I had done a convert-ly and recompiled, and I suppose that's why it pointed down to where the changes were listed. Indeed changes a convert-ly run the whole document (if you click OK in the convert-ly dialog). When that happens, the point and click locations are lost. This is because the editor (a component in Qt4) looses the positions of all text cursors when the whole document text is replaced. Text cursors remember their position in a document while it is being edited, that's why I use them for point and click (which was in Frescobaldi 1 called smart point and click). But when a region of text is deleted, all cursors that were in it, now point to the place the deleted region started. When then new text is inserted, all cursors move to the end of the inserted position. This is Qt4 behaviour, even when you delete a region and then undo it, the point and click positions are lost. But simply recompiling (even without changing a note) updates the PDF and that triggers a re-load of the point and click positions. -- Wilbert Berendsen (http://www.wilbertberendsen.nl) -- Fr. \acciaccatura before barline?
Does anyone know how to place an \acciaccatura *before* the barline? I'm using the following in copying a score, and where the original shows it before the bar, Lily wants to place it after the barline. I'm thinking that the original is perhaps musicologically wrong, but accurate in its intent with the timing of the snippet. Line of music follows: cis' g' a4-\sfz r r2 | r r4 a4( \mf \acciaccatura { b16[ cis] } | d4-.) cis e-. d fis-. b d-. | I've placed the barcheck '|' where the original shows it, but Lily places the barline before the acciaccatura. Otherwise the construction looks fine. So my question is, how can I force the barline *before*, or should I not even try, because it *should* be after, as shown? An easy way to convert from absolute to \relative?

But now I'd like to update them (2.15.x), and while convert-ly does a good job of changing up the basic syntax, I'd like to know if there's an easy way of getting rid of all the ' and , so the piece can be done in \relative mode. carol booklet
Hi all, I don't know if it's useful to anyone, but a collection of the most common Public Domain Christmas carols in a booklet form is at http://blog.daveg.ca/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Christmas_Carol_Booklet.pdf It's printed on legal-size paper, and if you put adjacent pages (1 2, 3 4, etc) on opposite sides of the page makes everything in the correct order. Just so's you know what I did, here it is: 1. Compile each song in the normal manner to produce the song in PDF format. 2. Compile with the following to produce a PNG lilypond -dbackend=eps -dno-gs-load-fonts -dinclude-eps-fonts --png myfile.ly 3. In an OpenOffice document, set up the page size, two columns, etc 4. Make all the pages you want, and put the correct page numbers on the page 5. I also made my table of contents in the order I wished, so I could refer to it as I installed the PNGs 6. Load the PNG on the desired page. Immediately make it wrap through. (This makes your filling of the document much easier.) Then re-size -- usually just cutting off a bit of the bottom of the page will do. 7. Do the same for each song in order. I realise that PNGs are not the best, but since these were being shrunk from original size, it doesn't seem to be a problem. Also, font-size is not totally uniform. But with relatively little work, and without a lot of geeky moves, I have a booklet that is now highly configurable. For those of you who do -- have a blessed Christmas. Gordon+ -- Fr. I now have quite a store of Christmas carols and similar which I'd like to do up into a booklet, perhaps printed ;landscape on letter or legal paper. I don't need to get fancy with page numbers or anything like that, as long as all my booklets are printed the same. Re: Is this some sort of glissando?
Phil, What you have there is not a glissando, but rather a bar where alternating notes are to be played as sixteenths (the two beams) for the entire bar (the dotted half). I'm not sure how to render this particular thing in Lilypond, but you could simply write out all the sixteenths. But (without looking it up) there is probably a way to do it fairly easy. RE: Subject: bar line placing question
Mark, Your problem is in your first full bar. There are too many 16ths in *that* bar. When you change the g2 to a g4. , everything appears to line up as you have intended. Lily has trouble when a note of greater value than the remainder of the measure is placed there -- so she does the best she can to put everything down (instead of, say, failing) so that you can troubleshoot. Re: intro; art song example or template?
Hi Ivan, Aside from reading the manuals -- especially the one called 'getting started', there is something else I think you'll find handy. I started with Lilypond way back in 2002 or '03 when the only way to use it was with the command line. Nowadays there are a number of editors and interfaces that make everything much easier. For example, jEdit with LilypondTool, which works on any system (I have it on Ubuntu, PC-BSD, and Windoze). Install jEdit (jedit.org), and when it is up and running, click on 'Plugins' and install LilypondTool. This will give you a powerful tool for editing your .ly files with automatic colouring and indentation for human-readable clarity, a toolbar for compiling your files and opening the .pdf and .midi files, an on-board Lilypond manual, and even a virtual keyboard for note entry. It also has a template builder, so all you would have to do, for example is tell jEdit that you want a song with Soprano and Guitar, and presto! it creates the file with all the right sections -- you merely enter the notes, dynamics and words, and you're off to the races! It will even give you the option of notating your guitar in either or both of regular staff and tablature. Hope this helps. Hi again, I did a bit of tweaking for you. Hope you don't mind, but it produces a nicer-looking piece of sheet music. As I said in my last email, I'm not familiar with the piece, so only you can judge the correctness of my suggestions, but I did the following: added a quarter-rest instead of a skip at the beginning changed {ragged-right=##f} instead of ##t made the last note a whole-note to complete the bar. You might want to put some header lines in with title, etc. All this makes things scan correctly. Re: Last line doesn't wrap
Paul, A good scan through the manuals would be the best place to start in order to figure out how to place a second verse in there. My quick thought (I've never actually done this before) would be to have the second verse in its own section as follows: texttwo = \lyricmode { Here are some more words for the se -- cond verse } And then add the following line to the \score section below the similar line: \new Lyrics \lyricsto one \texttwo If you do that now, the words will appear right at the beginning of the song, but there is a way (look it up -- I haven't figured that out yet) to make these words delay till measure 18. You might also want to add \markup^ {D.S.} at the end, and a \segno at bar 18. And I'm thinking that you sing the beginning as a refrain at the end, right? I wouldn't mind a copy of your finished code. Good luck! :-) Blessings, Gordon+ -- Fr. Hi! What I have done with similar songs is to write the third verse as part of the second and then put a repeat for the first part, and continue the melody on to the end of that (longer) verse, and put a DC at the end, and a Fine at the end of the regular verse. Hi! I have used Lilypondtool both on Windoze, and on Ubuntu, and the toolbar immediately above the open file has little icons for everything you need. One of them is a tiny sheet of paper representing the PDF option. Do you have that on your version? If so, simply click that (once not twice) and your PDF should appear in a separate window in jEdit's native PDF viewer. Especially if your compilation creates a ./ file name as I see it does. I don't see why this yields the output you cited, but this may be just due to a missing somewhere. But I'm pretty sure that's where the error lies. But, really - if the editor you're working with writes the files as UTF-8 (which you should assure anyway), you'll be better off using the correct non-digit symbols. Risto, Thanks for the help, but I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT! I'm not a geek, and although I understand UTF-8, I have never worked in hex, or even Latex. Bonjour, Valentin, Yes, here is my file. I don't mind people seeing it (not my composition, and the composer is personally to me -- I simply Lilyponded his melody; words are public domain). Re: How do I put parentheses around some notes?
Reinhold - The parenthesis thing you pointed to doesn't help. What I want is to parenthesize a complete chord, not just individual notes, and I've searched the lsr and the index of the manual and can't find it. What I have is four parts with their collective notes (naturally for a hymn), and for certain of the lines of lyrics, some stanzas have a leading note, some don't. So the chord that is a leading note needs to be parenthesized. How do I do that? Also, for dashed or dotted slurs, I don't know if it's my PDF display that doesn't show it, but it doesn't seem dotted to me -- simply greyed-out. jEdit with the built-in PDF display. How do I put parentheses around some notes?
Hi all, I'm reproducing a Christmas carol from a book I have, mostly in order to transpose it. The composer and poet are both long dead, though, so the piece is public domain afaik. Some of the lines of lyrics have a leading note (a \partial 4), but some of them have no leading note. In the book, these notes are enclosed in parentheses. The piece is in four voices (SATB) so the notes for each of these locations are naturally in different places in the ly file. But how do I put parentheses around these (only sometimes-used) notes? Also, what about dotted slurs for when one or more syllables are sung to a pair of notes? I've searched the manual for these two items, but can't seem to locate them. How to put chords on a score automatically
Hi list, I'm working on a four-part score for barbershop chorus. It has four separate voices of course, and words to the lead line, as well as words to various parts of other voices. My question is this: As I arrange this, I want to have the chords I am creating displayed so I can see where the parts should go. Is there a way to have LilyPond display the chords I have created in these disparate voices? I know that the chords thus formed are not very smart (i.e. it can't recognise inversions) but that's OK -- I will remove these when the arrangement is complete. BTW, I *did* search through the Manual to see if there was something there, but could not find it -- if it *is* there, I will be happy to read the relevant entries, once they are pointed out. Occasional lyrics attached to another voice
Hey, list, I have a question about fitting lyrics. In the file I've pasted below this message is the hymn I am arranging for Barbershop chorus. The final stanza has all the four parts singing separately, as you can see. But there are occasional spots, as in stanza 1 where some parts will repeat a lyric. If you compile this file, you will see on the PDF that the \markup words I put in there follow the notes, rather than being in a nice line. Can someone suggest how to do this most conveniently? Each of the *other* three parts (tenor, baritone, bass) might have bits of this in certain spots. Problems with Midi
OK, I'm gonna try this again ... A few days ago, I wrote the list asking a question about midi, and saw that my message came out in the digest, but I've got no help about it, so here's my question again: I'm arranging a hymn for barbershop chorus, and frequently want to check my work to make sure I get the unique barbershop harmonies correct. I was playing the midi file (with simple piano -- instrument is not important). This was working fine until I introduced some 'divisi' voices in the last stanza. Then, all of a sudden the midi file seemed only to contain (or at least, only to play) the lower staff notes. Nothing I do seems to help this -- I can't play the full piece. I've tried with the jEdit LilyPond Tool interface, and with WinAmp -- both sound the same. When I compile, I get no warnings about anything going wrong, nor do I have any problem with the PDF display. I *would* appreciate faster compile times, but I'm told I need more RAM for that, so I'll settle for fixing my midi ... I am using LilyPond 2.11.14, jEdit 4.3pre9, LilyPond Tool, and Windoze XP Pro. My file follows my signature. Thanks for your help. Fr. Re: Problems with Midi
Fred, Thanks so much for such a simple solution. Funny thing is, I didn't change the \score section *or* the \layout or the \midi section. I simply introduced some new notes and parts, when the midi quit working. But it works fine now, thank you very much. BTW, what errors were you getting when you compiled it? I get no errors on my system -- it compiles fine, although I now realise I've got a lot of note-reworking to do now ... Blessings, Fr. Gordon+ -- Fr. Trevor, Thanks for your help. Actually, Fred gave me a very simple fix -- move the curly brace for the end of the \score section to the very end of the piece -- and it worked -- now I'm on my way. Midi -- What am I doing wrong?
Hi List, I've been working on this piece for Barbershop chorus, and because of the features of close harmony, I frequently review the midi file (simple piano is fine for now). When I introduced the extra divisi voices in stanza 4, I all of a sudden found that the midi was playing only the bass clef notes, not the whole thing (for the whole file, not simply the fourth stanza). I did nothing to the actual midi section, so I'm mystified as to why this has happened -- I don't see the code that has done this. What am I doing wrong? Hi Mats, Thanks for the advice. I tried doing what you advised, consulting also the Manual, and here's what I came up with. It compiles, but it only has the music and no words, and the music is only part of the whole song (the last verse). What did I do wrong? Thanks again for a wonderful programme. Re: How do I fit lyrics?
Thanks, Mats, I'm looking at this briefly on my lunch hour, so I can't experiment with it now, but it looks very clear, and should do the job. I'll let you know tonight when I resume futzing around with it. Thanks again, Blessings, Fr. Gordon Gilbert+ -- Fr. How do I fit lyrics?
Hi list! Can someone tell me where in the manual I can find how to fit lyrics to other voices? What I'm doing is arranging a hymn for Barbershop chorus, and in the last stanza, I want to do a call-and-response thing, changing the rhythm from 3 to 4 (I've managed that part) and using the extra beat to have interaction between the parts, thus: when we've been there \ | ten thousand years ... When we'vebeen there / So while the leads (second voice, same place as alto in SATB) have the regular words associated with their line, the tenors (in soprano place) and baritones and basses (on bass clef) will sing alternate words directly keyed to their line of music. I've seen it done, but I simply can't find how in the manual. Windows XP Pro, LilyPond 2.11.14, jEdit 4.3 pre9 with Lilypond Tool Can someone help? Blessings, Fr. Re: Lilypond Tool
Graham, Thanks for the advice. Yes I did indeed install the latest bleeding-edge version of Lily. Love it!! My compile times are now in the neighbourhood of five to 40 seconds. (I think the longer times are when my machine gets itself bogged down somehow, and I simply reboot.) On other subjects, what does anybody know about jEdit 4.3 pre9 and installation on a FreeBSD machine. I have had trouble with that on my other machine. It stopped because of a program called diablo-caffe which is having issues with my libraries (I think). I *have* written to the recommended people asking their help, but if we can get the word out, maybe somebody on the list has some experience with this, and perhaps some hints. Blessings, Fr. Windows XP Pro, Lilypond 2.11.5, jEdit 4.3 pre-9, Lilypond Tool 2.10.3 Gordon, please do not use an old unstable version like 2.11.5. Please either use the stable version (2.10.x), or use the most current unstable version (currently 2.11.13 or .14). We recently fixed a large number of memory leaks, which could easily cause your file to compile very slowly. Cheers, - Graham -- Fr. Re: Lilypond Tool
Hi folks, I'm a BIG fan of Lilypond Tool now!! I've just installed it in my jEdit on my Windoze machine, and run a few files. The Console which shows you what's happening makes it more like my FreeBSD machine in visibility, and the PDF viewer with click-to-find is super! And the Midi launcher -- great! And looking through the menu items, I'm just beginning to scratch the surface of the possibilities. BUT ... It seems to take an inordinate amount of time to process these files. I'm not working on huge files -- most are songs that fit on one page. But they take (according to the Console window) the best part of five minutes to process. Any ideas on how to streamline this? I've tried un-checking the complex parser, but that doesn't help, and if I click Restart Lilypond Tool, it quits the process with permission denied. And sometime, for no apparent reason, the convert-ly function comes up with Bean-shell error. Dunno why. So any help in making my system as efficient as possible is appreciated. Lily never took so long in the drat--drop method on Windoze, or on my FreeBSD machine. I'd like it to be faster than it is if possible.
