Re: [LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Committee candidates

2022-03-22 Thread Kim Rajdev

Thank you Debra and others for reaching out and expressing concern about the
statements made during the candidate forum, and for sharing your experiences.
Discussing with parents and other community members who have concerns about the
direction of the school district or my own views is something I am invested in
doing if elected, and believe is critical to ensure that I am making decisions
in an informed manner. I also fully appreciate that I do not have experience
as an educator, and rely on guidance from experts such as Superintendent Becky
McFall and Assistant Superintendent Jess Rose, as well as input from parents
and the broader community about the priorities the schools should be focusing
on.

I'll start by saying that I felt some of the paraphrasing in the Squirrel
caused a few points to get lost in translation, which is understandable given
this is a complex topic that is hard to simplify into a few sentences. I
appreciate the chance to provide some clarification. I do think that content
is an important part of education. Clearly there are many foundational skills
needed to be well-positioned for a variety of career paths, and finding our
niche often happens when curiosity is sparked in a particular subject. What
excited me from watching the District's presentation about the Deeper Learning
framework is how this framework challenges school-age children to apply content
to real world scenarios, with the goal of both mastering that content, and
building transferable skills that are also critical to a successful career,
such as teamwork, creativity, adaptability, etc. As Jess Rose stated in her
presentation, by giving preK-8 children the opportunity to practice the "whole
game" at a junior level, not only do they learn more than by just practicing
skills and drills, they are often more engaged in what they learn. So while I
do think learning content is a key component of education, I shy away from
learning that focuses on rote memorization of content in favor of an approach
that encourages more critical thinking and application to broader scenarios.

I would echo John’s point about feedback from teachers being limited the past
two years. While I want to be sensitive to the challenges the teachers have
dealt with during Covid, the communication gap is something I have heard from
other parents as well and I would like to address moving forward. Our community
is an immense resource and we need active parent involvement to make our
schools the best they can be.

Finally, in regards to small group learning that is based on ability vs. mixed
levels, I agree that there are benefits and drawbacks to both approaches, and
there probably isn't one approach that fits all grade levels perfectly. Keeping
our kids engaged is extremely important. We also have to challenge ourselves
to ask what is the key goal of these group learnings? Perhaps it is getting to
the highest level of math achievement for each group, or perhaps it is
providing the experience of working across a variety of skill sets to achieve a
goal. If there are racial and socio-economic divisions that are exacerbated by
homogenous grouping, then we have a larger reason to support a path that helps
break down these barriers. I don't know the answers to all these questions, but
I think the current administration has some great ideas and I look forward to
challenging myself in putting thoughtful consideration to these issues if I'm
elected.

Best,
Kim

[LincolnTalk] Are Jonathan Dwyer and Joseph Dwyer related?

2022-03-22 Thread jonat...@caswelldwyer.com
Hello,
I am Jonathan Dwyer. You may know my name from my service on the Select Board
the last five years, but you are probably more familiar with my wife Carolyn, a
fourth grade teacher in the Lincoln Public Schools.

Over the past few weeks, students and parents have been asking Carolyn if I am
related to Joseph Dwyer, who is running for School Committee. While we have the
same surname and live in the same small town, we are not related.

Thank you for being interested in Lincoln’s governance. Carolyn, Lucy, and I
look forward to seeing you Saturday at Town Meeting.

Regards,
Jonathan

Oo, that is an interesting subtlety. I just went to niche.com and then
used the search bar to navigate to Lincoln MA, and since I saw the pin in
the map where the Lincoln school is, I figured that was the correct page.
It was not readily apparent that there's a different page that captures
both Lincoln & Hanscom together.

FYI all, when I go to niche.com and look at Lincoln, MA public schools, I
see that they give us an* A- *overall.

Academics: *A*

I can't speak to whether "niche.com" is a good source for judging the

I asked about clean up but neither the Town of Lincoln or City of Cambridge

The area in question along Old county is very overgrown with poison

Other roads in Lincoln are similarly affected for these or

roads deserve more effort by the town with more frequent street

I'm sorry to hear that the plague has spread to our town as

[LincolnTalk] Seeking 1953 and 1962 8th grade yearbooks

The Lincoln Town Archives is fortunate to have an almost-complete
collection of the 8th grade yearbooks from 1947 on -- but we are missing
1953 and 1962. If you have one of those among your personal archives, and
would be willing to donate it to fill in the gap, we (and generations to
come) would be forever grateful!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Town land along Old County Rd

2022-03-22 Thread Andy Wang
According to the nifty Lincoln GIS (https://www.axisgis.com/LincolnMA/),
the land adjacent to the reservoir along Old County Road it's owned by the
City of Cambridge, not the Town of Lincoln. So I'm not even sure DPW can
go clean it up, that would be trespassing...

As I said before, contact the Selects and ask to have a discussion.
Otherwise, you can start a citizen’s petition to request a position be funded
in the DPW budget.
There is a way to see if others also agree that our tax dollars should pay for
this, otherwise, we can go out with trash bags and each do a little bit in our
neighborhoods.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Town land along Old County Rd

2022-03-22 Thread betty green via Lincoln
I live on Old County Rd not far far from Carol.   Clearly there are streets in
Lincoln that are more affected than others by littering.    Old County is one
of them as we are close to a reservoir and major business center and the road
provides a major thoroughfare with low lighting/visibility for cars.
Other roads in Lincoln are similarly affected for these or different reasons
and the town is probably aware of them.   These roads deserve more effort by
the town with more frequent street cleaning.  Perhaps this is already happening
but does not seem enough.

do they just lease the land/water area?

Re: [LincolnTalk] Lincoln School Committee candidates

2022-03-22 Thread john gregg via Lincoln
As a parent who has a child in the Lincoln Public School system I have had to
utilize outside resources to make sure that my child can be proficient in
subjects: Math, Science and Reading Comprehension Skills. Two teachers with
whom have pushed my child in school have been Mr Trant last year and Ms Price
this year, otherwise the feedback I get is that he is not pushed enough in his
subjects. For me it is a process of going away from critical thinking and
focused on giving kids the tools to reach and exceed their goals instead of
just meeting the standards.
Both of these candidates make valid points and should be evaluated for the
content they bring to the attention of the community. We should be asking our
school to challenge our kids in all aspects of life and specifically their
education, and if that means listening to others who bring potential solutions
to an obvious problem they should be listened to and not dismissed. I know for
example I have not had one feedback session with any teacher in two years, I
have had to reach out to ask the questions. We need more parents involved in
our kids education to make sure we are not just meeting the standards but
exceeding expectations to prepare our children for High School and College,
THIS IS THE FOUNDATION.
Critical thinking is a core requirement to be successful, it allows us to take
in all the information and make critical decisions. If our kids are not meeting
general requirements then we should be asking why and I am glad to have School
Committee candidates who are willing to ask tough questions and step out of the
box and make people a little uncomfortable so we can have honest and open
conversations about our children who will not be so protected when they enter
into LSHS. We need to stop lecturing others and start listening to all concerns
especially when it comes to the education of our children and their success
when they transfer into LSHS. I welcome the conversation and think it is a long
time coming for this community.

This is very well expressed. There is some material that people need to know,
not obscure material but math facts and basic English skills and how many
inches in a foot and feet in a yard, etc.

I remember grocery shopping with my mother when I was a child before electronic
cash registers. The bill was $13.27. My mother gave the cashier $15.02 and the
clerk had no clue how to compute the change ($1.75). There is not always a
computer or calculator. Some things should be known.

Re: [LincolnTalk] LINCOLN…We Have a Problem ! (not my personal experience)

2022-03-22 Thread Bryce Wells via Lincoln
Jay,

I find it concerning that you are prescribing a solution to a (perceived)
problem without any background or experience as an educator. I find it
galling that you are using Niche.com as your primary source for the
problem, but that's another issue for another time. My recommendation is
that you at least start with the state-mandate proficiency exams and the
school's performance therein... btw, I have no idea where LPS ranks.

More homework? Oh brother. Have you vetted or discussed this
multi-pronged plan with Becky McFall or Sharon Hobbs? You might want to
start there and see WHAT shortfalls they think there MIGHT be and how THEY
think they should be solved. That sort of approach will surely get my
attention... and vote.

Without getting into personal specifics (because as Lincoln Talk's eristic
pundit Dennis Liu would remind me, the plural of anecdote is NOT data),
both my boys went through LPS and are thriving at LS. They were well
prepared for high school. Many of their friends are thriving. Is there
room for improvement? Always.

Also, personally speaking, they had many friends who went to Fenn or other
private schools. The parents I spoke to about that decision (a deeply
personal one) communicated that they wanted their child in a same-sex
learning environment or they valued the private education experience or
they wanted to provide more avenues for their child outside of LS.

Thanks for listening.

Bryce

[LincolnTalk] LINCOLN…We Have a Problem !

2022-03-22 Thread JAY DWYER
Why ?

Here are the numbers for K-8 Lincoln Schools from : niche.com

59% proficient in math
61% proficient in english

What grade do you get with 61% on a report card?

You get an F for failure.

We spent $13 million a year for our schools and this is what we get.

People with the ability to pay $40,000 a year take their kids out of Lincoln
schools and put them in private schools like Fenn.
You know many families that have done this.

We are not traditionally rigorous in teaching. One pair and told me she “liked
that her son was not pushed too hard in school”

This is a poor foundation which is a recipe for failure in future grades and in
life.

I have a solution they will not cost any money.

1) Written homework every night that is graded and handed back the next morning
with a traditional % grade.

2) The final exam every week on what you learned that week.

3) A report card every Monday morning with average scores of Homeworks and
grade on the final exam with a rank in class.

I experience this program for three years in 6/7 and eighth grade. I went
through Central Catholic high school in Lawrence it was easy. I graduated with
a degree in economics from Georgetown university and felt 100% confident that I
could learn anything.

If these ideas makes sense to you I ask for your vote on March 28 for Lincoln
school committee.

Join the Conservation Law Foundation and friends in visualizing the future of
clean energy happening right now in our work, in your town, and even in your
kitchen!

As we watched gas and electricity prices increase this season, we also saw
their suppliers cry that the solution to our supposed energy shortage is more
fossil fuel infrastructure - more disruptive fracking, more fragile and
explosive pipelines slithering underneath our homes, and more toxic fumes that
pollute our air. But we know that fossil fuels cause indiscriminate damage to
our climate. That polluting emissions warm our world, corrupt our air, and
bring extreme weather to our communities.

A great opportunity for our community to learn more about electrification as a

2022-03-22 Thread Paul Shorb
The Lincoln Green Energy Committee asks everyone to vote for the motion
under Article 31 at Town Meeting. Anyone interested in learning more about
it can access a list of resources at the following link (as well as through
LincolnGreenenergy.org):
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1malKvvV2TtMKDTENND_Iu3hj_mJkBup6/edit#

You can find there, among other things, (1) the text of the motion that
will be proposed; (2) the slide deck used for two webinars we presented
last week; (3) a short slide deck summarizing the evidence that
all-electric homes tend to be LESS expensive to build and operate than if
using traditional gas-fired systems; and (4) other information about the
rationale for the motion, including the urgency of the climate crisis and
how what we do in little old Lincoln can have a positive impact on
statewide policy.

Hope to see you at Town Meeting!

Hello LincolnTalk

In the middle of a large scale landscaping job (expanding flat yard, retaining
walls, removing trees, Hardscape, etc) I found I didn’t have enough stone for
my patio and my landscaper is so fast, we are at a standstill. Therefore,
instead of the usual 2 month wait, he has time right now for anyone who needs
masonry or landscaping services. His patios are a thing of a beauty.
His name is Nuno Arruda of NPA Masonry. His cell is +1 (617) 460-6892. His
email is cc’d.

[LincolnTalk] Kim Rajdev for Lincoln School Committee Endorsement

2022-03-22 Thread Travis Roland
*KIM RAJDEV FOR LINCOLN SCHOOL COMMITTEE*

We write to endorse *Kim Rajdev *for election to the Lincoln School
Committee.

Since moving to Lincoln five years ago with her husband and two young girls
(now entering 3rd grade and Kindergarten), Kim has taken an active role in
supporting the Lincoln schools. She has volunteered as a room parent in k-4
and served as a legal advisor to Lincoln Nursery School as part of the
parent co-operative. Consequently, she is familiar with the challenges and
issues of the Lincoln School system.

We believe that it is valuable to have Kim, an engaged parent who has the
interest, experience, and her professional background, to contribute to the
governance of Lincoln's schools. As an engineer and lawyer, she will bring
both analytical and consensus-building skills to complement those of other
members of the committee.

Kim’s open, respectful style invites dialogue on important issues such as
the implementation of LPS Anti-Racism, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity (AIDE)
policy. She is clearly focused on enabling a school environment that
encourages curiosity and high academic engagement along with a welcoming
and inclusive approach to student life. As part of the Lincoln School
Committee, she will be attentive to these opportunities and challenges.

Town elections are Monday, March 28 at the Reed gym. Please join us in
voting for *Kim Rajdev *for a position on the *Lincoln School Committee.*

[LincolnTalk] Horse boarding - need recommendations

2022-03-22 Thread Delaine Reiter
Hello Lincoln Talkers,

I'm seeking recommendations for a family that is contemplating moving from
Ohio to the Nashua, NH, area. They are interested in finding great horse
boarding facilities & trainers located somewhere between Lincoln and
Manchester, NH.

The mom of the family is also interested in the "discipline of eventing"
(whatever that is :) ), and I will gladly pass along any information /
replies.

Thanks,
Delaine Reiter
