[LincolnTalk] FREE: 2 tix for Chris Gethard, 10pm, Sat Jun 18

2022-06-13 Thread Rachel Marie Schachter
Hey, Lincoln!

I have two tickets for *Chris Gethard at the Sinclair this Saturday the
18th at 10pm *and can't go, so they're up for grabs!

Geth is one of my favorite comedians, and if you don't know him as a
comedian, you might know him from bit roles in shows like Parks & Rec and
Space Force OR from his podcast Beautiful/Anonymous OR from the movie Don't
Think Twice. His comedy special Career Suicide (on HBO Max) also rips my
heart out every time.

The order total was $61.24 in case anyone goes "No, I should really
pay you" but I honestly just want someone to go. I think he's the best.

Let me know if you're interested!

[LincolnTalk] Looking for volunteer tutor/mentor for Iraqi 13 year old boy

2022-06-13 Thread Jane Appell
I have been working with an Iraqi family for 2 years in conjunction with LexRAP
(Lexington Refugee Assistance Program). This is a lovely family with 4 kids who
are currently living in affordable housing in Concord. I am seeking a volunteer
who might be interested in mentoring and tutoring a thirteen year-old boy this
summer and perhaps into next school year. This is a really nice kid and the
family is lovely. This young man is fluent in English but had very poor
schooling in his early academic career. He has considerable learning
disabilities that are interfering with his ability to focus and inhibiting
development of basic reading and studying skills. He has been thoroughly
evaluated, will be attending summer school, and is now on an educational plan.
He is eager to learn but his lack of confidence gets in the way of applying
himself.

If you are interested, please get in touch with me, and we can discuss further.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Bob Lemire

2022-06-13 Thread Bob Kupperstein
I work at Lexia Learning (now part of Cambium Learning Group) and read
Bob's book about the founding/early days when I first started at the
company.

The roots of the Lexia are a classic 'Lincoln' story. The story goes that
once he decided that he needed to find a way to help his son learn to read,
he discussed ideas on his train commute with friends/colleagues who worked
in tech, business, finance, education, psychology, etc. That mind-meld led
to initial product ideas taking advantage of early technology and the
know-how to get a startup off the ground. What followed was a huge EdTech
success story, not only in terms of business, but more importantly for the
impact on early reading skills.

With the pandemic and the need for schools to find online learning
resources, the number of students and schools using Lexia reading and
english-learning products has just exploded, to more than 20,000 schools
and over 5.5 million students.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Bob Lemire

2022-06-13 Thread Sara Mattes
I had recently shared an article from a 1984 land use conference publication.
Bob Lemire was a critical participant and authored a piece on Lincoln’s land
conservation and planning efforts and the formation of the Rural Land
Foundation.
He understood how to build a partnership between the public and private sector
to achieve community goals.
It was innovative then, and still is today.

I have a copy of the article, if any are interested.
The title of the publication, still available, is:

Thank you, Bob.

Re: [LincolnTalk] trash

2022-06-13 Thread Anne Warner
Marit - one of the great joys of living in Lincoln is that we have a trash and
recycling center(or “dump”) which is open from 7:30 to 3:30 Wednesdays and
Saturdays. There are separate receptacles for glass, trash, plastic/paper, and
an area for kitchen waste (to be composted). There is also a “swap shed” where
people bring household items that they don’t want any more, and anyone can take
them home for free. You need a sticker on your car that identifies you as a
Lincoln resident to use the dump. In many ways, it is part of the heart of the
community, and a large percent of our citizens use it rather than a private
service. It’s also a great place to meet people!

[LincolnTalk] Bob Lemire

2022-06-13 Thread MARY ROSENFELD
Bob Lemire - conservation giant...

Bob Lemire had a vision for Lincoln's conservation and rural character back in
the fifties and acted on it. At the time state monies suddenly became
available to buy land for conservation. Lincoln was an agricultural town at
the time and land values were reasonable. Bob acted quickly. He went to his
fellow citizens who had larger tracts of land and asked if they would give or
sell part of all of their land to conservation - often with the proviso they
could still farm their land.
>From his efforts a large amount of land was conserved in Lincoln - a major
>factor in the beauty, ecology, and rural character of Lincoln today.
He wrote about this in his book "Creative Land Development" - still a major
resource for saving land, while balancing it with the needs of the landowners.
Now there are many pressures on Lincoln's lands. Let's remember what Bob and
his fellow citizens originally did to conserve Lincoln's natural lands - and
what an amazing legacy that is to continue to preserve today.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Many thanks- all set with car seats...and an idea for all you folks out there in (temporary) need of baby and child gear.

2022-06-13 Thread Sara Mattes
My thought was to simply inventory what each of us had, keeping it at our homes.
Then, share inventory lists so we could contact directly.
It may be too complicated, but it is reassuring to know that each time I have
reached out, there has been some generous souls who has popped up with an offer.
Many offers acme form folks whose kids have outgrown things and they are
looking to clear space.
It would be nice to know there was a permanent supply here in town.

30+% of us are over 60, and many have grandkids who visit.
Having new families recycling our way is fantastic.

Great idea for Granny’s Closet for baby/ child supplies.
Once a new Senior Center is built that could be included - as the medical
supplies are currently included at Bemis. But that is years away.
For now???

[LincolnTalk] cataracts

2022-06-13 Thread kliattaudi--- via Lincoln
Thank you to all who responded to my request for recommendations for docs who
do cataract surgery.  Always careful about med care these days, I sought a
second opinion. Recommended I  update my glasses and wait a year to see how
that works.  The second opinion did not see the need for immediate surgery;
detailed tests and explanation why.  I'm relieved.  Also I may be back in a
year for new recommendations on lincolntalk.  Or not.  Again thank you all for
recommending.  Most kind.  Jean Palmer--
