themes.
- qt_gui.py: Fixed bugs in qt_gui.runOpenFileDialog.

Fixed #663: Regularize slashes and back slashes
- This will invalidate caches the first time.
- Search for g.isWindows to see affected code.
- Added g.isWindows and g.isMac constants at start of leoGlobals.py.
- All relevant g.os_path* methods replace backslashes with slashes in file
names.
- Tweaked a few unit tests.

Please consider becoming a Leo dev, even if you aren't a programmer

2018-03-14 Thread Edward K. Ream
Yesterday I had an Aha. It's time to start training Leo devs (developers)!
Leo's present devs are busy doing great work. We can't ask them to do more.

Leo's to-do list

has over 150 items. If you want one of those items, please consider adding
it yourself, *even if you aren't a programmer.* I'll teach you python and
Leo's internals.

Python is easy to learn. After that, becoming acquainted with Leo's code
base will be easier than you might think.

*Summary*

If you have ever wanted to be a programmer, now is a great time ;-) I'll be
happy to answer *all *your questions.

Training new devs will pay off handsomely (for me) in the long term.

Edward

P. S. From the fascinating 2018 Stack Overflow Developer Survey:

"For the sixth year in a row, JavaScript is the most commonly used
programming language. Python has risen in the ranks, surpassing C# this
year, much like it surpassed PHP last year. Python has a solid claim to
being the fastest-growing major programming language
."

Please post comments about Leo on SourceForge

2018-03-14 Thread Edward K. Ream
The two most recent comments about Leo on Leo's SourceForge page
are clueless and insulting. I know
of no way to have them removed.

Please add your own comment so that the two unhelpful comments will move
down and become less visible.

This is going to be an issue as long as I make announcements to
SourceForge, which I plan doing even after releasing only on github.

Thanks for your help.

1fe0df: Leo now reports current directory on startup

2018-03-14 Thread Edward K. Ream
This rev happened yesterday. The log pane now reports home dir: .

That os.path.abspath(os.curdir), which is actually os.path.abspath('.').

This should clarify some path-related issues.
