Sound under DOS

2001-02-14 Thread Harrison, Richard

Subject: Sound under DOS

I'm in the midst of trying to turn my Libretto 50CT into a MP3 jukebox.
While doing this, I've been experimenting with different players. Even the
most basic players, like Winamp AMP2000 burp and skip and shutter if
ANYTHING else is being done. I've even gone so far as to load Winamp
instead of Explorer as the windows shell. I still get shutters every time I
touch the mouse.

So, I'm moving on to DOS MP3 players. I've downloaded a few to look at, but
I'm having a basic problem. Where can I find DOS drivers for the Yamaha
OLP3 sound card on the Libby?

If anyone is interested, I'll report back my trials final config.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Michael,

Where did you find a serial to USB adapter. It might be just the ticket for
those of us with Lib 50 70!!!

On a recent trip to japan, I was looking for such a beast, and they all
require cardbus support, which we don't have. Those look like normal type 2
cards, but have a brass or copper strip along the top edge of the
connector,
4 or 5 mm wide, with little bumps on it. They are not supported. I did find
a serial port to usb adapter, that is just a little dongle, driven by a
software driver. It might work thru the docking station, I don't know. I
bought it for another application. Mike Hodish

MP3 vs WMA

2001-01-05 Thread Harrison, Richard

Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 09:18:27 -0500
From: "Harrison, Richard" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: MP3 vs WMA

I've noticed quite a few discussions about using Librettos as MP3 players.
So, I'd like to ask somewhat off topic questions (only somewhat, I think,
because of the resource limits of the Libretto).

I've just read that Microsoft's WMA format offers almost a doubling of the
compression ratio compared to MP3's. So, CD quality audio can be achieved
at 64bit sampling levels. This results in files sized of half. Based on
this alone, I'd love to go through and convert my MP3 collect and
essentially double the size of my hard drive!

First question is, what is the down side of the format?

Second, the ripper I use will also "convert" mp3's to WMA. What bit rate
would I have to have in the source MP3 to end up with a good 64 bit WMA.

Once again, I apologize about the "somewhat" off topic post.

Richard

other OS's

2000-10-13 Thread Harrison, Richard

Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 09:45:01 -0500
From: "Harrison, Richard" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: other OS's

Here is what might be an odd question.

I've just had a Libretto 50 dropped in my lap because its previous owner
found it too slow. While I agree that 75Mhz and 16 Mb of RAM isn't state of
the art, I hate the idea of pitching such a cool tool.

My question is thus; what other OS's are out there that can run on this
limited muscle (Win98 WinNT WinCE RedHat BEOS)?

Next, I'm curious about people's experience with specific MS OS's. I want
to be practical about this and want to use this to supplement my office
computer. I doubt that I will be able to convince my employer to change all
of our computers to Linux!

First, will WinCe run on the libretto? I'm drawn to the promise of instant
on, and longer battery life. I also figure that since it is designed to run
with "smaller" processors, that it would be a good candidate. I know that I
would be limited to the packages that come with CE, but these are the ones
that work with my office system (ie Word, Excel, etc).

Second, because I want to be able to use MS Office compatible software,
which of the remaining MS OS's would give me the best performance?

Thanks up front for any advise.

I look forward to keeping my new found computer working for years!
