localedef failure with -v option

2009-04-25 Thread Lefteris Dimitroulakis
hello lfsdevs
Using -v option with localedef is failing emitting
no output file produced because warnings were issued.
This is happening during the build of svn-lfs or stable-lfs
and on a finished lfs system as well.
My question is how safe can we feel if this
happening during the build of
apparently every possible locale?

regards
Lefteris

PS
If this is already discussed in the lists
please disregard this message and

 Hi all,

Just thought I'd drop a note on the pending package updates I've assigned to
myself. I have patches to the book for all of these now.

However, as expected by looking at ticket #2322, there's slight issues with
Groff-1.20.1 and its interaction with Man-DB-2.5.3.

I've put some screenshots up at
 http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/~matthew/test-results/, which show the various
 problems.

For your info:
Groff-1.20.1 with MAN-1.6f don't have the problem shown in

 Hi,

It looks like a typo, the command should probably be:
 localedef -i zh_CN -f GB18030 zh_CN.GB18030

 I've posted a ticket as well #2279

 Trent.

But of course is a typo and as such I reported,
but you know english is not among my strong points
and I allways have to pay more attention.

We probably need to put a note into the book that the man pages are updated
relatively frequently and the latest version can probably be used without
 issues.

 Thoughts?

 NAK.

The table in the text is really a copy of a table in Man-DB source, because
the expectations of Man-DB can't be changed. With Man, the encoding
expectations depend on NROFF and JNROFF lines. So, you can't really suggest
this without knowing how DJ Lucas is going to configure Man. Your
suggestion is obviously valid if one uses the default NROFF line (and thus
avoids groff-utf8) and a non-UTF-8 locale. However, this is obviously
different from the expected future direction.

With all due respect to lfs-dev's, to you and to the holly book,
it will be very bizarre if lfsbook uses the Man package
and at the same time is claiming
that the included in the package man-pages
are NOT readable for whatever reason.
And yes, I use the default /etc/man.conf.
and my personal files for configuration needed in order
to read man-pages in the encoding of my preference,
legacy or utf8.

Let's clarify the situation a bit. There are three possible outcomes for
man foo in the ru_RU.UTF-8 locale:

 1) Glibberish (unacceptable, but, unfortunately, what happens if the system
is misconfigured by an English-speaking editor who doesn't know how to test
 the configuration)
 2) No such manual page (well, OK if it indeed doesn't exist)
 3) English manpage (acceptable, although not ideal)
 4) Russian manpage.

Reaching (4) means non-default configuration of Man that has to be
explained. Explanation means understanding by editors. Are you sure that
English-speaking editors have motivation to understand all the details and
can immediately see their errors? Do you know that, in the past, some
English-speaking readers refused to follow the new book after magic (from
their viewpoint, i.e., not understandable) changes in man setup happened
and magic patches were added to coreutils, grep and diffutils, and that
we lost some editors due to the same reason? Such magic patches undermine
the educational nature of the book. You see - there is a fundamental
conflict between 100% correct and educational, so a proposal is being
made to adopt a suboptimal, but easily understandable setup. (no offense
meant to English-speaking editors and readers in this paragraph)
I see what you mean, but I am afraid I agree with the idea of not
altering system files in /etc dir if it is possible.
What is needed for localization I prefer having it in my personal
files and this is not in the responsibility of the lfs-dev editor to
prepare it for me the lfsuser.
I use for example a trick -stolen from you- in my .bash_profile.
MANPAGER=/usr/bin/iconv -c -f ISO8859-7 | /usr/bin/less -isR
and works perfectly in el_GR.ISO-8859-7 or el_GR.UTF-8 locale.
Root has always the defaults: the C locale.
So: do you mean it will be very bizarre if lfsbook uses the Man package
and at the same time produces glibberish (which I agree with) or it will
be very bizarre if lfsbook uses the Man package and at the same time
patches it to never display translated manual pages, even though they are
 installed?

And yes, I use the default /etc/man.conf.
and my personal files for configuration needed in order
to read man-pages in the encoding of my preference,
  legacy or utf8.

Very interesting, however, on my system, no packages installed Greek manual
pages. Where you got them from, except the man package (that doesn't
install them if one passes +lang none)?
Man package contains man-pages in greek among other languages,
and I use the option +lang all in my builds.
For the messages in UTF-8 env. I create from the existing catalogues
in legacy enc. the utf8 one's and then man is finding his way with the
help of the NLSPATH env variable contained in my .bash_profile.

I'm not sure what it does with other inputs, but it is there for when

vim

2006-11-30 Thread Lefteris Dimitroulakis
Hi lfs-dev
Please consider changing the lines after
make install
to something like:
In any locale, programme vimtutor tries to find a translation
of tutor in the appropriate language and encoding. If it fails to do so,
it loads a copy of the tutor in english

Lines ...vim-7.0-lang.tar.gz...
are only confusing for the subject of tutor and
should be removed, I think.

Now, since we have already applied huge patch 14.patch
which contains greek and russian translations of tutor in UTF-8 enc
next commande can be changed to:
rm -fv /usr/share/vim/vim70/tutor/tutor.{pl,sk} .

I do not know about the iana-etc but for the other packages
your build order looks like following the rule :
try to reduce the influence of tools as soon and as much as possible
under ch6.
This is a very reasonable way of thinking for me specially if it is
combined with an other rule:
try to reduce the influence of the host as soon and as much as possible
under ch5.
