Download a copy of Winimage, it's a small program that can open .ISO files
and allow you to extract all/any file that you wish.
It also will open and write to floppy .IMG files, which are the bootfloppy
images.

This was how I installed Debian on my Libretto, extract all the files from
the cd's into one partition, boot the windows partition in to DOS, and then
run the HD install script, hey presto, the worlds smallest unix workstation !

Well, you sure wondered loud enough. 8-)

As root:

# mount -o loop whatever.iso /mnt/disk

(You should not have to specify the mount type. If you do, odds are
your ISO is corrupted.)

H... so are the 4 different types of images you were talking about
putting onto 1.44MB FDs ISO images that have been written to the FDs via
some piece of software? If so, what writes them to the FDs?

Aha! So there IS a way to extract the files from the ISO image file right
to a HDD. I was thinking I could use CD-RW software to write the ISO to a
CD, and then copy the files to the HDD. I'll refrain from wondering too
loudly what the process of "mount it as a loopback device' is. (Man... I
remind myself of those two brothers who would come to my skateboard shop
every day, and bug me by asking questions faster than I could answer them!)

Still, the $5 IDE adaptor method sounds the most livable

An ISO image is a single file which contains *all* the data on the CD,
including the directory structures and TOC and whathaveyou. When you copy an
ISO, it's copied bit-for-bit instead of treating it as a file, so when the
CD is read, all the file structures appear as normal.

Booting from the installation CD is easiest - it's how they expect you to do
it so everything is set up that way. Stuffing the CD onto a dos partition
and running with a floppy is quickest because the HD is the fastest data
store on the system.

If you really want to get exotic, you can download an ISO image, mount it as
a loopback device, which lets you see the contents, copy the contents to the
HD, and run an installation from there. Never need to see a CD :)

Now I forget whether or not an ISO image is one big file or not. It is
isn't it? And CD burning software extracts the componets and burns them to
a CD... right?

Wonder what that may be.

Don't know about other distributions, but I installed RedHat 7.1 onto a
Lib 70 from CD, starting from a Windows DOS prompt. Don't recollect the
details offhand - but I think one can just run a batch file from the
dosutils folder of the CD. Perhaps Mandrake has such a folder also?
