Looks smaller than the L50/L70, with a 5.8 screen. No real info as to schedule, ports (apart from USB2) etc. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/103340_vulcan09.shtml cheers, Simon ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ - Archives ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. [LIB] Re:libretto 1100 fan
Date: Sat, 13 Jul 2002 13:35:43 +1200 From: Simon Shuker [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re:libretto 1100 fan Hi Neil, Thanks for that - had a look at Jonathon's fan utility (and installed win2000), but I've put the original Japanese OS back on, and come to the conclusion that it's not the software, but the hardware - basically the libretto is obviously either running very hot all the time, or it's reporting that it's running very hot all the time - regardless of OS (DOS, jap win98, win98 lite, win2000 etc). The fan comes on after a few seconds even in DOS, and when doing activities that would normally cause the fan to activate (large file transfers, ghosting etc), the libretto shuts down instead. There's a possibility of a warranty on this one, so I'm reluctant to pull it apart just yet, but does anyone know where the libretto would be getting it's temperature information from? - maybe the appropriate thermistor has slipped/broken? (The fan utility would turn the fan off for half a second, but would then be over-ridden by the BIOS and the fan would turn back on). Any help would be appreciated, because I don't really want to have to send this back to Japan, (having 128M of memory and a better screen is quite nice) but it's not much good to me at the moment. cheers, Simon Date: Tue, 9 Jul 2002 12:47:03 +1200 From: Simon Shuker [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re:libretto 1100 fan Hi all, Have tried a few things, but still no luck with getting the fan on my new 1100 to shut off while in Windows. I redid the ghost install, L Dunno about the ACPI and whatever - but I have a feeling that Jonathon L Buzzard has a utility for windows which controls the fan, among other L things. IIRC, shareware for about a quid. L Neil L _ L Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. Date: Tue, 9 Jul 2002 12:47:03 +1200 From: Simon Shuker [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re:libretto 1100 fan Hi all, Have tried a few things, but still no luck with getting the fan on my new 1100 to shut off while in Windows. I redid the ghost install, then did a clean win98 lite install, followed by a clean vanilla win98 install. I even navigated through Toshiba's Japanese site and got the latest 1100 bios (8.0) which also made no difference. I have tried both the toshiba utilities that came with the 1100, and various others, yet despite whatever settings I make, as soon as 98 boots (just before the GUI comes up), on goes the internal fan - and stays on, even after choosing the shutdown, reboot in DOS mode option. As expected though, it doesn't start just booting straight into a command prompt. It's not just the annoying noise - it'll be using up more power than it really needs to, and besides - my new toy is just not working right! I'm thinking of installing win2000, to see if that will help, but I don't really want to take the speed-hit, when there should be no problem with 98. I don't know - maybe the ACPI fan is receiving the instruction to turn on, but ignoring any instruction to turn off? (I suppose I could try booting into a command prompt and then heating and cooling the libretto to see what it does - but that's even further down my list of things I would like to do). Any ideas? thanks, Simon ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ - Archives ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. [LIB] libretto 1100 fan
Date: Thu, 4 Jul 2002 18:12:31 +1200 From: Simon Shuker [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: libretto 1100 fan Hi all, Seeing as no-one has brought out a better replacement yet, and I was starting to get nervous when my L1050's screen started shimmering a bit, I have bought a back-up - a second-hand L1100. It arrived on Tuesday, and I just got around to setting it up - something which proved pretty easy - I just created a ghosted back-up of the current Japanese config on the 1100 in case I wanted to access it later, and then replaced it with a ghosted copy of my 1050 (running win98se with 98lite making it more usable). After starting the 1100 up, it asked for the drivers for the couple of different peripherals (smart media, larger screen, modem and camera), and everything is running fine. The only problem is that the fan seems to be on almost all the time. I did see a new hardware dialog flash up for an ACPI fan, but as I didn't have the drivers on yet I just cancelled out of it, and it hasn't reappeared at start-up (or appear in the device manager). The Toshiba power configuration utility I use seems to give the fan as an option - on or auto (and the other options it gives all work - ie. Sound/modem/usb on, monitor brightness etc). I have also changed the cooling settings in the BIOS to Quiet rather than performance, but the fan still is on relatively frequently, even in a standard DOS session. Anyone have any ideas? cheers, Simon ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ - Archives ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. hard-drive availability/floor+libretto=bugger
Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 10:56:36 +1300 From: Simon Shuker [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: hard-drive availability/floor+libretto=bugger Hi Michael, Thanks for the Akihabara info, although I've checked the dates and my friend is flying out tomorrow, so I may have left it a bit late for her to get one. I think it might be mostly the hard-drive that is damaged (scandisk is now into about hour 18, and has been at around 13% for the last ten hours) so I was looking at getting a new one - unfortunately most of the suppliers (Weesco etc) aren't brilliantly set up for overseas orders (need International Money Order etc, don't accept credit cards). Anyway, I wanted to check on the height issue with you first - you have previously mentioned that the 20G drive works OK, so I assume you have put a 9.5mm drive into your 1100 (and I already know what a hassle it is to get at the drive in these things) - any height problems? I can't really remember how much leeway I had in the bracket when I put the 6.4G one in. thanks, Simon ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **

You're right - it's a good price, even as a back-up drive, but I don't think they ship outside America (I live in New Zealand - several kilometres outside most US cyberstores delivery zones). I'm checking with their sales guys though, and I'm entirely willing for them to surprise me. Simon -Original Message- From: Paul D. J. floor+libretto=bugger
Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 16:17:04 +1300 From: Simon Shuker [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: floor+libretto=bugger Well, obviously a few years of reading about the disasters of others on this list has bred a false feeling of complacency - after three models and over three years of accident-free libretto ownership, I've gone and done it - about 20 minutes ago the powercord of my charging 1050 got caught on the side of my chair as I pushed it aside, resulting in an approximately three-foot fall onto a carpet-covered concrete floor. It landed flat on its back (bouncing out the keyboard-retaining piece of plastic) and the screen now has vertical red, green and blue stripes covering it. I restarted, and when it wouldn't boot past the initial virus-check, re-booted and am currently running scan disk. Yes - there are at least some bad clusters (and still only 10% through the scan). Anyway - apart from the relatively important data which I have of course not backed up recently enough, there is the small matter of the injured computer. I suspect that it may just be a jarred display connection (hopefully)- as the actual panel is still intact. I do have a friend popping over to New Zealand from Japan for Christmas though, so was wondering if anyone knew if any Librettos were still commercially available - she lives an hour out of Sapporo, but will probably be coming out through Tokyo, so it's probably a good time at the moment to try and get a replacement...? Any suggestions? Update: floor+libretto=bugger
Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 18:20:08 +1300 From: Simon Shuker [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Update: floor+libretto=bugger Well, things are looking slightly up - I remembered that the screen connector was connected rather precariously under the keyboard (gave myself a slight heart murmur when I forgot to connect it correctly after totally disassembling and reassembling the computer on a previous occassion, meaning that the power button did nothing), so ensured that was plugged fully in, which has fixed the screen problem. Still doing scandisk (damn that 6G partition) but things are looking better . . . Japanese Drivers
Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 16:02:05 +1300 From: "Simon Shuker" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Japanese Drivers I've asked this before, and suspect it isn't a simple request, but I'm trying to find the latest drivers for the 1050/1100, and am not having much luck with the Japanese Toshiba site, which would be the one that would carry them. This hasn't been aided by the fact that I can read virtually no Japanese. I think I might have to join their PC Members Club, but although this should be technically possible (I bought my libretto brand new in Japan and have all relevant docs) I suspect in practice it is going to be a lot more difficult. If anyone knows where the drivers are and could give me a link to them, or have any other handy suggestions it would be most appreciated.
