Thanks. I've filed your code away for future use. I'd already coded it the
other way - rearranged the few chords that needed it so that the notes between
which I wanted the slide appeared last in the chord <...> construct, and for
the two chords where I needed to indicate a 2nd slide I used another voice with
hidden notes.

Absolute newbie: how do I ... ?

2008-11-14 Thread guysnape

I've just got Lilypond working, I want to use it to print some music reading
practice sheets for my son who is learning piano. Is it possible to produce
a page containing the following?

A text instruction (e.g. "Write the note name underneath each note")

A staff with notes on it with an underscore character or two exactly under
each note (I guess treating them as lyrics), leaving sufficient space for
the letter name to be written.

Another text instruction ("Put the correct note above each letter")

A blank staff with letter names evenly spaced underneath (or between the
treble and bass staves).

Any guidance gratefully received.

Thanks,

- guy

jedit/lilypond tool/surround text

2008-11-14 Thread northofscotland

The excellent free Notetab program has available a useful feature to enclose
selected text in a pair of characters - brackets etc.

I have often felt this feature would be useful when using lilypond tool to
put in slurs etc after typing music. Does anyone know of a simple
addon/macro or whatever that would facilitate this?
Thanks

I would do this with lilypond-book:

It is almost certainly possible to do this without lilypond-book but I
have never had reason to do it so I don't know how.

I haven't tried it, but you should be able to do this with lyrics.
The only slight complication is that - and _ are special characters
and I don't know how you would display a dash underneath a note rather
than between syllables. It might work if you put them in quotes - eg:

\addlyrics { "_" "_" "_" "_" }

> Another text instruction ("Put the correct note above each letter")

I think this will do what you want:

The hidden notes will be treated as any other notes, so you can add
the names underneath as lyrics.

Hope this helps,

Lighter appearance

2008-11-14 Thread Johan Vromans
Hi,

While comparing the LilyPond gegerated output with the output of a
competitor program, I noticed that the LP outout is much 'heavier'.

See e.g., http://www.squirrel.nl/pub/xfer/lilsib.jpg .

The top line is from LilyPond, the bottom line is from a Sibelius
printout. I think the larger noteheads in combination with the thinner
lines make the score easier to read.

Is there a set of settings to make LP output lighter? Setting

  line-thickness = \staff-space / 16

seems a good start, but I assume there's more to it.

Re: fontconfig caches

2008-11-14 Thread Bailey James E .
Ah, that's a bit closer. I have fonts.conf in /usr/local/etc/fonts/
but it tells me that editing it would be pointless, since it will be
overwritten the next time the fontconfig cache is built, and I should
instead use local.conf. I assumed I could just add local.conf to my ~/
etc/fonts/, and that the lilypond fonts.conf would be sufficient for
my new local.conf. Unfortunately, I still get the fontconfig cache
built in each directory I run lilypond in. I thought maybe because
normal users don't usually have access to write to /usr/local/ that
might be a problem, but even when I have fontconfig write the default
cache to ~/etc/fonts/ it rebuilds the font cache in the working
directory, and I even tried making myself an administrator, but that
didn't help either. Ah well, at its longest, rebuilding the cache
takes 10 seconds. I can live with that once per directory. I just wish
I didn't have the annoying NONE/ all the time.

Re: Absolute newbie: how do I ... ?

2008-11-14 Thread Jonathan Kulp
I've put together a quick sample of how this could work. I'm doing this
sort of thing with my counterpoint workbook at the moment and
lilypond-book is excellent for it.

Two source files are attached, a .lytex and a .ly. The .lytex file
links to the .ly file, so be sure to put them in the same directory
before you run it. I think it will work without any extra LaTeX
packages. Just follow the instructions in Application Usage for running
lilypond-book and it should work fine:

http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.11/Documentation/user/lilypond-program/LilyPond_002dbook#LilyPond_002dbook

I've also attached the pdf file showing the final result.

Good luck to you (and your son!),

Certainly, \markup blocks can be written outside of a \score block. So
you could create a simple file like:

\paper { ragged-right=##f indent = 0 }
\layout { \context { \Score \remove Bar_engraver } }
\markup "Write the note name underneath each note"
\score {
   <<
  \new Staff \new Voice = practice \relative c' { c2 d e f g a b
c }

  \new Lyrics \lyricsto practice \lyricmode { _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ }
   >>
}

\markup "Put the correct note above each letter"
\score {
   <<
  \new Staff \new Voice = practice \relative c' { \hideNotes c2 d
e f g a b c }

  \new Lyrics \lyricsto practice \lyricmode { C D E F G A B C }

While I'm sure there is, I'll say that lilypond's heavier look is
intentional (see http://lilypond.org/web/about/automated-engraving/typography-features)
. I'll say that the lighter look of the scores produced by most other
programs makes them almost impossible for me to read, at the very
least difficult.

Regardless, I would suggest re-reading through LM 4 Tweaking output
and NR 5 Changing defaults. How to go about making those changes is
discussed there.

and one large file, c. 800Kb on my system. Check the
date/time the large file was last modified. It should
only be changed infrequently (I don't know what triggers
it.) If it changes on every LP run, then this is the cause
of the slowness. Two of the smaller files should be rebuilt
on the first run after a new install, which causes the
this first run to take more time, around 20 secs more,
than subsequent runs.

I just installed GUB builds of 2.11.63 on Windows XP and x86
GNU/Linux, and the cache folder has the same name on both of these
systems. After the first run, 15 cache files are created on
GNU/Linux, and 3 are created on Windows XP. And exactly one of these
cache files is significantly larger than the others (163Kb on
GNU/Linux, and 169Kb on Windows XP), just as you have said.

However, on second and subsequent runs, the timestamp on the large
cache file updates each time on Windows XP. This does not happen for
me on GNU/Linux.

This seems to be the reason behind the slightly "delayed" start after
every invocation of LilyPond on Windows XP. lilypond --verbose shows
the delay happening at the "Building font database." step. The delay
on GNU/Linux is non-existent.

Is the large cache file being rebuilt mistakenly (on some Windows
systems)?

Yes; that is the problem exactly. Every other case of slowness on Windows,
both XP and Vista, which has been examined closely has resulted in the
same conclusion. The question is, what causes it to happen?

Once LilyPond has the font caches computed correctly, running times

Ok I just booted back into Vista and checked the fontconfig cache's time
and date stamp, then ran my test lilypond file. The fontconfig cache was
rebuilt. The date/time stamp changed to today's date and time. I ran the
file again, the cache was rebuilt again. First time took about 90
seconds, second time 70 seconds. On my son's laptop (a Dell that's about
4 years old) there's a partition with XP and it ran the test file in about
10 seconds, which is still slower than the 2-3 seconds it takes under
Ubuntu Linux on the same laptop.

So, is there a way to tell the machine where the fontconfig cache file is
so that it doesn't create a new one every time? I'll be glad to keep
testing this but only about once a day.

OK, Jonathan, thanks. Let's see if we together can get a bit further with

First, a couple of questions:

1) Do you remember the version number of the earliest LilyPond you

released around March 08?

2) When you upgrade do you use the uninstall utility that comes with

The application's install routine is supposed to make an entry in the
Add/Remove list that includes a pointer to its own uninstaller. Assuming
this entry was made correctly, there should be no difference between
using Add/Remove and invoking the uninstaller directly.

The standar way of uninstalling lilypond on windows is to launch the
Uninstall program found into the lilypond entry of the Start button->
programs menu.

I think the Windows builtin Control Panel -> uninstall feature should
use this program.

RE: LilyPond is excessively slow on Windows Vista

2008-11-14 Thread Nick Payne
I have a Vista Business system installed a week ago that has LP 2.11.63 on
it - no upgrade from an older version. The large font file in
C:\Users\Nick\.lilypond-fonts.cache-2 has the most recent date stamp of the
files in that dir, and is dated 12th November, which is last Wednesday, so
it's not being updated each time I run LP, as I've been using it every day.
However, I installed and first used LP on this system on 8th November, so
the cache has been updated since I first used LP. Would using an em dash in
a score have updated the cache? It would have been on Wednesday that I was
experimenting with adding \char ##x2014 to a score.

Alright, I uninstalled by going through the program menu and choosing
the uninstall script. The process looked exactly the same as when I did
it from the Control Panel. (Either way it's incredibly slow. Why is it
so much slower on Windows than on Linux?)

After uninstalling I found, though, that the Lilypond directory was
still there in the Program Files directory, and from that I could tell
the date on which I first installed LP on this laptop, 12 June 2008. I
deleted the LP directory from Program Files, hoping that a *really*
fresh install would fix the problem of the fontconfig cache rebuilding
all the time. It didn't help. I reinstalled Lilypond (2.11.63-1) and
ran my test file again, twice, and the cache was rebuilt on the second
run just like the first. Anything else I should try or information I
could provide to help track down the problem?

This is not the default output of LilyPond. I have tried to reproduce
your example and it is clearly better, bolder and more readable than
the bottom sibelius example for my eyes. See attached PNG

Then what does the flag do?

I though I saw in the manual someplace that LP makes a *.ep file and
converts that to PDF if the flag is set.

I agree -- are you sure the top line isn't from Finale or
something? It looks incredibly bad. WTF is up with the gap
between the sixteenth and eighth in the second bar from the end?!
LilyPond would *not* produce that.

Not sure, but this fontconfig bug report looks really interesting, and
could be related:

point and click PDF

2008-11-14 Thread strk
I've been told about the point & click
feature so I had a try.
Evince wasn't so helpful in telling me what
was going wrong so I tried xpdf, as suggested
by the manual.

Xpdf shows the url as being something like:

 textedit:///tmp/amadomio.ly:137:5:1

which becomes:

 lilypond-invoke-editor /tmp/amadomio.ly:137:5:1

But that command, in turn, complains with:

 lilypond-invoke-editor (GNU LilyPond) 2.10.33
 ERROR: In procedure string-split:
ERROR: Wrong type argument in position 1 (expecting string): #f

Any idea ?

programming error: when \break used before \grace or after \afterGrace in combination with proportional notation

2008-11-14 Thread V!ctor Adán
Hello All,

After trying for hours to figure out why my LilyPond score was generating
programming error messages on compilation, I finally found the culprit and
was able to come up with a pair of minimal examples generating the errors. I
searched the mailing lists for solutions to this, but I found no posts of
this specific problem, so I guess this is new.

The problem seems to be occur when combining three things:
1. proportional notation:
  proportionalNotationDuration = #(ly:make-moment 1 34)
  \override SpacingSpanner #'strict-note-spacing =##t
2. \grace or \afterGrace notes
3. \break or \pageBreak immediately before \grace or immediately after
\afterGrace notes.

The two errors I get are:
"programming error: bounds of spanner are invalid"
and
"programming error: No spring between column 1 and next one
continuing, cross fingers"

If I remove the strict-note-spacing = ##t assignment, everything works fine.

Minimal code examples are included here, together with the LilyPond output.

Any ideas how this can be fixed or how to go around it? Is this a bug?

Many thanks,

V!ctor Adan.

PS Since this seems like a bug, I'm sending to the bug-lilypond mailing list
too, just in case.

I set that exact line in LilyPond 2.11.64. I needed to do some manual
beaming to get the same beaming as in the top line.

The rest glyphs look in Johan's sample look identical to those in the
LilyPond output.

The note spacing in Johan's sample is dramatically different (worse) than in
my LilyPond output. The staff lines in my LilyPond output are lighter than
those in Johan's sample. The slurs in my output are lighter than those in
Johan's sample. The noteheads in my output are heavier than those in
Johan's output, but not as large as those in his Sibelius output.

For your reference, I've attached my LilyPond output.
