[LIB] Flash & PC Card Storage on sale

Some ideas for portable storage devices for the Libretto, cheap:
$99, 2GB Toshiba PC Card HD:
Tiger Direct
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?sku=T24-1100%20P

$49, 260MB PC Card HD:
http://www.shop.kingston.com/closeout/

-

Some ideas for flash HD replacements for the Libretto (shock proof, lower
battery consumption):
SimpleTech 2.5" HD replacements:
http://www.simpletech.com/upgrade_navigator/?ProfileID=330&upnav=upgrade_navigator_action.php&productListing=true&ProductCategory=IDE%2BFlash%2BDrive%2B2.5

tech specs:
http://www.simpletech.com/navigator/oem/oem_list.php?category1=Flash&category2=Flash+Drive&category3=IDE+Flash+Drive+2.5

Basically, ~$400-600 for a ~500MB model; $1500 for a 2GB model (jump from part
#s above to buy.com pricing).

It would be very intesting to see what performance and battery life would be
after replacing the regular Libretto HD with one of these babies, but prices
are a bit steep for now. (Too bad we're still not in the DOS days - the
cheaper <500MB models would have worked perfectly!)

Don't resist, I got one of the Travelstars a month ago and couldn't be more
pleased with it! There are IBM hd's available for it up to (I think) 80g's.

Let me add to the above list the HP m820e cardbus CD-RW. I got one of these and
it's a wonderful little unit as well! Works with Nero too!

I didn't resist. ;-) I just ordered one - it may take a million years
to get here (in France), OK up to 6 weeks, but I have been looking for
one of these PCMCIA interfaces to use with my collection of 2.5" drives
and my L100 for almost a year now on and off. Cheers guys! :-)

I hope I understand correctly- this is an interface AND a 8.1GB HDD
together, right?

Yes. It's a PCMCIA to IDE interface that goes to a plastic box
containing a 2.5" 8.1GB HDD. The HD can be replaced by any other 2.5"
drive, I guess. I actually didn't need the HDD, but I saw a similar
interface alone for $80 about 9 months ago - they were out of stock.

Correct. It is a PCMCIA card, case, and 8.1Gig HD.

Not a bad price, but I already have my old 20G in a PCMCIA case setup.

Also, they're popping up on the www.morgan-auctions.co.uk most days (till
the manager runs out!) and they seem to top out at about 55-60 quids. These
are the same items, I think it amuses the manager :) I acquired the Portege
that way at 120quid+vat cheaper than the front page price.

Ah yes... I recall you're saying this now. What memory I have! Still
haven't found someone using the m820e on a L70... and haven't had the
opportunity yet to take my m820e apart and lube it up as per David's

The flash IDE HDD, yes

Anything (other than the OEM FDD) in the PCMCIA/PCcard slot, no

I know the legwork has been done to make it possible to boot Linux via first
the OEM FDD and then from there from an Iomega 40MB mini-zip-thing (sorry...
completely forgotten the correct name!) in the PCMCIA/PCcard slot - but
never tried it myself...
