Andy,

The first thing is that Lilypond is not a Windows application like
Word. It is a compiler. It expects to "find" a text file, with
extension .ly and convert this to a music score as a .pdf file. If you
have such a file and drag and drop it on the icon it will be compiled.
However, I would recommend using the excellent (and also free)
Frescobaldi front-end editor---see <http://www.frescobaldi.org/>.

Also, and you'll get this a lot on this group---Read the manual, in
particular and first the Learning manual. I'd also read the Essay as
well, as it gives some background information. Find these, and the
other docs, at <http://lilypond.org/manuals.html>

It sounds like you need a converter program.Perhaps someone with more
knowledge of this can help out.

Is it possible to switch of pagination completely, and rely on manual
breaks? To put this in context, I'm compling a book of folk tunes.
These tend to be 2-4 (very rarely more) lines long. I'd like them in
alphabetical order, but with individual tunes not split over pages,
and wouldn't mind a layout rather more cramped than Lilypond usually
likes. As it is, even with minimal page breaking, I end up shuffling
tunes around to improve the layout

A quick comment.There are two (linked) types of copyright. If you
originate a work - in this context compose some music - you have
copyright control over any production of that work. Once that
copyright has lapsed, a third party can reproduce the work in, for
example, a book. They then get typograpghical copyright: which means,
in effect, that you cannot reproduce the book, but you could reset the
music into a work of your own. For music, there is a further
complication. If someone arranges music, e.g. by adding chords, they
gain a copyright on the arrangement, but not on the original music.
For example, I am produciong a book of tradition British folk tunes
from a music worksshop some years go. The tunes are traditional, and
thus out of copyright, but the chords/arrangements are copyright, and
I had to get permission from the family.

Problems with Lilypond Tool/JEdit

2009-10-10 Thread Mark Austin
Having downloaded 2.13.4 for Windows, and not having used Lilypond for
a few weks, I tried to complie a new tune. In attempting to convert to
the new version, I got this error from Lilypond Tool:

convert-ly.py --edit "C:\Users\Mark Austin\Documents\Marks
Files\Folklore\Mumming Plays\Music\Kempsford-01.ly"
c:\Program Files\LilyPond\usr\bin\python: can't open file 'c:\Program
Files\LilyPond\usr\bin\convert-ly.py': [Errno 2] No such file or
directory

Similarly, when trying gto compile a tune, I get:

LilyPond ready.
%lilypond %args "C:\Users\Mark Austin\Documents\Marks
Files\Folklore\Mumming Plays\Music\Kempsford-01.ly"
ERROR: In procedure primitive-load-path:
ERROR: Unable to find file "ice-9/boot-9.scm" in load path
Processing time:  3  seconds

All the files convert and compile OK under the command line, and files
that used to compile return the same errors.

Have these files moved or something?

Snippets

2009-09-16 Thread Mark Austin
I'm trying to extract some Lilypond snippets to insert into a Word
document, and found a trick in the archives here:

\version "2.13.3"

%{
Austin collection of Mumming Plays
%}

\layout {
clip-regions
= #(list

(make-rhythmic-location 0 0 1)
(make-rhythmic-location 9 4 4)))
}

}
\addlyrics {With a hel met on his head And a sword by his si de
The sol dier mounts his gall ant steed To con quer or to die }
}
\header {
title = "Sidmouth Mummers Play"
composer = "Anon"
}

There are two problems. The first is that this generates two sets of
snippets, one for each line of music. Is there any way to generate a
snippet covering both lines.

The second is that it generates an error, and does not generate the
overall pdf output from the ps file. The error is:

c:/Program
Files/LilyPond/usr/share/lilypond/current/scm/framework-ps.scm:548:62:
In procedure car in expression (car systems):
c:/Program
Files/LilyPond/usr/share/lilypond/current/scm/framework-ps.scm:548:62:

Any idea what's causing it (and how to get rid of it)?

Re: Problems with Piano Staff Template

2009-06-01 Thread Mark Austin
Thanks James. Works a treat now. However, this means the error is in
the template in the Learning Manual, since I copied it straight over.

The first few lines of the first \score block should be:

\score {
  \new PianoStaff = "PianoStaff_pf" <<
\new Staff = "Staff_pfUpper" << \global \upper >>
\new Dynamics = "Dynamics_pf" \dynamics
\new Staff = "Staff_pfLower" <<\global \lower >>
\new Dynamics = "pedal" \pedal

A subsidiary question. What does the second \score block do?

Centered footnotes and spacing

2009-04-26 Thread Mark Austin
I'm putting the finishing touches on a book of English folk tunes, but
have a few problems.

The first is in trying to center a footnote. So far, I've got this:

\paper {
#(define page-breaking ly:minimal-breaking)
ragged-bottom = ##t
oddFooterMarkup = \markup { Engraved on \simple #(strftime "%b %d,
%Y" (localtime (current-time))) with \with-url
#"http://lilypond.org/web/"; { LilyPond \simple #(lilypond-version)
(http://lilypond.org/) } }
oddHeaderMarkup = \markup \fill-line { "The Tunes of John Nourse"
\fromproperty #'page:page-number-string }
evenHeaderMarkup = \markup \fill-line { \fromproperty
#'page:page-number-string "The Tunes of John Nourse" }
}

but would like to have the footnote centered on the page.

Also, I would like to space the individual tunes a bit more apart. I
include them as follows:

\include "32 Bar Jigs/Blackberry Quadrille.ly"
\include "32 Bar Jigs/Blackthorn Stick.ly"
\include "32 Bar Jigs/Captain Lemos Quick March.ly"
\pageBreak

but would like a line or so separation.

Conditional breaks

2008-08-14 Thread Mark Austin
Is there any way of including a conditional page break?

What I want it for is in collections of Folk Music. These are short
pieces, typically 32 bars, and generally 2-4 lines of music. What I
don't want is to split a piece of music over two pages; and it's
getting tedious compiling Lilypond; checking the pdf, adding a break
as appropriate and repeatng ad nauseum. What I'd like to be able to do
is mark a tune so as to add a page break before it if the piece does
not fit on the current page.
