 Hi

Does anyone know of a windows or dos utility that will uncompress a
 Unix tar.gz file?

You will probably have to do it in to steps. A gzip.exe to uncompress
it and a tar.exe to extract from it.

I am pretty sure that gzip will compile from the sources with
no problems on windows, it maybe even available already compiled.

There is an MS-DOS(!!) tar.exe at: ftp://ftp.taygeta.com/pub/DOS_Extras/tar.ex
e

its pretty ancient, the file timestamp on my server is Aug 1996, but it will
probably
get the job done.

 /sbin/modprobe opl3sa2 io=0x370 mss_io=0x530 mpu_io=0x330 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0

(the other modules: soundcore, sound, ad1848 are automatically loaded with no

It works okay, but its pretty quiet without headphones or powered speakers.

yes.. reason i ask is cause like i said my dlink or ipaq cards never
 worked..

I had a cheap 802.11 CF card (for the IPaQ) and it only worked
with encryption turned off -- I returned it.

I now use LinkSys wireless cards for all my systems (IPaQ, the Sharp Zaurus)
and my Linux Lib 100. They might not be the cheapest cards available but they
all work
reliably with zero hassles.

BTW if you DO use this technology, turn on encryption and use the full 104

I set up a test wireless network with 40 bit encryption turned on and my Lib

was able to crack it by brute force in 14 seconds!

that it has to be a
16 Bit not 32. I want to down load pictures from my camera but it takes an
age by the serial port.

If you can't find such a USB card, you might want to consider a PCMCIA adapter
for the media
(SD, SmartMedia, Compact Flash) for you camera. The media is formatted by
default as VFAT, so
it can be treated logically like a disk drive once the card is inserted into
your PC.

If you are going to use a 2.4 kernel, make sure to get a 2.4.x modutils
and a recent pcmcia-cs. They layout of /lib/modules/... has changed from 2.2
and you will need the new utils to support it.

The code you will need is available at ftp://ftp.taygeta.com/pub/Linux

At the moment I'm thinking of swapping the Linux swap partition (which is
primary partition 3, sitting just before the start of the extended partition)
with the NT partition. How would I go about telling linux that its swap
partition has changed from /dev/hda3 to /dev/hda5?

change the 'swap' entry in /etc/fstab

If you want to do it while 'live', use 'swapoff /dev/hda3' then
'swapon /dev/hda5'

Is this really a good idea and/or will it really make any difference?

It won't matter to Linux where it is.

OK I've been stuffing around and, at a variety of times got a single low beep, a
high beep followed by a low beep
and 2 high beeps. None of them gave me access to the network or link lights however
... I've tried recompiling the
PCMCIA module without luck (in fact it went and got rid of my pcmcia.conf which
sorta annoyed me a bit).

It should have saved the old one at /etc/pcmcia/config.0

You might get a more reliable two-high-beeps if you set
PCIC_OPTS=poll_interval=100  in /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia

How would I go about reinstalling PCMCIA support from scratch? I can't find any
mention of pcmcia when I do 'make
menuconfig' within the linux source ...

See 'General setup'. You will want hot-pluggable support as well as
PCMCIA

 Feb 11 12:34:44 talitha cardmgr[490]: executing: './network start eth0'

I get all those lines bar './network start eth0' ... when I execute that myself it
gets stuck at 'getting IP' or
something like that ... but I still get no link light ...

This sounds like /etc/pcmcia/network.opts needs to be set properly.

the NEXT question is how the heck do I get floppy support going? I've extracted the
floppy patch to
 /usr/src/linux/pcmcia-cs-3.1.8 and executed 'cat
pcmcia-cs-3.1.8/modules/patches/floppy22.E.fix | patch -p0' but I
can't figure out how to enable PCMCIA support as a module ... I can't find any
mention of it in 'make menuconfig'.

If the patch worked, you should see it under:

Block Devices --Support Removable floppy interfaces (PCMCIA)

Subject: Re: [LIB] Red Hat Linux on the L50

Thanks ... the thing is, I don't even think its getting that far. I get no link
lights on the card for
instance - it seems to be that the card is identified but Linux can't figure out
what to do with it.

If this is true, then you should get a high beep and then a low beep.

I haven't got system beeps turned on but I'm willing to bet that its either only
giving me the single
identify beep or the low failed beep (as opposed to the double identify/activate
beep).

For getting going anyway, you might want to have them on.

nor can I figure out how to stop and start the cards

/etc/rc.d/initd./pcmcia stop ( or start, or restart as appropriate )

After bootup, a this should only be necessary if you have changed stuff
inside /etc/pcmcia/

Ya but don't you have to stop individual cards before you pull them like you do
under Windows? AFAIK PCMCIA
STOP stops card services altogether - something that you won't want to do if say you
want to pull the FDD
whilst you've also got the NIC as you'll end up killing your network connection.

If you want to stop an individual card, you can use the command:

  cardctl suspend
or
  cardctl eject

but its not usually necessary. You can just manually eject the card
and the card services software
will do all the necessary shutdown procedures for that card (so its
NOT like Windows). (In your
example, just be sure to unmount the floppy -- e.g. umount /mnt/floppy
-- before you pull the card.
Card services won't care, but your files on the floppy will!).

A good idea, but the stock kernel supports pretty much any network card,
if the kernel is confused about what module to load you can put a line in
/etc/modules.conf to be explicit about which one to load:

 alias eth0 ne2

How would you ID it as ne2? Here's what I get when I run 'cardctl ident':

 Socket 0:
product info: PCMCIA, 10/100 Ethernet Card, ,
   manfid: 0x0274, 0x1106
   function: 6 (network)

The system logs will probably be more informative. This is what is in
/var/log/messages
on my Lib100 after inserting a Linksys network card:

Feb 11 12:34:43 talitha cardmgr[490]: socket 0: Linksys EtherFast 10/100 Fast
Ethernet
Feb 11 12:34:43 talitha kernel: cs: memory probe 0x0d-0x0d: clean.
Feb 11 12:34:44 talitha kernel: eth0: NE2000 (DL10019 rev 05): io 0x300, irq
3, hw_addr 00:E0:98:77:FE:8D
Feb 11 12:34:43 talitha cardmgr[490]: executing: 'modprobe 8390'
Feb 11 12:34:44 talitha cardmgr[490]: executing: 'modprobe pcnet_cs'
Feb 11 12:34:44 talitha cardmgr[490]: executing: './network start eth0'

You probably have a something like the first line, it indicates that the
card services saw the card.

The second line depends upon your card opts and might not even exist for you

The third line is the key, it indicates that the cs knows what to do with
the card. If you don't have
a line like that then you probably need to edit /etc/pcmcia/config so that
your card is recognized.
The HOWTO gives details. (My copy of /etc/pcmcia/config has a commented out

I found PCMCIA to work best when compiled for your kernel. Its a pretty
straightforward process, I've never had any problems with it. Also
the HOWTO for PCMCIA is full of useful hints on dealing with the types of
problems that can come up. What is going wrong with your setup ?

I have an empower version bought in the UK but it came in US packaging. It's
15v only - with a soap-on-a-rope adaptor in line - and has a car power
adaptor, and then an adaptor from *that* to the in-flight connector. Oddly,
the car adaptor is just too small for my car (Fiat) power point, so I have
to wedge it a bit :) Sometimes the pretty green light goes out, but it still
 seems to work.

It throws out RF but not enough to obscure - and as I tend to use it to
listen to MP3 on the move, it doesn't matter. I dunno if it works on planes,
I never get to sit in the expensive seats with power :)

btw - it's probably not stable on 1.5A power supply because the effective
output impedance is too high...1.5/12v equates to 1.2/15v and that's not
really enough to run the lib...plus switch modes don't like (usually) to run
without a load, it upsets their regulation.

I made an adaptor for my 100CT by cutting off the Lib power connector
from a frayed Toshiba AC power adaptor ( PA2501U ), and soldering it to
a car DC power connector from Radio Shack (which also came with a little
ring for use on car power plugs that are larger than standard).

I used it two weeks ago on an 11 hour flight to Japan. I obviously didn't
have the equipment to measure the current, but the 12V plug on the AA
777 (which did not need the in-flight connector BTW) kept my 100 fully
  charged the entire flight.

See my earlier reply - you need 32M if you have any chance of M8.1 working
well, it's a memory hog, particularly with kde2.2. It will still be slow - I
did the timings as a comparison some weeks ago but I don't have them with
me, but iirc around thre and a half minutes from power to kde desktop under
M8.1. I'd recommend the upgrade anyway.

You might be happier using a minimalist window manager, such as Blackbox,
(http://blackbox.alug.org/) They require much less memory and don't take
up valuable screen real-estate with a lot of clutter.

I sent a message while back but no one has been giving me an insight, yet.
So, I would like to try again.
My two batteries (PA2503U) were damaged and need to be replaced pretty soon.
Do you have any idea where I can purchase either Toshiba's or any
 compatible?
Any input will be greatly appreciated...

I had to replace mine a few months ago. I purchased one from the
Toshiba-USA web site and received it about 4 days later.

How about looking for a replacement Li-ION battery pack for some other
battery powered unit that uses the same size and chopping it open?

Has anyone opened up Lib 100 battery? Mine is on its way out and if I can
get into it without damaging the casing too much...
I assume that its just clips holding it together, but which are the best
places to put a knife / screwdriver to wedge it open with?

After my Lib 100 battery recently died, I opened the case up by using a
1/4" wide screw driver. Pry it a little at a time along the seam.
There is some double sided tape between the batteries and the case, so it
makes some horrible breaking sounds as you pry it open, but when I did it
anyway the whole unit was undamaged when I was done and it still snaps
backtogether
   just fine.

Inside were 6 Lithium-ion batteries that are slightly larger in diameter
than a AA,
   and about 1/2" longer.

I ordered a replacement battery directly from Toshiba-USA and received it
in less
   than a week.

Secondly a problem with the screen size and Linux, the desktop is fine and
defaults to 640 x 480 however when opening the config manager in either
gnome or KDE the screen is greater than the visable area, the window can be
moved around however not sufficently to see lower portion of the window
(the bit with the buttons on) I can find no way of resizing that particular
 screen window?

You should be able to set the virtual screen size to 800x640 and use
whatever smaller size for the physical screen.

You might want to try using the Blackbox window manager. It does not eat
up so much screen real-estate. I use it on my Lib whenever I am running
   off the LCD screen.
