We ( The Calyx Institute ) submitted a proposal to build a network of XMPP servers that by default force people to use TLS/SSL and OTR and to allow people to connect via Tor hidden services. We also propose to modify XMPP clients to do TLS/SSL and OTR by default. Citizen Lab submitted the following proposal Safeguarding the Fourth Estate: Teaching digital security and privacy to journalists Although the work of journalists is essential to the public interest, the widespread adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has both enabled and endangered journalistic practices. While the ability to digitally communicate with sources and colleagues is easier than ever there are a growing number of ways to compromise these communications. This project will strengthen the capacity of journalists to conduct their work with greater appreciation for privacy and security of ICTs. It will create knowledge and resources for digital security training, increasing awareness of digital privacy and ways to secure it. Finally it will promote uptake of these resources to further the education of the next generation of journalists. https://www.newschallenge.org/challenge/2014/submissions/safeguarding-the-fourth-estate-teaching-digital-security-and-privacy-to-journalists Cheers Ron On 2014-03-19, at 10:21 AM, Nicholas Merrill wrote: We ( The Calyx Institute ) submitted a proposal to build a network of XMPP servers that by default force people to use TLS/SSL and OTR and to allow people to connect via Tor hidden services. Advox submitted the following proposal: *Threatened Voices: Tracking victims of online repression* Threatened Voices (TV) is a unique collaborative mapping project by Global Voices Advocacy to build a database of online people who are threatened, arrested or killed for speaking out online and to draw attention to campaigns that highlight their cause. We are building a database that is of use for international advocacy. We are collaborating with Amnesty, CPJ, UNESCO, Media Legal Defense Initia, and other international and local partners. We are also building a methodology that meshes with other human rights reporting standards. This project aspires to become a reliable resource on the violation of the right to freedom of expression online that can be used by researchers, advocates and activists internationally. We hope we can count on the support of this community. We truly believe that if successful, this can become a powerful tool for activists and researchers alike.
