Windows command prompt and lilypond 2.6 native windows

2005-07-18 Thread Art Hixson
Typing lilypond at the Windows command prompt produces no result.
Whereas, from the Cygwin console I get the default sample .ly file.

I can compile a .ly file from Cygwin but not from the Windows prompt. Why?

It seems the only way I can send a .ly file to the Windows install is by
dragging the file icon to the Lilypond icon on the desktop. That's
really painfully awkward!

I really like jEdit, because it's cultivated for Lilypond and Python,
but I have to have Bash there just to run it anyway. It can be pointed
to the Windows install, of course. But I was much happier with the
overall way things worked when Lilypond was installed in Cygwin. I'd
love to have Linux up on this machine, but don't have that option.

Update on Signed Trills?

2005-07-18 Thread Will Oram
There are two kinds of signed trills: ones with tiny accidentals on the
side and those with ones on top. (At least, those are the trills I work
with...contemporary trill fun is discounted.) It's a tedious process to
find good parameter values to properly position and size these
accidentals. Furthermore, because I have to treat 'tr' as a glyph
instead of \trill, markup padding is applied. This leaves you with a
trill sign sitting higher up than the signs around it.

Anyone have good code to achieve both these? The last time this
question was posed was one year ago (and by someone else), and a lot
has changed, so I'm bringing it up again. See
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-user/2004-06/msg00118.html .

PS...at last, a job interview; Han-Wen and Jan might get donation funds
from me yet! ;)

Re: Figured Bass Above Bass line

2005-07-18 Thread Trent J

Thanks Laura,
I've been to the muptopia site, but unfortunately it's a matter of finding a score typeset with the current version your working on. Convert-ly does some of the job but then there some manual recoding that needs to be done, which can prove just as scarey as starting with a blank file. (I must admit it was a steep learning curve installing python and using the python scripts in the 2.6 windows version).
I suppose the template site would become a bit of a white elephant having to continully reformat code for each version of lilypond as it evolves. I guess that's why the examples in the manual and regression test are usually on the simple side.
Meanwhile I haven't seen much music typeset and published via lilypond. The most comprehensive example I have seen is Handel's - Guilo Cesare... but unfortunately the code is so old that it doesn't help with producing scores with current versions of lilypond. We are lucky that there are such people who are readily able to help those of us who can into trouble every now and again.
Thanks again to all..

Re: Figured Bass Above Bass line

2005-07-18 Thread Trent J

Thanx Mats,
I'll give it a try tonight. Yes the description for the figured bass is a bit cryptic where the manual and regression test seem to differ. Also the examples give tend only to involve a direct score generation with no 'instrument' variables as you would normally generate so knowing what to put where is sometimes difficult.
I tend to generate templates from previous scores so once I get this score working I'll use this as a basis for instrumental scores with a figured bass. I only have to add instruments as needed the rest of the setup is there. Maybe there could be a facility where people could share templates etc it might make grasping the technicalities of lilypond a little easier if people could start by entering music instead of figuring out the coding a score.

OK, then perhaps it shouldn't be removed from the manual. However, the
property is still a bit too odd to be mentioned in the "Basic Notation"
chapter IMHO, perhaps it's better to move it to somewhere in the internals
docu, or to an example in tips&tricks.

You could write such a bar command in Scheme, but that's even more guru:ish.

Bar = #(def-music-function (parser loc str) (string?)
  (context-spec-music (make-property-set 'whichBar str) 'Timing) )

\new Staff { c \Bar #"|." c }

Oops! I was not so fast, sorry. I can see I need to rearrange my webserver
document root (soon running out of space) and therefore I left my examples
on my workstation.

Now there is a "goodies" directory with the examples which I have submitted
to the lilypond-user list:

http://d-axel.dk/pub/music/goodies/

... and another contains a copy of my try-out snippets. I must
sort them and put approved examples into the goodies-dir later:

The Roux examples are here:

http://d-axel.dk/pub/music/goodies/Roux-ex2.ly
http://d-axel.dk/pub/music/goodies/Roux-ex2.png

The stem-length adjustment for Roux I learned from the user-list,
I asked because Chopin op.28.2 did not work out without same kind
of adjustment. So somewhere on the mailinglist you could find
this specifically useful answer: use this to get long stems:

\version "2.4.5"

  \override Voice.Stem #'beamed-lengths = #'(4.0 4.0 4.0)

and this one to get more air in the setting:

  \override Score.SeparationItem #'padding = #0.5

Repeat brackets and chordmode

2005-07-18 Thread Angel Candelaria
Hi. I'm a new lilypond user, so please excuse me if
this question is too basic or elemental.
I'm writing a chord chart using \chordmode but am
having trouble with some repeats because the chord
names appear above the numbered ending brackets. How
can I make lilypond write the repeat brackets above of
the chord names?
Also, how can I place the chord name closer to the top
of the staff? Sometimes I find that the chord names
are a little far up. Thanks.

Re: Lilypond 2.6.1 on Gentoo: libstdc++

2005-07-18 Thread Daniel Johnson
Dear Martin --

I think you're going to have to do one of two things:

1. Upgrade to gcc 3.4 (unstable). The following page will be helpful:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Migrate_to_GCC_3.4
(Current stable gcc *[3.3.5.20050130-r1]* in portage maxes out at
libstdc++.so.5.0.7)

*OR*

2. Remove the autopackage and build lilypond from source; it's not too
painful unless you need to build the documentation as well. There's an
ebuild here:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97574
If you're not concerned about building documentation, edit the ebuild
and lower the guile version requirements to 1.6.7 (my ebuild requires
guile-1.7.2 from CVS; building *that* is left as the proverbial exercise
for the reader).
Rename the ebuild to the version number you want to build; the given
ebuild is for 2.7.0 but it should work fine for any of the 2.6/2.7 series.

automatically resets it to << \voiceOne \\ \voiceTwo >> even if it's inside
another voice number. I would have to explicitly state the voice I'm working
with to change it. So Georges, I tried changing your \stemUp and \stemDown's
to different voices. I hope I'm on the right track with my thinking.

I have a small base of how-to examples which are essential for
small-private-scale writing of any (classical) music. Well, it is definitely
not finished, but I happened to be able to answer your question.

Have a look.

I am sorry that I stay on a conservative version 2.4.5, but lately the speed
of updates has by far outmaneuvered my setup. I hope the stem - length will
change in your Lilypond-version too.

RE: Custom markup

2005-07-18 Thread Sven Axelsson
OK, thanks. That gives the correct output.

But how would I wrap this into a self-contained command?

If I try

tc = \once \override TextScript #'staff-padding = #2 \markup { \column { "T"
"C" } }

then Lily fails (understandably) when I try to use as { a_\tc }

I would like to have the command completely self-contained,
since this is an abbreviated notation, and I want to be able to
switch between this and the full notation that instead inserts
a complex grace note, without any changes to the score.

That is also the reason for why I want the syntax to be

{ a\tc } instead of { a_\tc }

Re: Custom markup

2005-07-18 Thread Mats Bengtsson

One useful trick here is to increase the value of the
staff-padding property of the TextScript object. This property
determines the minimum distance from the script to the staff lines,
so as long as you set this value large enough so that no note gets
too close to the text scripts, they will all be vertically aligned.
For the syntax, I don't see any alternative, but is it really that
hard to press an extra '_' key every now and then?

I have this now

tc = \markup { \column { "T" "C" } }

and using it like this

\relative c' { c4_\tc g'_\tc b_\tc }

which is OK, except for the mark shifting up and down a little
depending on the notes. How can I fix that?

And ideally I'd like the command to be c\tc and not c_\tc as
of now. Is that possible?

Thanks

That's the way it's supposed to be. If you want the two notes to be
treated

as two separate notes, use slurs instead of ties.

Slurs are normally also treated as melisma, i.e. you only get one
syllable per slur, see "7.3.4 The Lyrics context" in the manual.
You can set the property ignoreMelismata if you don't want this to
happen, see "7.3.5 Flexibility in alignment"

The reason I use it from time to time (maybe I'm a guru, but the
problem is definitely not a guru problem) is that if you move the
barline engraver from the score context to the staff context, you need
it to get any bars at all.

The reason to move the barline engraver is that I sometimes find it
easier to find errors in note entry if the erroneous barlines aren't
duplicated in all staves of a score.

So I would say that a non-guru might well need to use whichBar rather
than bar. If \bar would work for the barline engraver in any context,
then maybe what you say would be true.

You could use ps2eps from GhostScript (at least in my installation
there's always a ps file) or generate the eps from the pdf.

Re: Figured Bass Above Bass line

2005-07-18 Thread Mats Bengtsson

First of all, I note that you are using a feature that is not mentioned
in the manual, namely \figures, which turns out to be shorthand for
\new FiguredBass \figuremode
(The only documentation of this feature can be found in
http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.4/Documentation/topdocs/out-www/NEWS.html
but it is also used in the figured-bass.ly Regression Test example)

Anyway, the problem with your code is that the FiguredBass context
cannot be included within a Staff context (but it can of course be
included in a StaffGroup). So, it should help to move it outside the
Staff context:

\score {
 \new StaffGroup <<
   \new Staff{ \violinsolo }
   \fb
   \new Staff { \continuo }

\layout {  }

Please keep the discussions on the thread, i.e. reply to old messages that you
refer to, instead of writing new ones. That way it's easier for us to relate

You probably want to switch the two voices, i.e.

  << { \stemUp s e16[ s e s e s e s e s e ] } \\ { \stemDown e16[ s gis s fis
s gis s a s fis s ] } >>

I can't reproduce this (the a is not overwritten by any beam if I compile your
example). If it really does, it's a bug which we would like to know more
about. Can you please send a complete example in which the 'a' is overwritten
by a beam?

Nobody forces you to use whichBar. The property is not really useful for
non-gurus, as a normal user it's sufficient to control barlines with the \bar
command, together with properties such as defaultBarType, barAlways and
automaticBars.

Graham - Perhaps it would be good to rephrase the last sections of this:
http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.6/Documentation/user/out-www/lilypond/Bar-lines.html
I don't see why any non-guru would want to set whichBar explicitly, so perhaps
that documentation should be moved to internals.

Figured Bass Above Bass line

Re: Figured Bass Improvements Potential Sponsorship of Improving this Feature.

2005-07-18 Thread Mats Bengtsson

Trent J wrote:

Dear All,

Currently I am thinking about sponsoring the improvement of the figured
bass system within LilyPond.

The Main features that I am proposing are:

1: The alignment of the figures are calcuated from the top of the
figured group and spaced appropriately from the bottom of the note they
appear under. i.e. the figures will be placed dynamically from the bass
note rather than the current method of aligning along a baseline based
on the number of figures. Also the same facility to place the figures
above the continuo part and again dynamically spaced from the note to
avoid collisions.

If I understand you correctly, you could get exactly this using text
scripts. One of the main feature requests that initiated the current
support for figured bass was that the figures should be vertically
aligned.

I just looked at a number of scores I have at home and in modern
editions, I found examples of both schemes. In a Bärenreiter edition,
for example, they mostly used vertically aligned figures but with a
few exceptions. Same with Doblinger. Universal Edition and some others,
on the other hand, follow your proposal.

In my copies of original prints from 17th and 18th century, the figured
bass is always printed above the base line (but in contrast to modern
editions, they never included a realisation of the figured bass, which
can motivate the choice in modern editions to put the figures below the
base line). However, the main thing is that I didn't find any example
of original prints where the figures where vertically aligned. Just as
you propose, the vertical position is determined by the corresponding
note.

2: The introduction of spanner lines. These are used mainly in french
baroque music as well as some sacred music scores. They indicate the
prolongation of a figure or group of figures. e.g

6 --

4 --

2 ---

or

6

4 -

2

indicating the entire group to be prolonged.

or

6 ---

5 --3

2 -

indicating that the 6th and 2nd stay the same but the 5th moved to a 3rd.

3. Lastly that the figures are centred on the number with modifying
accidentals placed on either side. Also accidentals by themselves can be
used eg.

#

5

indicating a sharpened 3rd.

If anyone else has ideas or wishes to contribute to the funding of this
feature please contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
.

One major deficiency, of course, is that we currently don't have font
support for slashed figures that were commonly used at least in late
17th and 18th century instead of the explicit sharps and flats.

Re: lilypond-book problem remains in 2.6.1

2005-07-18 Thread Mats Bengtsson

I think the main problem is that you explicitly specify the line width
of your score. If you don't do that, lilypond-book will automatically
find out the line width used in the text part of your LaTeX document
and use that also for the music examples. Then, all lines of the score
will also appear where you want them.
If you want short lines in the scores than in the rest of the document,
then you could use
\newcommand{\betweenLilyPondSystem}[1]{\linebreak}
as has already been pointed out in an earlier email.

Wish to give up my Cygwin maintainer position

2005-07-18 Thread Bertalan Fodor
Dear developers & users of Lilypond,

as you can see, it takes more and more time for me to release a
packaging of lilypond for cygwin. It has several causes:
- I'm getting less and less spare time, because of changes in my job and
my family
- I'm not a Unix guru
- I can't really follow the changes in the structure and the build
procedure of lilypond
- I'm using the native version now

I would like to spend more time with
- developing LilyPondTool for jEdit
- earning money, which I can donate for the development of LilyPond
- cooking patches for LilyPond

I'm planning to regularly build a version of LilyPond for cygwin,
because I think I will use it for creating my patches, but maintaining
would take much more time, because I would have to make it work for
everyone, make it conform to the cygwin-structure, read the cygwin-list
etc. That's what I don't have time for.

So I wish to give up maintaining the Cygwin package of Lilypond. I think
it should be taken by someone, who still prefer the cygwin package on
the native version. I could share my experiences with him/her, to help
taking maintainership.

I do use it extensively, that's what I developed it for LilyPondTool :-)
Before OOo I used TeX to hyphenate, but involved much more staff, more
configuration etc. However, AFAIK the free hyphenation engines all use
the same libHnj (TeX)-based hyphenation logic, which is not very
appropriate for hyphenating lyrics for music, especially with english.
For example, it will never hyphenate some sort words, for some
typographical reason (which comes from the very annoying phylosophy of
TeX-related stuff wanting to be too clever).

If you have problems or ideas with using the LilyPondTool hyphenation,
please send your questions/bug reports/suggestions to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or to our project page on
http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/lily4jedit. I will improve it on
user request, and I'm very open to accept patches (the sources are

"The command \bar bartype is a short cut for doing \set Timing.whichBar =

"|" everywhere.

BTW, that page also mentions the property that you are looking for.
