I don't really see any clear distinction between templates and the examples in the LSR. Most templates we have today contain some example music and I guess that people usually cut bits and pieces from both templates and snippets when they want to set up their own files. So, why not include also templates in the LSR? Re: is Lilypond difficult? A composer's point of view
Mehmet Okonsar wrote: I'm a 12 year Finale user and I also wrote some 500 pages of music with Sibelius and I also know somewhat Igor Engraver and Geniesoft's Overture.. I must say, Lilypond is the winner! Incidentally Lily is the name of my wife:) I had some serious concerns at the beginning. First of all it seems awkward to write text files without seeing the music paper and many fellow friends composers feel the same. However, only a small practice proved it to be a false concern. As a composer ( not a copyist neither a programmer) I can say that typesetting music in a text environment is far better in many points to actually looking at the music paper. I think Lilypond is easier than Finale. One thing I'm still not very comfortable with is: I feel like a gap between the manual and the program reference. The reference is great but written in a style somewhat foreign to me. The journey for a newcomer which starts at manual's first page is not without blackholes. Things that only get clear many many practice weeks later.. Feel free to point to specific issues that you think can be improved or, even better, write some suggestions to be cut into the manual. Also more advanced editor support may be one of the needs. Here is the way which really made me start: I use WinEdt and I made some 200+ macros which are simply auto-texts to save you a trip to the manual and many probable syntax errors.. The point is whenever I want to set a 2d and a 3rd. voice I just have to click a menu item and fill the notes. Did you try jedit? It's probably the editor that provides the best support for LilyPond, including an automatic template setup feature and it's available for Windows. /Mats ___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user

calculating durations
Hi all, I am a new user of LilyPond and I am currently writing a program that transforms scores expressed in a piano-roll-like format into LilyPond scores, for the purpose of typesetting/printing. In the source format, music is expressed (like Midi, I suppose) as strings of notes with absolute durations, without a notion of time signatures, barlines, ties, etc. Is there a tried-and-true algorithm for converting such notes into their proper equivalents in LilyPond, given a time signature? I'm especially thinking of how to resolve a note like c3 (where 3 means 3 quarter note beats) into Lilypond's c2. Any suggestions? I suppose this problem relates to quantization but in this case, the input data is mostly clean and unambiguous. I don't think the solution should be too compilcated. Just as an example: Someone has written (still preliminary) support for LilyPond inclusion to ConTeXt (alternative to LaTeX), see http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.tex.context/22512. Well, the script calls lilypond filename. Whoever wants to use this script, has to dig into the source and modify the line calling lilypond to match his own installation path. (In Linux this is not a problem at all.) But it's not only because of this single exception that may be used by some tens of people, out of which most use Linux. This looks like a lilypond misbehaviour (It may be that it's Microsoft's fault, but you can't make anything about it). You can't expect a programmer writing some piece of software which uses LilyPond to write: if OS == windows find the path where lilypond resides and call it with the whole path I don't even dare to start thinking what would happen if the path would have to be hardcoded for a GhostScript call. That is for other programs in the lilypond bin directory. Why doesn't it happen already at the installation time then? People should be able to call lilypond from command line anyway. Thank you very much for the hint anyway, it will do for now, but it would be great if this could be fixed in the future releases. jEdit - translation
Hi @ll! A friend of my family had some problems with capella typesetting different voices at the same time.. So I suggested to use lilypond. Put writing text without a great editor is a pain... You forgett to save and computer crashes - all your work is gone and so on. The only great editor I know are: vim jedit emacs. (of course there are much more editors such like cooledit or nedit .. but I think they haven't as much features as jedit has and you can really extend jedit..) Because this friend doesn't use computers very often I decided that vim isn't a choice ;) And jEdit wins because of lily4jedit plugin. The only drawback I know is speed due to java.. ;( I don't know emacs (lisp) that well excpet that it also runs on windows. The next problem was: She doesn't speak any English. Of course you can learn where to save a file and so on, but what to do if there is a message The following files haven't been saved, yet .. or disk full.. That was the reason why I've asked at the jEdit developement list why not introduce some basic support for translations.. The lead developper Slava Pestov told me (and others) that jEdit is feature complete and that I doesn't want wait for translators till he can release new features.. and I he and others don't want to cope with the hassle of naming features.. So for example if someone is speaking of a Klappe who should know that he means folding ? And of course it would be hard to find people who are willing to translate the whole manual.. I think that is the reason why the manual of lilypond ins't to be translated as well as far as I know... So spend some days looking at the jEdit source and found that they use property classes for storing all messages. A Property class is simply a list. My Implementation by know just loads the translated property files after the original ones replacing the English content. It works fine but isn't perfect, e.g. umlauts aren't shown correctly by now. And of course the menu is out of sync with the manual ! I also talked to Jan and he told me to send the patch to them when it's perfect ;) It will never be perfect because of some other things like shortcuts: You can use Meta/Alt jkli to move the cursor... That's the default but that also does mean you can't use jkli for shortcuts of the main menu.. So I want to address you to get to know how many people are interested and to decide how much further effort to put into this project.. I want to do some other things, as well :) All you have to do is compiling jedit 4.3pre2 with my patch or ask me for the jedit.jar file. Then you have to put the translated jedit_gui.props file into the directory translation where jedit.jar is located and rename it to jedit_gui_props.de I've decided to call the translated files this way because they don't harm existing jedit versions.. Translating plugins works the same way.. but you have to put the translated file back into plugin.jar Marc Weber mmmhhh Writing such emails takes a lot of time .. ___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user

Re: Lilypond for Windows 2.5.28 - Guile error
Mojca Miklavec writes: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.tex.context/22512. Well, the script calls lilypond filename. Maybe it should call $(which lilypond) filename. Why doesn't it happen already at the installation time then? Because I do not know how to do that, and none of the core developers use windows or knows very much about it. I tried using BAT wrappers to fix this problem of installation time prefixes, but that was a complete and utter disaster. I had quite some help and input from windows users/programmers, but we could not manage to produce something that would work on more than one flavour of windows. Any suggestions? I suppose this problem relates to quantization but in this case, the input data is mostly clean and unambiguous. I don't think the solution should be too compilcated. This is done by midi2ly, so both the above solutions would fix this. not that I know of . I guess you'd be better off with Completion noteheads. (see the manual). I ran lily (2.4) on this score: \score{ { c4. d8 e2 e2. f4 } \midi{} } Then I ran midi2ly on the resulting midi file. The resulting .ly contains: c4. d8 e2 | % 2 e2. f4 | .. which, as far as I understand, shows that midi2ly does what Matthew needs. (bug or feature? :) ) Still, it's a good idea to look at completion heads, to properly handle notes that cross bar boundaries. -- Erik ___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user

Please read the manual carefully (section 6.3.2) - you must type in everything literally. In this case, you need to use a backslash, i.e. \key instead of /key. everywhere i try gives me an error... also is there a way i can force the number of bars per line, and number of lines per page? -- You can insert \break and \pageBreak commands, see manual section 10.1.8. In most cases you probably don't want to use \break - lilypond is written to automatically insert linebreaks where they look best. (\pageBreak is however useful to avoid bad page turns) -- Erik ___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user

That's why the translation properties are loaded after the original ones.. So if the verison of jEdit changes and some features are added they will be labeled at least in English :) And I don't think it's a good idea to write a plugin which modifies jedit.jar because then you can run into deep trouble providing support, can't you? If you know another solution.. please tell me. Perhaps there is another way I've missed? Of course you can only exchange the property files.. But my goal was beeing able to switch languages if you want to look s.th. up in help and compare the menu entries.. At the moment you have an extra option where you can enter 'de' for German and nothing for no translation..
