This sounds better than a full bar of music: we don't want to make a
music piece so prominently, which could in particular distract the
reader, but we want to show the site is about music ntoation software
that focuses on typographic quality.

However, the glyphs you added are *a bit* too large...

Best,
John

I've added it, but I'm not sure if this works

We already have the

I had a go with this, please revert if you like John's real music better

Re: Main page of new website [was: some css tweaks]

2009-07-30 Thread Maximilian Albert
Hi all,

sorry, this is only going to be a quick reply and I'll be away on the
leave for a few days (or perhaps even up to 1-2 weeks), so a more
elaborate reply will have to wait until I'm back. I started writing up
a longer email, but I realized that what I said was so imprecise
(because it's more related to some vague feelings I'm having rather
than to specific issues I could put my finger on) that I decided to
think about it a bit more thoroughly and get back to you when I have
more specific suggestions. My apologies for the noise so far.

What about showing ... music notation for everyone in a larger font
 size,

That would definitely be a big improvement, and one which is most easy
to achieve. I'd vote for it.

BTW, I just noticed that there is now a second subtitle on
http://lilypond.org/~janneke/lilypond.org/ which reads free music
notation software. IMHO this destroys the slogan-ness of the title to
some extent and makes it more clumsy to read because of the additional
line. Why not simply increase the font size of ... music notation for
everyone?

[...] and adding a small cropped excerpt of Lily-generated picture of
music at the right of LilyPond title?

That might be a good thing, too, although on second thought I tend to
agree with Graham's concerns about having two pictures next to the
title. Also, I fear that simply pasting some LilyPond output might
make the page appear less well-integrated. Although on second thought
I may be wrong. Perhaps it's worth a try.

 You proposed something similar
later in your talkative email, did you have in mind something like the
 attached pitcure?

Sorry for having been talkative, I could/should have condensed my
thoughts properly before sending this. But it was late, I had had a
long day and was tired so I hope you didn't mind me just writing what
came to my mind. In any case, I sincerely hope I didn't step on
anyone's feet, and in the end it's not my opinion that counts anyway.
It was just something I felt and wanted to mention.

OK, more to follow when I'm back and have a better idea of what I
really want to talk about. :-)

All the best and thanks for everyone's hard work!
Max

Main page of new website [was: some css tweaks]

2009-07-29 Thread Maximilian Albert
Hi all,

Attached are some css tweaks, you can see them in
 action at

   http://lilypond.org/~janneke/lilypond.org

Following the link reminded me of a comment I already wanted to make a
while ago. While we are at changing the design of the website (which I
consider a very good thing), I'd strongly suggest that we take the
opportunity and make it more easily recognizable *at the first glance*
that LilyPond is a *music* notation software. I know that it says so
in the subtitle, that there is the explanation What is LilyPond
directly beneath it and that the image features some notes and staves
in the background. But frankly, even though I was actively looking for
it when opening the new page for the first time, it took me a while to
find the information what LilyPond actually does. The subtitle is
really small so that all you actually read is LilyPond (which
doesn't give a clue to uninitiated), the paragraph about LilyPond
beneath it almost vanishes among the News and the notes in the image
are only recognizable if you actively for look them.

Now imagine potential new users who more or less accidentally browse
to the website. I may be wrong, but from personal experience I'd say
that they decide within the first (few) second(s) if they close the
window again or if they want to take a closer look. And if the site
doesn't give them a good and decided incentive to stay, they will
leave, which I'd find a pity.

Don't get me wrong, I like the new design. But I think with a couple
of small tweaks it can be made into a real eye- (and new-user-)catcher
instead of just a nicely-looking but not overly captivating webpage.
Unfortunately, I'm not a graphic designer, so I can't make very good
suggestions apart from the points mentioned above. Maybe put a big
note next to the title? Perhaps even the image from the introduction,
which I think excellently conveys LilyPonds mixture of professionality
and aesthetics? BTW, now that I look at it again, I feel that the
picture of the lily does not totally get the message across how much
emphasis LilyPond puts on good and professional design and quality
(and how good it actually is). This was already the case with the old
image, and the new one is _a lot_ better, but to me it seems that
there is still a gap between the quality of the software and its
representation towards the world (via the website). Am I the only one?

Sorry, this was a long email for a very simple message. And again, I
apologize that my remarks are hardly constructive (maybe others have
better suggestions?) . But I'd really like to see a faszinating,
well-polished and attractive new site. I think LilyPond deserves it,
and this is the opportunity.

Cheers,
Max

I agree, but this is a CSS issue, not a content issue. Not my
problem. ;)

What about showing ... music notation for everyone in a larger font
size, and adding a small cropped excerpt of Lily-generated picture of
music at the right of LilyPond title?

That's possible, although I'm not certain about having pictures on
both sides of the big title. What about removing the big lilypad
picture? We already have the icon in the top-left corner, and
hopefully as the favicon image.

What about putting the What is lilypond as a sidebar along the
right side (above the Quick links)? We might also want to
re-name Quick links to Current versions ?

Alternatively, the background could be made more prominent...
actually, that would suck for all the other pages. Maybe just add
more images of notation as the background of the what is
lilypond box?

Cheers,
- Graham
