Write-through caches ensure that on each write to the cache, there is a corresponding write to the main memory. Therefore, whatever is in main memory is what the processor thinks is there. Write-back caches only write the data from the cache to the memory when the space in the cache is required for something else. Statistically, it appears that reads are much more likely than writes, and that read-modify-write is more likely than write once and that's it. The snag with the first system is that there is a slow write cycle on *every* write, though the data is still in the cache if it is required again in the near future. With the second system, the write only occurs after a read instruction needs its space and it has to be cleared down. This suggests that depending on program source, the write-back is generally a quicker option. I shall have to try it. There's always the possibility that the hibernation code doesn't see the exact code in memory that should be there...but I can't believe that they would have implemented it to save without flushing the cache first. This is a posting from a desperate man Some of you here might recall I recently formatted and reinstalled Windows on my Libretto 100... as far as I know I installed Win95 back without problems. The reason I was forced to do this was the MS outlook 2000 program that I installed previously was reporting illegal operations on some functions and did not synchronise my contacts on my HP Jornada properly... Could not work out which unknown module the invalid transaction was occurring in so a re-format ensued. On install of Outlook to the Libretto this time all worked fine... then for no apparent reason after a few weeks the old problems returned. The problem is even exhibited in safe mode and with McAfee AV disabled. I decided to get the plastic out and register the problem with Microsoft Assisted Support (£45 + VAT!!) and they colnclude they do not understand why the program is doing this. They suggested I refomat and reinstall windows again as a final suggestion. I ony have minimal software on my Libretto - when I first installed McAfee VirusScan Outlook was working, when I installed ZoneAlarm (firewall) - it was also working. The ONLY modification I recall doing before the problem showed itself again was install a fax program - but as I stated - the problem exists in safe mode and besides I have subsequently uninstalled the PhoneTools program and makes no change. If anyone has any suggestions as to where I should look on my system for potential source of problem - please advise... Hi, I cannot help you solve the problem you are having, but in the case you are trying a reinstall I suggest you use something like ghost or drive image to store a exact copy of the windows partition on another partition (assuming you can boot from floppy and you partitioned the drive). So you can repeat the basic installation and make clones when you have verified that everything works ok. All in the hope that you can catch the bad piece of software (it does look like that) and move back a step in a matter of a few minutes... Also...why not run win98 (se)? Haven't used Win2K myself for longer than the first day (when it happily crashed all by itself! so much for stable), but here's the trick that usually works. 1) Same Workgroup, different Computer Names. 2) IPX/SPX installed on both (MS oopsy article says Win9X sometimes just can't go w/o it, even if you've already got TCP/IP installed). 3) Double-check you're using a Laplink/DCC compatible cable, not a regular printer cable. 4) Make sure both sides have the parallel port set in BIOS to at least Bi-Directional, if not ECC or ECP. You may have to cycle through them on both sides to match to find the one that works (some PCs will work on Bi-Dir, but not on ECP or EPP for strange reasons). 5) Make sure File Sharing is on on both sides in Network Control Panel. 6) Create a folder on both sides and share them. It's gonna be a long search and lots of trial and error if nobody else has experienced the exact same thing. other than that, I'd install: 1) OS, drivers, latest IE then all Win95 updates and patches. 2) Install Outlook, then SR2 Office updates. 3) Install the other apps. Run that for a couple weeks and see (all w/o synching w/ the Jornada). If it kills itself again, then install only 1 2. If you still have your 8G factory HD, a compatible CD Rom Drive, and the Tosh W98 CD Rom, I think you can do the same on your L100.
