Months ago, someone on this list spoke of rebuilding his Libretto battery
pack with Li-ion batteries from a camera battery available at Radio Shack.
Anyone else remember this post as I am also interested in doing this now?
Anyone have the Radio Shack part number?

In short, NO. There is no individual Li-ION batteries for sale on the
market. You can only get the whole pack from Toshiba.

Jim,

It must be that hot Arizona sun getting to you...you're swapping left for
right...the wiring's curled up in the *right* hinge, and the left hinge does
all the work.

The left hinge is quite a complicated beast with springs and washers and
whathaveyous but the right hand one is mostly for location (and the wires)

It's true! Even if you get the $500+ part from somewhere (eg.
www.micsol.com) it's far more than the $300-500ish a L50 is going for on
Ebay.com

Sadly, it's never worth repairing a broken LCD on today's laptops -the costs
alone could buy another one.

Unfortunately, in the industry, we refer to this as "foobared".

I joined this list a long time ago when I bought a L70 and had the
screen go kaputz on my shortly after purchasing it. I searched high and
low, and could only find new screens for $500-$600, and found one
"refurbished screen" for $350. I had gotten lucky and spent $250 on the L70
in the first place and didn't like the idea of spending more just to fix
the screen, but however it may seem, the several hundred dollar cost of the
laptop is mostly in the screen. The rest of the laptop is just a molded
plastic case, circuit board(s), off the shelf controller chips, ram chips,
smt components, etc. If the laptop were sold new without a screen,
requiring an external monitor to be used, then the laptop would probably go
for like $200-$300 or so.
My roommate had this happen to his laptop a year ago. He cracked the
screen and insisted that a new screen could be found for a dirt cheap
price. For nearly a month he went to stores across the nation (he's a long
haul trucker) and every store told him that it'd be cheaper to just buy a
new laptop than fix the existing one. Finally, he came home with a brand
new laptop one day and just gave me the old one.
I got lucky with my 70 and found a guy on the list with a screen for
sale, I broke down and forked over a couple of hundred dollars, it was
cheaper than a new 70, not by a whole lot though. But I got my 70 back in
full operation and it has been very well ever since.

I would recommend looking for a used and or damaged libretto with a
good screen. I know that the screens of the 50's, 60's and 70's are
interchangeable, so if you find any of those you can take the screen out of
one of those. I don't know about the 20 and 30, the screens out of those
may or may not work.
If you find a screen and want some help replacing it yourself, I'll
be more than happy to help instruct.

The dealer's right. You can get a L100 used for less than a replacement

If you can find a non-functioning 50CT with an intact screen (on eBay or
elsewhere), you may be able to do the swap yourself.

You'd have to be very careful, of course. I don't have a copy of David
Chien's archive CD, but I'd bet there's good info in there to read before

Unfortuantely your dealer told you the truth this time. The only place to
get a replacement LCD screen is from Toshiba which is very expensive.

I haven't yet but I'm working toward it too.
libretto-config is a FreeBSD package that makes the APM work, I haven't tried sound
yet.
You can install libretto-config from ports if you have them. :)

I used PAO 3.5 RELEASE boot floppies to install and am trying to upgrade to 4.x-STABLE.
How did you get your 4.3 install on to the Lib?
Cheers

Screen smashed! Where do I go?

Subject: Screen smashed! Where do I go?

Hi all - new to the list.

My dog knocked over my Libretto 50CT and smashed the screen. When I brought
it to the dealer he said that it would be cheaper to just buy a new
Libretto. Of course, he was a dealer. Where is the least expensive place
to get this thing fixed. I am based in New York City.

Thanks in advance,

Christopher Buchenholz

Further to my request for Libretto parts - the PCMCIA holder is only sold as
parts of the system board which is a fortune - I do not nee the whole board
but if anyone has got just the screwed and plug on holder I would be
grateful. Also if anyone one has a dead 100CT I would be grateful.

Best wishes

George

Case replies

Thanks to all that answered my posting regarding case recommendations for
the 50, am still looking for the perfect selection but thanks to the many
responses am better armed in my research. Finally got a look at the Toshiba
case thru pictures on a UK link, seems to be sort of interesting, as well as
purpose built if you will. Has anyone experience with one of these, pro/con?
Thanks again, and was interested in hearing from Dan down under about his
design and seeing the pictures which he spoke of. Thanks again all. Douglas

Hinges

From: "Douglas" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Hinges

Hello all was just wondering about the right hand hinge on my newly acquired
50, it seems looser than the left hand one. Is this normal and required in
order to open the display, or is the right hand hinge worn as a result of
being on the side most used due to the mouse buttons location. TIA. Douglas
