[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 96401] FILEOPEN: DOCX - Specific file reported as corrupted (openable in MSO but not in other programs because of unzip error, backslash "\" as filename separator)

2023-11-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=96401

So: you are able to open the file, *if* you open it using an *explicitly
selected* DOCX filter in the Open dialog.

Why it fails when opened normally:
1. It uses a normal auto-detect procedure.
2. In it, it iterates all filters, asking each to try to detect the file.
3. In the list, DOCX filters happen to come prior to ODF ones ...
4. But DOCX filters, when encountering the ZIP error, fail silently
5. While ODF ones, when see the same ZIP error, produce the warning, and then
proceed with the procedure from comment 23 - which is described by "We don't do
any type detection on broken packages (f.e. because it might be impossible),
so for repairing we'll use the requested type, which was detected by the flat
detection" comment there.

Which makes LibreOffice use an ODF filter unconditionally on this file, which
finally expectedly fails elsewhere.

The problem is: we need to handle the ZIP error early, and introduce the repair
mode early, still keeping the autodetection with it. Because it won't help to
allow DOCX filters do the same as ODF, which would then disallow broken ODF
opening - DOCX would intercept them then, and the problem would be reversed.

Dear tmacalp,

To make sure we're focusing on the bugs that affect our users today,
LibreOffice QA is asking bug reporters and confirmers to retest open, confirmed
bugs which have not been touched for over a year.

There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this
bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the
details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in
getting confirmation that the bug is still present.

If you have time, please do the following:

Test to see if the bug is still present with the latest version of LibreOffice
from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/

If the bug is present, please leave a comment that includes the information
from Help - About LibreOffice.

If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to
RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a comment that includes the information from Help
- About LibreOffice.

Please DO NOT

Update the version field
Reply via email (please reply directly on the bug tracker)
Set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED - FIXED (this status has a particular
meaning that is not
appropriate in this case)

If you want to do more to help you can test to see if your issue is a
REGRESSION. To do so:
1. Download and install oldest version of LibreOffice (usually 3.3 unless your
bug pertains to a feature added after 3.3) from
https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

2. Test your bug
3. Leave a comment with your results.
4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo';
4b. If the bug was not present in 3.3 - add 'regression' to keyword

The problem is that createUnoListener doesn't return anything. You should
check existence of the return value before adding it as a listener.

That said, the LO code shouldn't allow an empty listener. Code fix for that

This can be considered solved as I wrote a patch that re-enables the use of
medium/full hint style and Caolán McNamara was kind enough to give me some
hints and support so that the patch was accepted.
So, in the next LO release it should be possible to set the new environment
variable SAL_ALLOW_DEFAULT_HINTING to some arbitrary value (it's just checked
that it is not undefined) and then the hinting style defined "outside" of
libreoffice will be used. E.g. in Linux you would set via X resources, e.g.
define the line

Xft.hintstyle:hintmedium

in $HOME/.Xdefaults for medium hinting and call "xrdb -merge $HOME/.Xdefaults"
(or just log out and in again).
I don't know how to do that in macOS or Windows, but Google should help here.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 158354] LibreOffice Writer footnotes have bad styling in MS Word

2023-11-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=158354

Update: I managed to narrow down the issue. It appears that it's related to the
"Automatic" check-boxes in the style settings (Footnote Characters -> Position
and Footnote -> Indents and Spacing -> First line). When they're disabled and
instead a specific value is added, then Word correctly displays the footnotes.
I'm not sure if it's a LO bug, or these "Automatic" check-boxes are something
new in LO so Word need to catch up with compatibility...
Anyway... when saving in .docx, LO can set "hard values" to these settings,
with which Word can display correctly.

There's another mishandling and it's with the separator line. When the file is
saved as .docx, the separator line gets "Default Paragraph Style", and often in
academic writing the line spacing is 1.5, and thus in Word the footnote
separator line becomes overpadded. It'd be great if LO figures a way to avoid
these misplacements, since footnote interoperability between office suites is
something really important, depending on the usage case.

Perhaps the file name of the shortcut could be composed with the path of the

For example :
"c_program_files_LibreOffice_program_quickstart".

In my case, the previous 7.0 and 7.2 versions and the new 7.3 version would use
the same file name of the shortcut. There would be only one shortcut.

Hmm. filter/source/storagefilterdetect/filterdetect.cxx has the code to do
exactly that [1]; and so, it is the wrong implementation (or a breakage) of
what was implemented in 426a2f22678f89706b4db474243ab27b4a4d6c06.

Since commit fa66eeb587f11bea88ab5950ffd94aee221d6b31, there is a "recovery
mode" in ZIP package, triggered by "RepairPackage" media descriptor property
[1].

Since commit 426a2f22678f89706b4db474243ab27b4a4d6c06 (for #i104759#), this
mode also handles the backslashes in packages (it is done explicitly to handle
this problem).

The missing bit is to make sure that, when such a situation is detected during
the load, and a warning is shown to the user asking to try to *repair*, we
don't switch to the recovery mode.

I don't understand what you mean, you just did it.

Also , you can paste the clipboard content in Gimp and export it as a png or
jpeg file.
If you're on Windows, you can paste in Paint.
In brief, you don't need Libreoffice to put the screenshot.

> Please try opening it in Word. Depending if you open it in Word directly,

This is completely uninteresting. Whatever Word does on opening ODF, if they
are unable to open it properly, it is their bug. Please file it to Microsoft,
and please avoid discussing it here, because it makes this issue cluttered with
unrelated stuff, and makes it harder to really improve what we *can* improve.

> or you save it in .docx beforehand, the lost stylistics is different.

Please also provide a screenshot, comparing what you get in LibreOffice vs. in
Word, *marking* the differences; and also provide a textual description of the
issues, e.g. "I see different size of footnote number in the footnote area".
This would enable to discuss specific issues. Something like "here is a
document; go and compare things yourself, and make it ideal, quick!" is not
going to work ;)

I debugged it and I think you should just replace:
myPO.ExportToPOTFile("myFile.pot", Header := "First line of the header\nSecond
line of the header")
by:
myPO.ExportToPOTFile("c:\myFile.pot", Header := "First line of the
header\nSecond line of the header")

I mean, on Linux, when putting:
myPO.ExportToPOTFile("/tmp/myFile.pot", Header := "First line of the
header\nSecond line of the header")

I got a myFile.pot in /tmp containing:
#
# This pristine POT file has been generated by LibreOffice/ScriptForge
# Full documentation is available on https://help.libreoffice.org/
#
# First line of the header
# Second line of the header

I gave a try here:

As indicated in commit message, I also removed "Protocol:" since it's also
useless now.

I wonder if the blank space at the middle is useful.
