[LincolnTalk] Maury Eldridge

2022-05-25 Thread Annamaria San Antonio
Hello neighbors,

Some of you in town might know fellow Lincolnites, Maury Eldridge, and his
wife Dale, and may be aware of the sad and tragic passing of Maury this
past weekend. It's important to acknowledge the passing of our dear
community members to honor them and their lives and with that in mind, I
post this news.

I knew Maury only as a fellow singer in the Mystic Chorale but even while I
did not know him well, his special, gentle, yet powerful nature touched me,
as he did so many people.

He played a pivotal role in the Mystic Chorale community, and click on this
link below if you'd like to see how we are commemorating his life and
holding him in love and light as we say our farewells to our friend, and
wonderful, talented, loving man.
https://mysticchorale.org/maury-eldridge/

It is too ironic how he was to sing a solo on one of our songs this season,
The Parting Glass, a Scottish traditional song, and my last image of him
was on the stage in last week's rehearsal singing it in his deep baritone.

2020 was the First Taps Across America Memorial Day Event, started by Steve
Hartman of CBS "On the Road".
The program requests 1 minute of silence at 3pm, to be followed by the playing
of taps.  Last Year they had at least 10,000 Registered Participants, and many
more not formally registered. If anyone would like to participate this year -
here is the link.  (Which includes a nice video of pictures that were submitted
last year - all ages, all kinds of instruments.)  The music is on the website.

Automatic weapons are basically banned so that would be very far fetched.
They cost thousands, you need a federal stamp to own one.

But yes according to Margit and the rules of LT this type of discussion
does not belong here. She has made this very clear several times

And to add to that this type of discussion would not be welcome on the FB
discussion group either. Unless it specifically dealt with Lincoln schools.

[LincolnTalk] How to support our children

2022-05-25 Thread Susan Taylor
from the Superintendent of Lincoln Public Schools:

This morning we are grieving the loss of so many innocent lives due to the
shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Each time an event like this occurs, especially in
a school, it leads me to reflect upon our practices and protocols and the ways
that we provide support to students on a daily basis. We know that the best
way to deter violence from occurring within our schools and communities is to
ensure that all of our students feel connected to their school, have trusted
adults that they can go to, and that we help them develop the skills and coping
strategies needed to get through difficult times.

We are fortunate to have a skilled cadre of social workers and school
psychologists in our schools who work alongside our classroom teachers and
administrators to support students on a daily basis. The best response to these
events is to double down on preventative steps of building strong
student-to-student and student-to-staff connections and to teach our children
social emotional strategies that help them understand themselves and cope with
the effects of stress, anxiety, depression, and feelings of anger or
frustration, etc. Building strong, positive district, school, and classroom
cultures is essential in helping to prevent these horrific events from
occurring in our schools.

I am providing several links below for resources on how to talk with children
about violence. It is essential that our students’ families partner with us by
supporting their children at home. Please take some time to review the
resources to assist you in having developmentally appropriate conversations
with your children.

Our hearts are with Robb Elementary’s educators, students, and families, as
well as the entire Uvalde community during this time. Please be gentle with
yourselves during this difficult time.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Original Intent

2022-05-25 Thread Seth Rosen
It seems to me this string is a national political debate and not a
Lincoln-specific topic.

A town message forum focused on hyper-local issues does not seem like the right
place for this type of back and forth.

Hopefully this thread can end and this discussion can be shifted elsewhere.
Plenty of places for this, but this doesn’t seem like the right one to me…

Excuse me-hope and prayers have gotten us nowhere!
The bloodshed continues.

Of course we are distraught and pray that we can move BEYOND hope and prayers
to action that might, just might have a chance of stopping the bloodshed.

I can balance sorrow and rage at the same time.

Apparently at least one reader misunderstood my comments.
They were cynical predictions of the anticipated responses from the entities
named, not my advocacy of anything!

And, in fact, within the last hour, those are exactly the responses from both
the GOP and the NRA.

My own advocacy would be for sweeping reform-banning assault weapons, banning
high-capacity magazines, comprehensive background checks with a long waiting
period, etc.etc.
A girl can dream.

Alice - at the risk of opening up a Lincoln Talk can of worms, can I just put
in a plea to not encourage the use of roundup or any other systemic weed
killer. Herbicides are carcinogens and are toxic to amphibians and fish. There
is a reason it is now banned in France - not a country always at the helm of
environmental activism, but in this case, I believe they have done the right
thing. We can be all too casual with our relationship to herbicides, pesticides
and fungicides. Please research before using, and thanks for listening. Robin

Re: [LincolnTalk] Original Intent

2022-05-25 Thread Linda McMillan
I totally agree. The Republican Senators should be ashamed. They have been
stonewalling gun reform legislation because they are beholden to the gun lobby.
Power and money is what they are about. This week, the Governor of Texas (Greg
Abbot), Ted Cruz, and Trump will be speaking at the National Rifle Association
annual conference. How do they get up in the morning and face their conscience.
Will they edit their planned remarks I wonder?

Another option: buy some Ortho or Roundup weed killer. No sprayer needed;
it comes with a battery-powered wand.

[LincolnTalk] Letter to the Community

2022-05-25 Thread Elder, Peggy
To the Community:

We have recently become aware of an issue with several residents failing to
receive their second half 2022 real estate tax bill. We know Lincoln residents
are diligent and timely taxpayers, and so when an unprecedented number of
residents notified us via phone calls and emails, we began researching the
matter. We were able to determine that 191 residents did not receive an
original fiscal year 2022 second half real estate tax bill.

We are taking steps to notify the affected residents and intend to waive all
demand fees and interest charges accrued to date for these specific accounts.

Please be assured that this issue was not a result of a failure in our
software, however we have put additional checks and balances in place to reduce
the risk of this occurring in the future.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused, and truly
appreciate your patience and understanding.

Sincerely,

Charlene and Bill do exactly this sort of work for us. However, we have found
that getting anyone to do yardwork of any sort, even at $25 an hour, is pretty

[LincolnTalk] Free: Tully Lake camp site available for tonight & tomorrow night

2022-05-25 Thread sara levine

Hi Neighbors:

Crazy last minute offer here:

Would anyone make use of a very beautiful campsite for tonight and Thursday
night?

We had a reservation at Tully Lake in Royalston Ma, ( about 1 hr and 20 mins
from Lincoln). but now, can’t use it. We are happy for someone else to enjoy
it as a gift.

It’s a very special spot!

An easy walk-in site over a small footbridge, surrounded by lovely woods and
miles of hiking trails, a couple of sweet waterfalls.
Perfect basecamp to canoe or swim, or just hang in your hammock and watch
clouds float by.

https://thetrustees.org/place/tully-lake-campground/

Spontaneous camping retreat anyone?

*Masks now optional in the Lincoln Public Library*

The Lincoln Board of Health (BOH) voted to rescind the town-wide indoor
mask mandate effective Monday, March 14, 2022, in response to substantially
improved and positively trending public health data, including Lincoln’s
high vaccination rate.

Residents with weakened immune systems or at increased risk of severe
Covid-19 disease because of age or medical conditions, or who have a
household member at such increased risk, are advised by the Lincoln BOH and
the Commonwealth’s Department of Public Health (DPH) to continue to wear a
mask when indoors other than in their home, even if they are vaccinated.

We encourage the public to continue to wear masks in accordance with their
own comfort level and in compliance with the DPH guidelines cited above.
Private establishments may continue to *require masks upon entry.*

*Updated indoor mask use recommendation as of April 14, 2022*: “Due to
recent data showing an increase in positive COVID-19 cases, the Board of
Health members voted last night to strongly recommend that people wear
masks in public indoor spaces until early May as we see how the infection
rate from the new BA-2 variant evolves over the next few weeks after spring
vacation.”

[LincolnTalk] ISO: Looking for Recommendations for Insurance Agent

2022-05-25 Thread Louis Zipes
Interesting. I have always been happy with Marie Perlatonda at WTP.
Admittedly I haven't had to make a claim but anytime I have had a question
or changes to my policies she has been responsive.

Not sure if you can switch agents or not within an agency.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Ant holes

2022-05-25 Thread Sara Lupkas
I would leave them - these don't look like carpenter ants or other species
that are harmful. Most ant species support a healthy ecosystem. Among other
things, they aerate the soil — digging tunnels that carry water, oxygen, and
nutrients to plant roots. And they also speed the decomposition of organic
material, such as leaves and dead insects, thereby fertilizing plants. If you
ever decide to plant that area of your garden, the soil will probably be
improved by their activity.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Lincoln population counts-our HAFB neighbors

2022-05-25 Thread Sara Mattes
All,
Historically, HAFB residents have been included as part of our community as
best we can.
We administer their schools, and, before 9/11, our kids met on playing fields
both on the Lincoln campus and on Base.
HAFB parents were invited to our events, and HAFB residents were invited to ALL
town/community events.
And, in turn, we attended events on Base.
HAFB personnel were often the guest speakers at our Memorial Day events.

9/11 security measures made the easy movement between these 2 communities
rather difficult.
Most travel between locations was limited to official business.
As the Select representative to the Base, and the representative from HATS to
the BRAC/Build the Base campaign, I had clearance and spent a lot of time on
Base.
Even with my position, it was difficult and Security often had me waiting at
the Sartain (Vandenberg) gate to receive additional clearance to enter.

While informal social movement was curtailed in one direction, Base residents
have continued to come to Lincoln programs and events.
However, the security reality of the 21st century creates barriers to a more
open and organic relationship.

[LincolnTalk] Lincoln population counts

2022-05-25 Thread Rachel Drew
Allen's figures do include HAFB. Putting aside the important question of
why/whether we should consider residents there members of our community
(!!), the numbers for Lincoln excluding HAFB are not so easy to come by -
the Census Bureau changes how it draws various administrative geographies
with each Decennial Census, so there is no consistency across decades in
how it defines sub-town areas (for those facile with online mapping,
the Census'
TigerWeb program allows you
to see how these lines change over time).

That said, the best approximation I could do came up with the following:

2010: 5,076 (using 2010 Census tract 3602)
2020: 5,565 (using block groups 1-4 of 2020 Census tract 3603)
delta: 489, or +9.6%

Rachel Drew (who studies housing markets professionally and knows a thing
or two about Census data).
