Large hard disk in Libretto 70CT
Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 22:40:53 -0700 From: "Bill Childers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Large hard disk in Libretto 70CT Hi, Just got my Libretto 70CT, and I'm trying to shoehorn in another hard disk. It came with the IBM 1.6, and I've got a IBM 3.2 and a 6.4 here. The 3.2 slides right in and the Libretto recognizes it and fires right up. The 6.4 continually gives me "system file not found" errors. I've got the same image of the OS "ghosted" on both drives, and the 6.4GB drive boots fine when hooked to a desktop via an adapter. The 70 is on BIOS revision 6.40. I can swap the 1.6 and the 3.2 with no problem. Has anyone seen this? If so, what's the fix? See, analog and digital phones, even in the same family such as StarTac, have different cables. And very definately the cables aren't just adapters. Digital phones and analog have very proprietary connectors. The $130 ( OUCH ) cable for my digital StarTac seems to be a modem which connects the serial port to the phone. Yes, I meant that. It's a modem that uses the StarTac to get to the phone line. So, the best idea is to pick your favorite phone and pony up the money for their very special cable. I will report pretty good results with Bell Telephone... uh... New York Telephone... uh... NYNEX Mobile... uh... Bell Atlantic... uh... Verizon Wireless' digital data service. They have their own ISP for you to use ( or feel free to use your own ), and I connect at 19,200 typically. Nothing like Japan's handphones which slip into a PCMCIA socket and give you 57,600. Win98 needs at least 64MB of RAM to feel peachy, and with only 32MB on a L50, you're really giving yourself pain. Only way around it? Strip Win98 of IE (use Netscape or Opera instead) with 98lite.net's program, and you'll easily gain back all the performance loss and extra RAM, while saving yourself around 100MB of HD space that IE once took. I've had it going on a 133Mhz desktop with 32MB of RAM, and I was happily suprised by how zippy W98 after 98Lite ran on it - very good performance and response. Beyond that, back to W95 or DOS. d =) = adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? I removed the plastic spacers underneath, and didnt have to short any pins to have it work. The only annoyance now is that without installing driver software (which I have yet to find), only 8Gb of the drive can be used in windows. If I cant find a driver (though I know some exist), I will use the remaining 4Gb for Linux. Even with the use of a driver, the Libretto puts its suspend data at what it thinks is the end of the disk (about 8Gb), so to use all the space, 2 partitions are required. Win98 vs Win95 on an L50
Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 09:39:47 -0400 From: "Eiren K. Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Win98 vs Win95 on an L50 I have an admittedly nebulous problem. My L50 has 32MB of RAM, is overclocked to 100MHz, and has a new 6GB Toshiba drive. I used to run Win95 on it with DriveSpace compression on my 810MB original drive. When I upgraded my hard drive, I decided to move to Win98 (with a FAT32). The machine now feels significantly slower than ever. I expected Win98 to run slower than Win95, but it is so much slower that I wonder if there's something else wrong. The machine actually feels slower than it did with Win95's DriveSpace running heavily all the time (resulting in major disk access). At first, I handled a driver problem with the Libretto floppy drive. That handled a HUGE slow waiting for it to sense the floppy drive (which would inevitably fail anyway). However, it still doesn't feel "right". Now, many times I'll press a button in a dialog box and I'll have to wait for sometimes more than ten seconds to even see the button be pressed. During this wait, the hard drive is seldom, if ever, being accessed. It's not like with Win95 and my old 810MB hard drive (with or without DriveSpace), where the disk would be accessed furiously if the machine was making me wait. I'm hoping someone else has run into this and that there a there's a solution. I could, of course, go back to Win95 with this new hard drive to see if it's a perculiar problem with the new hard drive, but I'd rather not have to do this. Anyone have any experience? -e. ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **
OK, getting my lazy arse out and buying a big HD
Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 13:37:05 GMT From: "Eugene Hsu" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: OK, getting my lazy arse out and buying a big HD Well per the subject, I believe it is now time for me to upgrade my Libretto's HD. I have the 70CT, and since I have been on this list, we all speak of the 9.5 mm drives fitting. The only problem seemed to be that memory chips were becoming unsocketed(?) for some people with the 70CT and a 9.5 mm drive. Since 8.45 mm drives are rare (and not cheap it seems), I figured that I would get a 12GB 9.5 mm drive. I hope that will not happen to me, but I was wondering if anyone had opinions on the following: Onsale has a 12 GB drive now for $222.99 Toshiba MK1214GAP 12GB ATA/66 HD-2.5LP 9.5MM 13MS 4200RPM http://www.egghead.com/category/inv/00058614/02834018.htm I think this is the one where the two pins need to be jumpered to get the drive to master mode. Can anyone confirm this? They also have the 12GB IBM drive for $214.99 TRAVELSTAR 12GN 12.0G HD-ATA/66 4200 RPM 9MM http://www.egghead.com/category/inv/00062895/02941692.htm I think this is the one where a few people have had problems with memory chips. Anyone have any opinions regarding either drive or preferences, please respond to the group. 8) Thanks, -Eugene- Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **

Re: L50: Trouble with 6GB drive. BIOS-related?

Yes, but this was a scandisk at boot time (text mode) due to not shutting down properly. Still true? -e. -Original Message- From: David Chien <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Libretto <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Sunday, June 18, 2000 2:40 PM Subject: Re: L50: Trouble with 6GB drive.
