2004-11-02 Thread Jean-marc LEGRAND

Hi list !

I'm typesetting a piece from Tobias Humes' Musical Humors for the viol. Some pieces
are tuned as
the Bandora, which means that the common way to tune a viol has to be changed. In the
classical way
, the special tuning is indicated before the first clef, as a chord of blacks
noteheads (without
notebar). How can I reproduce that in my score, please ?

A few lily 2.4 questions

2004-11-02 Thread Thomas Scharkowski
Hi all,

I am using 2.4.0 on Suse 9.1.

1)
In a 2.2.4 document I had: \paper {linewidth=18 \cm}
Convert-ly replaces \paper with \layout, but this way I get different
margins on left and right sides of the page.
I manually added a \page Block: \page {linewidth=18 \cm \leftmargin=1.5 \cm}
Shouldn't convert-ly do this for me?

2)
I have some Latex-commands in a lily document, so tried lilypond-latex.
But this does not work. I get an error message:

File /usr/local//bin//lilypond-latex, line 725, in ?
 os.chdir (tmpdir)
OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory:
'/tmp/tmp5GTB10/usr/local/bin/lilypond-latex'
Could anyone help me with this?

3)
In the old document I had
opus = \\normalfont \\small{transcribed by}
in the header block.
I replaced it with opus = \small {transcribed by}, but in the output this
line is shifted to the left. What is wrong here? Without \small it looks
ok.

4)
Any suggestions for:
\set Staff.instrument = \markup {\\textcircled{\\footnotesize \\textbf 3} =
fis}, which worked very good in 2.2.4?

Thank you,
Thomas

The default earlier was to use symmetric left and right margins,
I'm not sure how it works now.

Probably, the lilypond-latex script was never tested seriously
before the release, I can reproduce the bug here.

Use \markup{...} commands if you want to change the default layout
in the title.

I'm afraid this requires some hacking. It has been on the wish list for
several years.

In another words, its a tutorial for newbies?

Do you think we should have a simple song,
then show different examples using the different editors?

Is microsoft notepad a text editor also?
I do not mind taking a few screen shots or saying a few words on my windows platform.

Re: Error in new articulation _

2004-11-02 Thread Graham Percival
Please keep LilyPond emails on the mailing list; that way the answers
are archived
and everybody can search for them.

I must admit that I was wrong about the Britten suites, but it's
possible that somebody,
somewhere, wants the line closer to the notehead. We could probably
remove the
-_ articulation without any problems, but since it's there now we might
as well leave
it in there.

I don't think that changing the language simply in order to save a few
keystrokes
is a good idea -- especially since it doesn't clearly save keystrokes.
---. is very simple
to type; -_ requires the use of the shift key. :)

Note that ---. and -.-- simply tells LilyPond put a legato mark and a
staccato mark on this
note. LilyPond then puts the marks in the normal order, with the dot
closer to
the notehead. If we add - to the mix, LilyPond would place that in
the proper
place as well, regardless of the order of symbols.

Cheers,
- Graham

Thanks for your answer.
Since combinaison of dot and line whith line closer to the notehead
seems used, but less than the oposite, may I propose that the notation
-_ -.-- should be reversed ? ( -_ for the most common case (the
dot closer to the notehead), and -.-- for the line near the notehead).
It will save keystrokes for the most common case, isn't it ?

If you use -.-- then Lilypond will print the dot closer to the
notehead. -_ is supposed to be used when you want the line closer
to the notehead. I think I saw it in a Britten unaccompanied cello
suite; I'll double-check if you want.

font problems?

2004-11-02 Thread Victor S. Miller
I've installed LP 2.2.6 on RH 9. Things work fairly well, except for
the following which I would guess is some sort of font problem:

No brace is printed to the left of a piano staff (even from some of
the precanned examples). No dynamic markings, like p, pp, etc. are
printed. Any suggestions about tracking down the cause? No error
messages are given. I do get lots of warnings from xpdf when viewing
the pdfs, about bad bounding boxes.

PDF only

2004-11-02 Thread J L
Hi,
I was wondering if it is possible to only build a specific part of the
documentation (namely the User-Guide in PDF/PS).

Also, why do the Piece title in LilyPond output appear to the side?
Generally, I've seen some old editions where the name of the Piece is
printed centred and moderately large.
