100CT PCMCIA Problem
Date: Sat, 7 Apr 2001 14:44:18 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: 100CT PCMCIA Problem Hello, My 100CT w/W95 OSR2 has been a project in re-configuration after installing a new hard drive. Most everything is (finally) working pretty well, except for the PCMCIA settings. Changing from "PCIC Compatible" to "Auto-Detect" in HW Setup, then rebooting, brings up an error message which says that Card Services are not available and the PCMCIA interface is not functional. Clicking OK to that window generates a blue screen error which warns of system instability. Once the HW setup is switched back to PCIC-Compatible, everything's okey-dokey again. Tosh support (for the 100CT, W95B) shows a MACHINE.INF for IRQ steering and PCMCIA.INF version 1.1. Is this what I need? Have any of you run into this before? Thanks for any feedback. At home I use an older wireless card which crashes the machine if Card-Bus/16 or auto-selected is used, and at work I use a Card-Bus card which doesn't work in auto or PCIC mode. I am grateful the Toshibas still offer PCIC because many modern laptops only allow Card-Bus which is definitely NOT fully backwards compatible. Bottom line, I "manually" switch and reboot the type of PCMCIA driver and it works. Pres Waterman W2PW c/o Patchogue Motors, Inc. Is there a FAQ anywhere that discusses this ? I've been playing with the BIOS settings from PCIC Comp and Autodetect but this does not make any difference. In the device manager, under PCMCIA socket it has two entries which are both "Toshiba ToPIC 97 CardBus Controller" I am told that I should also have another entry which is PCMCIA Services . When I enter a card their is no description in the Socket Status Description eg "- Socket 1" and the card does not work What do other people have ? and How do you install the card services ? HELP Cheers Paul. ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **

Using one of these Troubleshooters is an easy way for non-technical users to find and fix hardware problems. You're led step by step through a series of questions designed to track down the solution to your specific problem. All you have to do is answer the interactive questions in the Troubleshooter, and you'll be led to the probable solution to your problem. The following Troubleshooters come with Windows 98: Dial-Up Networking Direct Cable Connection DirectX Display DriveSpace Hardware Conflict Memory Modem MS-DOS Programs Networking PC Card Print Sound Startup and Shutdown The Microsoft Network To track down a particular problem with a Troubleshooter: 1.Click the Start button and select Help. 2.When the Help window appears, click the Contents tab click Troubleshooting, and then click Windows 98 Troubleshooters. 3.Select the Troubleshooter for your specific problem in the left pane. The Troubleshooter itself will be displayed in the right pane. 4.Follow the interactive directions to troubleshoot your particular hardware problems. Fixing Big Problems with System Troubleshooter If your problems are so big that the standard Windows Troubleshooters can't find solve them, you need to turn to a more powerful tool. Included with Windows 98 is just such a tool: System Troubleshooter. System Troubleshooter is a tool that uses the same steps used by Microsoft Technical Support staff when they're trying to diagnose system configuration problems. You work through a series of steps that, one-by-one, disable various system components until you track down the one that's causing your specific problem. Use System Troubleshooter when you have major problems with your system, particularly problems that appear after you've installed a new piece of hardware. Caution Because System Troubleshooter modifies key system files, it should be used only by technically savvy users. To use System Troubleshooter: 1.Launch System Troubleshooter by clicking the Start button and selecting Run. When the Run dialog box appears, type tshoot in the Open box, and then click OK. 2.Before you begin diagnosing problems, create a backup of all your system files by selecting the General tab and clicking the Create Backup button. _ Hope this helps! Hi Karen, Thanks for your prompt reply, I did try and use the trouble shooter this morning (before I sent my initial mail). For PCMCIA problems it was not that much cop. In the help, there was a was an option to "enable 32-bit card support" (using the PC Card (PCMCIA) wizard. I selected this option and it said it was not installed and that I should goto to Add/REmove Programs for the Windows setup. There is NO entry in the windows setup to configure PCMCIA Cards or the Card services. So thats a bit of a dead end. > Fixing Big Problems with System Troubleshooter > 1.Launch System Troubleshooter by clicking the Start button >and selecting Run. When the Run dialog box appears, type > tshoot in the Open box, and then click OK. Tried this, there is no tshoot applicaiton on my machine :-( There is NO entry on PCMCIA Socket wihin the Device Manager for "PCMCIA Card Services". **The question is "How do I the above PCMCIA Card Services ?"* Other useful information that may help is that when I add or remove a PCMCIA card, the following message box appears: "Windows is not able to identify or use the inserted PC Card device because there is no memory area available to communicate with the device. You must make a memory area available before this device can be used.Check your computer's CONFIG.SYS file for a memory manager that is excluding upper memory regions between A000 and ." I don't have any entries in my config.sys that reference any memory settings :-( Thanks for your help so far Cheers Paul ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **

Do you get that on your list too??? If you do, then you select it and go from there... BTW, I always do a custom install of any Windoz product... gives more control over the end result that way. It brings up screens not seen otherwise, like selecting other hardware that is not detected by Windoz. Hi Karen OK (I may be a bit slow here ) I have added a new PCMCIA Socket - which is of the type [Standard PCMCIA driver} and from the list selected the ojnely one that was there which is PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller. Is this the right driver ? OK Thats promising, so the PCMCIA Card Services entry is a bit of a bum steer then ? as you have the same entries as I do ! > If that is what you have also, try putting your various > cards in and installing them and see if they work :-) OK did that with a Toshiba PCMCIA Modem. I added it manually using the "Add New Hardware", it says the hardware Modem is present and functioning OK !!! BUT it does NOT work saying that Error 630 - the modem is not responding. PLease verify that the modem is plugged in to the computer and to the telephone line When I enter any card a message box appears with the heading PC Card Troubleshooting Agent. "Windows is not able to identify or use the inserted PC Card device because there is no memory area available to communicate with the device. I added it manually using the "Add >New Hardware", it says the hardware Modem is present and functioning OK !!! Put your modem in a slot and hook it up to the phone line... In the Control Panel, open the System icon and go to Device Manager tab and see if there is a yellow exclamation point or red X showing on top of your modem driver... double click on the name of your modem to bring up the properties window... make sure the modem is NOT disabled on the General tab... if it is, unclick it and click OK and see what happens... if you get a message or something... and what the message if any says. If there is a yellow exclamation point, inside the properties window, you'll need to check the Resources tab and see what it says in there... Also, close down the properties window for the modem and double click on the "Computer" at the top of the list in the Device Mgr window... check all your IRQ's to see which one your modem is using... you can also check the I/O.. and the memory in that same window... There should be a Modem icon in the Control Panel... open that and see what is there for your Modem... click on the Diagnostics tab... see what Com port it has your modem on... if it is there, click on the Com port once to hilite it and click on the button below named "More info..." Tell me what happens...
