When I got my Garmin 3+, I told my wife it has highway rest stops
in the built in database. That justified the purchase right there!

From my experiences driving in Az this is a vital function...in the UK you
can hide behind a bush, but on most of the roads in AZ you're visible for
*miles* (and probably from satellite as well!)

'Are you aware of the speed limit here sir?'
'Yes. Are you aware of hydraulic pressure, officer?'

Another option might be to use software for your GPS receiver.

For instance, for my Garmin III+ I purchased Garmin's World Map
Mapsource which has some low level of mapping detail. It
downloads data to my Garmin, and has some utility on the
pc for route planning which also is uploaded.

I think you can assume that you won't get street level
detail for other locations than the US. We Americans just
wouldn't rest until the USGS mapped every highway, local road,
goat path, etc., and released it to the public domain.
Our maps are very complete. Try getting that level of detail
anywhere else, I haven't seen it. So don't expect too much
detail for your maps.

John Shepardson

Seems there's a good business opportunity for the UK Ordnance Survey (the
best (ahem) maps in the world)...but I suspect that they're probably
military secrets.

When Fylingdales early warning radar on the North Yorkshire Moors was built,
it had three huge geodesic weather domes - visible as huge white golfballs
from most of the moors. But they weren't on the OS maps...military secret,
you see...

Libretto 50CT in Distress

Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 08:22:21 -
From: Martin Drinkwater [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Libretto 50CT in Distress

Hello Peeps,
Have posted a message before about my problem with my Lib 50CT, I only
Received one back (Thankyou) but it did not help.

My Lib 50CT has developed a fault with the display.
It has gone a funny shade of green and there is 1mm vertical lines all
accross the screen.
You can see the desktop in the background, but it becomes difficult to work.
And of course, being lucky enough to own one of these fantastic machines, I
want it to work ok.

Now I have two options.

To get help to repair it, to send it for repair (where, I don't know !!)

Or to sell it for spares, which is my very last option !

I have tried what the one person who responded to my last message said to
try, which is the screen cable plug underneath the right hand side of the
keyboard, he said it was a funny kind of fit.
No change, but thankyou anyway.

Please help a dedicated Libretto user in distress ???

From: "neil barnes" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: Libretto 50CT in Distress

Martin,

Does the video output from the expander port work ok? If so, and everything
else seems ok, then the display is probably buggered. Though if you're
feeling enthusiastic, you could check all the leads in the display half of
the box. It's a little tricky to get in but not insurmountable if you're
careful (particularly removing the plastic covers on the bottom front of the
display) and you have watchmakers screwdrivers.

Jason Savage has a pdf of the tech manual on his page at
http://members.home.net/jpsavage/index.html which has all the gory details.

If all else fails...um...I have a dead lib with a working screen which I'm
keen to get working again - daughter wants it to take to Argentina for her
university stuff. I don't want to sell it (even if I never get the bottom
half working, it's a spare for me!) but you could borrow it to decide which
bits work...or if you do want to sell for spares perhaps we could come to an
arrangement?

Cheers, Neil

Battery times

2001-02-27 Thread Dave's Libretto

Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 12:51:16 -
From: "Dave's Libretto" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Battery times

Hi All,

I noticed that the spec for the lib 100 standard battery are supposed to be
2hrs. Well I wouldnt expect to ever have got this, but I usually get about
30mins of battery time out of my machine when reading email over a network
card (supposed to be low power) with the screen on low brightness. Is my
battery shot? Is there a good way to give it a little more life other than
to use it less? Is there a special way to recharge Li batteries, or can they
be left on constant trickle?
Any input or URL's to visit welcome...

Cheers

Dave

Martin,

The only 3 possibilities are;
* Video driver is corrupt - reload
* Cable is loose or has dirty contacts - remove re-insert several
times.
* Graphics chip or LCD controller is shot - spare parts.

 Subject: Libretto 50CT in Distress

 Hello Peeps,
Have posted a message before about my problem with my Lib 50CT,
 I only
Received one back (Thankyou) but it did not help.

My Lib 50CT has developed a fault with the display.
It has gone a funny shade of green and there is 1mm vertical
 lines all
 accross the screen.
You can see the desktop in the background, but it becomes
 difficult to work.
And of course, being lucky enough to own one of these fantastic
 machines, I
 want it to work ok.

 Now I have two options.

To get help to repair it, to send it for repair (where, I don't
 know !!)

Or to sell it for spares, which is my very last option !

I have tried what the one person who responded to my last
 message said to
try, which is the screen cable plug underneath the right hand
 side of the
keyboard, he said it was a funny kind of fit.
 No change, but thankyou anyway.

Please help a dedicated Libretto user in distress ???

 Regards

 Martin Drinkwater

It's a little tricky to get in but not insurmountable if
you're careful (particularly removing the plastic covers on the bottom
front of the display) and you have watchmakers screwdrivers.

Jason Savage has a pdf of the tech manual on his page at
http://members.home.net/jpsavage/index.html which has all the gory details.

Neil,

I'm interested in swappping the LCD screen from my old 50CT into the 70CT I
just bought. But I was having problems accessing the information in the
technicl manual on the website you mention. Is it possible to download that
entire manual somewhere? I'll keep tgrying to access it on this website you
mention, but the download speed for the file is really slow for me.

but all I saw was the archives reference! If the pointer is buried
somewhere in the archives, is there any you can give us a hint exactly
where that needle is in the haystack?

Tom

Tom,

I haven't finished going through list mail to see if this has been addressed
yet or not, but the searchable archive is at:

   http://www.technoir.nu/libretto/list/

However I wasn't able to find anything when entering the term VCDROM or the
terms "Virtual CD-ROM", or "virtual CD ROM". It must be there somewhere.

Sorry to be a dweeb, but could you provide a link to either the digest or
the VCDROM site? I am new to this topic and I don't have all the links
 catalogued as yet.
There are quite a few of tools available:
-Farstone Virtual Drive - most used, not designed for WinNT/2000 but works
limited to 1 vitual cd-drive, prevents external CD drive to be plugged
(requres reboot to be recognised).
-Microtest Vcdrom - now v3.07 most complete bundle with advanced editing
features. Blocks hibernate/standby in W2k.
-VirtuoCD - small, NT/2k only, no cd image compression option.
-Paragon CD emulator - my choice (works properly in W2k), no image editing
features yet.
There are several others I came across but those either crashed my system or
not install.
To find them go to any software archive: zdnet, softseek...
Here just some links:

Your disorder is more advanced than mine ;-) It is not a big deal for me if
concept is explained at all. Personally I quit at "It may be easily

domain of your interest here) book" next to half-page formula.

'From here it is intuitively obvious'
'it is left as an exercise for the reader'

I gave up on a fourier analysis text some years ago which basically said:
Primer [six pages maths] therefore [ten pages maths] from which we deduce
[ten pages gibberish]...

US version of L100/110 comes with extended battery as standard. It's rated
as 3 ~ 5 hours. My Japanese version L100 came with smaller battery that is
rated 1.5 ~ 2 hours.

 Subject: Battery times

 Hi All,

I noticed that the spec for the lib 100 standard battery are
supposed to be
2hrs. Well I wouldnt expect to ever have got this, but I usually
get about
30mins of battery time out of my machine when reading email over a
network
card (supposed to be low power) with the screen on low brightness.
Is my
battery shot? Is there a good way to give it a little more life
other than
to use it less? Is there a special way to recharge Li batteries,
or can they
 be left on constant trickle?
Any input or URL's to visit welcome...

 Cheers

 Dave

 bcotton,
I guess I missed something. I thought you would be responding with a
URL,
but all I saw was the archives reference! If the pointer is buried
somewhere in the archives, is there any you can give us a hint exactly
where that needle is in the haystack?

 Tom

 Tom,

I haven't finished going through list mail to see if this has been
addressed
yet or not, but the searchable archive is at:

http://www.technoir.nu/libretto/list/

However I wasn't able to find anything when entering the term VCDROM or
the
terms "Virtual CD-ROM", or "virtual CD ROM". It must be there somewhere.

Batteries

Subject: Batteries

Hi All:

Just looked at this site: www.srsind.com/comp/home.cfm, where apparently new
(but maybe used, it's not real clear) batteries for L70s and L50s are selling
for $25 (PA2452UR), $30 (PA2497UR) and $50 (PA2498UR). None for my 100,
though :-(

I have never bought from this outfit, only passing along the info.

Interesting that the $30 (PA2497UR) is listed as a 50CT battery, and the $25
(PA2452UR) as a 70CT battery. I always thought the two Libs used the sma e
battery. Can anyone fill me in here?

cards on a plane - but not much more than an hour playing mp2s!

I have one of the origial 50CTs, and I never got more than an hour out of
the thing, even with the PC crtad modem out, and the original W95 installed!
