[LincolnTalk] Fwd: Sad Announcement

2024-07-20 Thread Sara Mattes
When we built our home here in 1978, our “landscaping” budget went down a
hole…into a well that was budgeted for 125’ and turned out to be 550'.

It was very discouraging, but a trip to Weston Nurseries lifted the spirits.
Their amazing staff helped us map out an affordable plan for incremental
additions as we could afford them-hardy plants that were suitable to our
climate and budget.
They also clued us into the pallet sales held in the fall-a gold mine of
affordable plants that were left over from the previous season.

All the plants survived and thrived.
The genius of Wayne Mezitt and his hardy hybrids dominate our property.
The most magnificent are the 3 towering sugar maples, now 45 years old and
producing wonderful ample sap for the Flints to convert to syrup, are a
testimony to Mezitt’s horticultural wizardry..

Thank you, Mr. Mezitt-your legacy graces us and continues here in Lincoln at
your newest outpost.

Thoughts to your friends and family at this sad, sad time

Re: [LincolnTalk] 'Tick Bomb': What To Know In MA About Species Behind Meat Allergies

2024-07-12 Thread Sara Mattes
I suggested testing after a tick bite.

As the article notes, this syndrome is becoming more common as the tick that
carries it is becoming more common.
And, the syndrome was only identified a few years ago.
MA docs are not very familiar with it, but are getting more so.
It is a specialty area for allergists, who are now educating colleagues about
the growing occurances.

If one develops alpha-gal, you will not know until you are hit with some pretty
nasty, and even life-threatening symptoms.
If you test positive, you simply avoid ALL red meat products, including gelatin
that hides in may places, including medications.
The alpha gal can dissipate, over time, and you can return to eating meat.
But, the only safe way to know is to test every 6-12 months.

Of course, if you are vegetarian, or vegan, or never eat “red” meat, you can
forgo any of the above.

I have had bouts over the course of 15 years and never knew what it was until
recently.
I say “bouts” as they were intermittent.
It does not happen every time you eat red meat, and the symptoms are delayed
onset.
You can eat dinner, go to bed, and be woken up with some very scary and painful
symptoms, as I have.
I did learn, early on, to be sensitive to the symptoms and to pound children’s
Benadryl as soon as symptoms started, even though had no idea what was causing
them.
But they are VERY scary.

It was only a few years ago that it became known that the cause of these
symptoms was triggered by a tick bite.
I never go anywhere without an Epic Pen and lots of Benadryl, just in case.

If anyone has had tick bites and managed not to get any of the tick borne
diseases, cunt your self lucky!

Just be forewarned.

[LincolnTalk] 'Tick Bomb': What To Know In MA About Species Behind Meat Allergies

2024-07-12 Thread Sara Mattes
ALPHA-GAL is serious business.
Given that symptom onset is delayed and often happens at night, it is hard to
connect to the tick bite.
Many MDs are still unaware of this tock-born problem.
A simple blood test is now available to test.
If you know you have been bitten, it is worth asking for the test.

If you ever experience and serious itching, hives, swelling of tongue & lips,
and there is no know trigger, get the test.
These symptoms often respond top Benadryl.
Children’s chewable are faster acting than the adult pills, and you can add to
dosage as you note a lack of complete response.

As notes in the article, the incidence of this is on the rise.
Climate change has been a facilitating factor.

Be aware, at best, alpha-gal it is extremely uncomfortable, at worst, it is
life-threatening.

While the overall tick population has been on the dramatic rise in
Massachusetts in recent years, there is one species that hunts in packs.

Re: [LincolnTalk] seeking advice on invisible electric fences for dogs

2024-07-12 Thread Sara Mattes
The success of an electric fence is less in the quality and exterior the
company, but in the temperament of the dog , and also training .
Some breeds and temperaments just barrel right through them when temped by a
squirrel or some such trigger.
Then, the trigger leaves and the dog won’t/ can’t cross back in.
I have an easy going Springer and have 1.5 acres fenced electric- never an
issue… as long as the line is in tact.
I would consult with Megan Lytton , dog trainer par excellent, located at the
mall. She can best guide you.

Good luck… and lucky you to have them moving here!

Within Freedom’s Way we, and our many partners, are deep into exploring and planning for the 250th to share new perspectives on the impact of that event on the region. To serve as a platform for that exploration, we invite you to peruse Freedom’s Way 250 which features our multi-year initiative, Revolutionary Stories and resources to help plan for the coming year. Her research interests include the study of racialization and labor within enslaved and free Black people within the Northeast.

As an intern, she will continue historical research on Case Whitney, a formerly enslaved man who labored at The Wayside in Concord, Massachusetts. Kristen will aid in reinterpreting archaeological collections from the Casey House Site, featured throughout Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area and Minute Man National Historical Park media.

Interpretative goals will be centered around understanding the lives of enslaved and free Black people within Concord. As we continue this research, we are excited to share new narratives exploring Black histories in New England.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Hanscom DEIR is inadequate

2024-06-26 Thread Sara Mattes
I will share reports from the Bedford Citizen as they become available.
(Or, you can easily subscribe yourself).
The reporter on this issue is Mike Rosenberg.
He is a seasoned journalist-onetime Editor of the Concord Journal, who hired
Susan Fargo to be Editor of the Lincoln Journal-those were the days.

He is former Bedford Selectmen who served along side of me on HATS and HFAC.

We dealt with DEIR’s of yore, and other tangles with Massport, as we worked to
support the Air Force Base from potential closure.
So, Mikes coverage is incredibly well-informed on all aspects and tricky,
sticky wickets.

And while this delay won’t necessarily stop the project, it puts more sticks in
the spokes of the wheel.
It will allow for more pressure from both sides to build.
And, the Massport Board is a creature of the Gov.

The designation of the area and especially. MMNHP as “Endangered” by the Natal
Trust put a spotlight on this…and, I am sure, caused great discomfort…as it
should!

The continued note that this project goes against all the climate goals the Gov
professes to advance is another critical pressure point.

.

Stay tuned….

Re: [LincolnTalk] Changes to Town Water?

2024-06-26 Thread Sara Mattes
We have a well
The water tasted great and was always clear.
But, It was incredibly hard.
So, we have a whole house backwash filtration system for that, a neutralizer +
RO for drinking, cooking and frog.
The RO addresses most impurities, taste and also those nasty plastic
particulates.

You might just go for RO.
There are a variety of ways to install it, and varying costs, so do some
research.
We have used Friot for over a decade.
The RO system is our newest addition, and we couldn’t be happier.

Best,
Sara

Re: [LincolnTalk] Historic Boston tours

2024-06-16 Thread Sara Mattes
I am not sure there is much in the way of decent bus tours.
Duck Tours are fun, but incredibly historically inaccurate.
The Freedom Trail NPS tours are good, but involve walking on hills.
If you select certain sites, you can mitigate walking-African Meeting House,
the BPL (fabulous, undiscovered gem), Old Norht Church and Paul Revere House
all offer good and accurate tours, with fascinating glimpse into specific
periods.

Consider Concord and the walking tours out of the Visitors Center + Robbins
House.
https://robbinshouse.org/Plus the Concord Museum, the Old Manse, Old North
Bridge, Emerson House and Orchard (Alcott) House…all tell great stores and
don’t involve much walking.

In Lincoln, don’t miss Codman and Gropius House and, of course, the MMNHP
Visitors Center.

Lots to do and see!

We are an embarrassment of riches.

2024-06-04 Thread Sara Mattes
In 2012, we joined the town program to go solar.
We signed a 20 year lease with Astrum Solar.
The sold the SRECs and we paid a much lower amount, up front for the 44 panels.

A number of years ago, we contacted them to remove a portion of the panels so
that we could reroof a portion of the house.
While they were slow to put the panel back up, in the end, they did.
They system has been great and keeping our bills to almost zero.

All was well, until it wasn’t.
Now, some of the panels are not functioning as they should - might be the
squirrels that nested under a portion…not only did they maybe do something to
the panels, the nest material comes down and is a mess. At least we now know
what at the sound of little feet all over our roof was!)

We now need to have panels removed to do repairs, and Astrum is no more…have
been bought out by who knows.
When we contacted what had been Astrum, they sent us to an email that keeps
bouncing, and a phone number that does not ring-Kilowatt Systems.

Does anyone out there know anything about Kilowatt Systems?

Is there anyone else who signed up with the town program and Astrum who knows
who now owns our panels and is collecting $$ for the SRECS?

According to our lease, we cannot remove panels or have any repair work done
without permission of the Lessor, whom ever that might be?

All you green tech folks, any ideas where to turn?

Oy….

Sara & Jerry

[LincolnTalk] All creatures, great and small

2024-05-15 Thread Sara Mattes
Our newly arrived resident -that you black bear- is part of the urban/wildlife
interface.
We have moved into their turf, and sometimes, they try to reclaim it.
No need to panic, just to learn how to co-exist, as long as the wildlife does
no harm to humans.
A few bird feeders is a small price to pay for allowing this young one to live
among us.

Btw-black bears NO NOT attack.
As another poster reported, this one fled up a tree when a dog barked.
The only time a black bear can get aggressive is if you come near their cubs.
When we hike in the mountains out west, and it is the time when cubs are
roaming around with their mothers, we carry whistles and periodically blow them
to alert bears of our presence.
We see them often out west.
Our hummingbird feeders are fair game.
A sharp bang on a window and they take off.

A brown bear is another matter….

So, let’s enjoy this reminder of our natural environment and the variety of
species that inhabit it.

And, please, keep those posts of sightings coming!

Re: [LincolnTalk] What am I doing wrong with my hummingbird feeder?

2024-05-06 Thread Sara Mattes
It is a time of year when blossoms may offer more than a feeder.
We have feeders at our CO mountain house- no fussing with cleaning, or store
bought stuff, no red dye- just sugar and water boiled and cooled. When they
are hungry, they will buzz bomb you and fight each other to get to that feeder.
Also know they are very territorial and will spend all their time battling to
protect their turf/ feeder.
Relax, and at some point they will move in.

[LincolnTalk] A very important seat that you probably never heard of-

2024-05-05 Thread Sara Mattes
We have had a “rep” for years who, I believe, does not represent our values.
Please educate yourself as to the importance of this seat, and about the
candidates.
In my mind, Mara is head and shoulders and everything else above the current
rep.
Watch debates, read, attend a candidates event here in Lincoln on June 6…and
VOTE Dolan on Sept.3 2024

A wonderful record.I encourage others to do the same-tell stories, large and small, and share them, as Jack has done. They become a record who we are/ were, and part of our communities’s legacy for future generations.Sent from my iPhoneOn Apr 24, 2024, at 11:37 AM, jfu...@comcast.net wrote:I moved to MA in ’79 and fortunately discovered Lincoln in a “house mate wanted” ad in The Phoenix alternative newspaper.  I moved into this ‘group’ house with three other young adults on Old Sudbury Rd that Karl Van Leer had built on land his father, Hans, had given him.  Karl had since sold the house to a couple who were our landlords.  It was a Boise Cascade model home - Karl worked for B.C.  I learned later that we were known in the neighborhood as ’the commune’ :-).That house, which was across the road from the Coffin’s, has been replaced - as has the Coffin house….with the former “Pillar House Restaurant” where Margie and her family reside.Late in the 6+ years I lived there, I finally met Karl’s father, Hans, whose house was across the large field from the house Karl built.  (Han’s house is still there adjacent to Pony Henge. Hans and his first wife had been best friend with Helen and her husband.   After each of their spouses passed away, Hans and Helen married). The day Hans and I finally met, he’d stopped by to chat about something and upon his departure, with an offer for me to join him and Helen for lunch sometime, I asked him if I could call him by his first name, which I though was George or something.  He said in his lovely Dutch accent, “Well, you can call me that, but my name is Hans”.  I couldn’t stop laughing:-)We enjoyed occasional lunches and Hans would tell me stories of how he first came to the US by ship to attend school in California around the early 1930s.  He met some Amherst College students on the ship and they convinced him to forget California - “There’s nothing happening out there”. :-).   So he went to  Amherst with them but because his academic records had been sent to CA, Amherst could not admit him.  So Amherst admissions sent him up the road to Mass Agricultural College - now U Mass - because their admissions dean was also from Holland.  So Hans got in …..and studied Agriculture.  After graduation, he was to return to Holland but wanted to stay in the US.  His fraternity brother’s father owned a tree service company in Boston. I never did meet Karl or Rachel, but their granddaughter worked with us at Dana-Farber a few years ago.  I told her stories about her great-grandfather, Hans, that apparently even her mother, Han’s granddaughter, didn’t know :-)Had digital technology been around then, I’d have recorded Han’s stories and taken lots of photos - but………jfu...@comcast.net617 835 3087 (C)      __o   _'\ <,..(•) /  (•)

All,
There is alt least one knitting group in Lincoln.
One meets at Bemis and is listed in the COA Monthly Newsletter.
I believe you can find more info on the town website, both on the town calendar
and on the COA page.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Lincoln's Governance

2024-01-04 Thread Sara Mattes
I was a Select for 12 years.
Each Select had an assignment as a liaison to other boards, committees &
commissions, but only in a passive way.
We observed and answered questions if asked and if the subject was within our
jurisdiction.
There was a fairly bright line dividing jurisdictions.

Most appointed Ad Hoc and even Standing Committees were made up of
representatives from the general public.
If board, committee and/or commission members were seated, they were a
minority, and often non-voting.
The intent was to get broad representation and diversity from the citizens.
This also assisted in hearing a variety of opinions and ideas and to reduce the
potential for an “echo chamber.”

As to advocacy, as Selects we saw ourselves as “conveners”- to bring
information regarding decisions that needed to be made to the town for
discussion and debate and provide the town with forums for this.
We were setting the table, and the town would decide what to chose.
The principal forum was Town Meeting.

In 2002, we introduced State of the Town to expand opportunities for
information sharing and discussion as boards, committees and commissions were
formulating bylaws and budgets.
The draft thoughts of the boards were committed to writing and compiled by the
Selects into a hefty briefing document that was sent to each household in early
fall.
A meeting was convened 2 weeks later for citizens to come the the Donaldson
Auditorium to discuss what has been drafted.
Those agencies that were considering large projects, budgets or major changes
to zoning…anything “big,”
Were given 5 minutes to offer an executive summary.
The detailed analysis had been offered in the written document.
The majority of the day was devoted to citizen questions, comments and debate.
Occasionally, agencies asked questions of each other.

The intent and the success of these forums was to break down barriers between
citizens and seated officials and to also break down stovepiping of boards.
We all had an opportunity to speak and to be heard in an informal setting.
The citizen feedback gave agencies information to adjust whatever was being
contemplated for the warrant.

At it’s inception, the SoTT was not seen as or used as a platform to promote an
idea, project, budget, etc.
It was intended to give citizens the floor, and it did.

In fact, Lincoln won the 2003 Mass Municipal Association Award for Innovation.

The consequence was that Town Meeting became much more efficient and any
amendments from the floor were developed from the information gleamed at SoTT
and follow-up conversations.

Perhaps we would benefit from revisiting the original format of the SoTT.

Respectfully,
Sara Mattes

I would urge all to put thoughts, comments and questions in wiring and share
them with the relevant boards and even the public, through LT and The Squirrel.
These are the opportunities to have a more yeasty public discussion.

[LincolnTalk] From a friend who farms on the eastern plains of CO, on finding an abandoned burial ground

2024-01-04 Thread Sara Mattes
" Respecting the past is an uncomplicated way of hoping for a better future, or
at the very least knowing that the seeds we plant today may well grow into some-
thing that will outshine ourselves. Those that reside here are more than just
letters and numerals on tombstones.
They are the past that becomes our future.
It's good to remember where and what we came from and where we're all going."

I find this deeply offensive.

Our Public Safety Dept. is highly professional and well-respected thought the

They keep us safe and work with the utmost sensitivity to our small town
population, regardless of race, color or creed.
I have been here since 1976 and have raised 2 boys here-lord knows PS has been
tested by them and their peers.
All our experiences have revealed a truly professional department.
We are very blessed to have had great leadership in the department-most
recently in Chief Kevin Kennedy -and I am confident that level of stellar
professionalism will continue.
Thank you to that department and to all who serve us.

[LincolnTalk] Town Meeting history and a path forward

2023-12-23 Thread Sara Mattes
All these conversations call for a full examination of both the origins and
history of practice and the evolution of laws regarding how we govern ourselves.

Some of this will begin as we prepare for our celebration of the 250th.
The Lincoln250, the Lincoln Historical Society and the Bemis Free Lecture
Series will offer programs and events to explore how we evolved up to 1775, and
will set the stage for a comprehensive look at how we got to where we are today.

It may well call for the re-creation of the Governance Committee-a
free-standing committee of volunteers not already serving on boards, committees
and commissions-to examine existing laws/legal frameworks for governance, best
practice, what others have tired, what has worked and what hasn’t, and come
forward with recommendations.
That would be a healthy exercise and get expanded citizen involvement into the
deep dive required to advocate for change … or not.

Examination, diagnosis, and only then, prescription.

In the meantime, we do know that we could make a simple and immediate way to
make Town Meeting more efficient and user-friendly …the implementation of
clicker voting!
It has been used by neighbors and they have given it the seal of approval.

The only thing that appears to stand in the wya os the political will to find
$$ in the budget and implement before the March Town Meeting.

2023-12-22 Thread Sara Mattes
Let us explore what is legal and possible.  It is not simply a matter of mechanics.Let’s fully examine and diagnose BEFORE we prescribe. The one thing could do immediately is to implement clicker ( anonymous ) voting but leadership is reluctant to citing budget issues.I would put that at the topOf my list and make cuts to accommodate.Sent from my iPhoneOn Dec 20, 2023, at 8:57 AM, Virginia Goodwin wrote:I believe the proposal is to vote after, not in advance. So any floor amendments would already have been established. In my mind, the pinnacle of "democracy" is the vote. Not floor amendments, not getting to speak your 2 minute pithy statement (which actually is quite limiting, because how many 2 minute statements can people really sit through? Very few individuals, in proportion to the total electorate, can even be heard in the open comment period). The vote is what gets counted, and ultimately what decides the issues. Therefore, we should not erect artificial barriers to allowing as many voters as possible to get their votes in.It's fine to have the open comment period, but we should expand access to the vote, so that it is not dependent upon physically being in the building at the exact right moment, which is not published in advance. Voting should be scheduled, across a range of times so that as many people as possible can all have their voices heard *in the way that gets counted*, even people who, through scheduling conflicts or physical limitations or whatever, can't physically be in the building all day.VirginiaOn Wed, Dec 20, 2023 at 9:44 AM Sara Mattes <samat...@gmail.com> wrote:All,The point of Town Meeting format is to allow  binding amendments from the floor ( you and me) and to hear oral arguments that may introduce new facts and ideas. While it might often seem all is already known - some may have a crystal ball- I, for one, benefit from hearing good questions and others opinions.Returning to the amendment- inviting any and all in directly shaping the actual warrant, on the floor, during town meeting is an amazing democratic offering. How can you vote in advance if you don’t know what is being voted on?This does not speak to how the meeting is conducted, only the importance of being there.Sent from my iPadOn Dec 20, 2023, at 9:08 AM, Adam M Hogue <adam.m.ho...@gmail.com> wrote:Paul 100% agreed.  Also, especially in Lincoln things do not just appear at town meeting we have dozens of meetings and forums before hand so if you have a major opinion or want something changed those are the times to do it.  This is why I support we vote as soon as possible or do ballot votes we should come to town meeting having already flushed out the issues. Adam M HogueCell: (978) 828-6184On Dec 20, 2023, at 8:53 AM, Paul Rice via Lincoln <lincoln@lincolntalk.org> wrote:The 2 minute limit for speakers at town meeting has raised some questions. I’m not part of the group that governs town meetings but have run meetings many times in the past so let me try to explain the reason for limiting speakers time at meetings. In the 80s I attended all town meetings, early morning until early evening, coming back on a weeknight because we didn’t finish. People would stand and speak for 10 minutes or more often totally off subject so most people would give up and just call the vote so they could go home or leave before the vote. At this meeting I counted 20+ people at the mikes in the auditorium, also some more were in the gym. At 2 minutes giving some time between speakers this would take close to an hour. At 3 minutes it could be 1 1/2 hours. If we are to accomplish the town’s business it important that the meeting proceeds at a reasonable rate so people stay and vote. If you are familiar with the warrant article prior to attending the meeting it should be possible to prepare a statement that is short, clear and takes only 2 minutes. If you have major points to make you should consider asking for a place on the agenda to present a rebuttal. Sorry this ran so long, I usually try to keep things short and to the point. Can we require the highest level of green construction and union labor? As we are bundling all housing near the train to be eco-friendly and we are a social justice community, it seems the criteria noted above are critical.I wonder if the Globe took a close look at what both Lexington and Brookline approved?I suspect not as Lexington included many districts far away from town center. And Brookline zoned for a low target number. Also, they have not looked at Bedford or Concord…also taking advantage of existing density and more proposing more dispersed areas  for rezoning, and neither looking to exceed minimum. The Globe has had some great reporting, but often not reporting all of the stories when that info  does not fit their narrative.Sent from my iPadOn Dec 22, 2023, at 10:00 AM, Robert Ahlert wrote:Hi all -Sending out some screen shots.  This is the same article that heavily criticizes Milton for being exclusionary with its policies by the way. [LincolnTalk] Something Special is happening!

Yesterday, the mall was bustling.
The parking lot was full, with cars circling to find a spot.
Twisted Tree was hopping and Donelans had lines for check out.

And then, there was Something Special…really special .
It was filled with folks, sometimes there for the first time, finding
EVERYTHING- all sorts of things for young and old, all price points, from
practical kitchen items to the sublimely beautiful Simon Pearce glass, and the
things for babies and children…WOW.

The book selection is eclectic and includes a great selection of local history
books, including the comprehensive and indispensable history of Lincoln by Jack
MacLean, “ A Rich Harvest.”

Don’t miss this unique gem in our lively business district.

It really is SOMETHING SPECIAL!

Happy holidays and wishes for peace.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Town Meeting Moments

2023-12-20 Thread Sara Mattes
Let me remind all that the TM was packed for that vote, and the proponents for
funding could not reach a 2/3 majority…the outcome was hardly the outcome of
the work of a small number “vocal minority” at a Town Meeting where “a few
people showed up.”
There were suggestions that the Fire Department needed to eb called because the
room was so packed!
Perhaps we need a deep dive to understand how that process went awry?
We have yet to do that and that lack of understanding has haunted us ever since.

If we teased it apart, we discover some inconvenient very complicated truths
and hopefully, it might clear the air.

[LincolnTalk] Town Meeting- Big Picture

2023-12-20 Thread Sara Mattes
All,The point of Town Meeting format is to allow  binding amendments from the floor ( you and me) and to hear oral arguments that may introduce new facts and ideas. While it might often seem all is already known - some may have a crystal ball- I, for one, benefit from hearing good questions and others opinions.Returning to the amendment- inviting any and all in directly shaping the actual warrant, on the floor, during town meeting is an amazing democratic offering. How can you vote in advance if you don’t know what is being voted on?This does not speak to how the meeting is conducted, only the importance of being there.Sent from my iPadOn Dec 20, 2023, at 9:08 AM, Adam M Hogue wrote:Paul 100% agreed. Adam M HogueCell: (978) 828-6184On Dec 20, 2023, at 8:53 AM, Paul Rice via Lincoln wrote:The 2 minute limit for speakers at town meeting has raised some questions. Re: [LincolnTalk] Retail/Mall-Viability/Profitablity

2023-12-19 Thread Sara Mattes
Here is another statement about revenues.
It appears that except for the COVID year, the revenues exceeded expenses for
the RLF.
How could that be if the tenants, who have been there for some time (Something
Special has been there 47 years!) were paying enough rent to make the total
operation profitable.
Do we know what the profit margins are at other malls?
At least ours is in the black, so that must not be a main driver for their
desire to rezone and sell.

[LincolnTalk] Town Meeting Moments

2023-12-19 Thread Sara Mattes
During some of those extended debates, I sometimes learned a lot.

There was a famous meeting in the mid 1980s where the town was asked to accept
a “Peace Pole” form Japan.
It was a Citizens Petition that no one expected to be very controversial.
Who would/could be against a Peace Pole?

It was my ignorance not to realize that many who had come from China or had
descended from those who had, had very strong feelings about Japan.
Dr. An Wang was one of them.
He stood before us explain his powerful emotions at the thought-how it triggers
memories of the brutal treatment he and his family had endured, and that other
Chinese had endured at the hands of the Japanese during WWII.
We had a history lesson, but it did not end there.
Other got up and spoke to the need to heal -if the Japanese could reach out to
us, after what they had endured too, surely we could all reach out teach other.
The discussion went on for some time…back and forth.
By the end of the meeting, Dr. Wang expressed his appreciation of our
willingness to listen and that now he felt it was the right thing to do-to
accept the Peace Pole.

You will find that pole planted in the SW corner of the town pocket park across
from the mall that the Garden Club loving cares for.

At this recent Town Meeting, most were held to a strict 2 minutes, not goin on
for 10.
In fact, one former town official has his mike cut as he hit the 2.5 minute
mark!

I, for one, am willing to listen to my fellow citizens, all 15 or more.
Who knows, I might learn something.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Outage Map | Eversource

2023-12-19 Thread Sara Mattes
I stand corrected on outages.
I will still advocate for investment in our own muni.

In the usual case, when Lincoln has outages of 1/2 day or more, Concord does
not.
When they do, they are usually in isolated locations and quickly repaired.
It is because they have invested in creating a grid, much of it buried, to be
resilient.
They have a system where areas are divided and if one goes out, the others
remain online.
And the outage is reported to ac central station and not dependent on resident
reporting.
This past storm must have broken through all that resiliency where usually it
offers great protection.

At least that was what was described to the Selected in the 2009 or so.
At the time wer were in discussion, they had professional “excess capacity” so
that we would not need to create our own staffing and billing, etc.
There were legislative hoops that needed clearing and then we needed to buy the
infrastructure from EverSource.
As we talk about bringing our town up to date, perhaps this critical piece of
infrastructure might be worth some discussion.

As it stands, if you are fragile and do not have great resources, and cannot
afford a generator, you are in the cold and dark.
The lack of attention to this only makes the wealth gap here greater.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Zoom: Select discussion on Town Meeting 12/18/2023-Governance and Faith in TM votes.

2023-12-19 Thread Sara Mattes
Lot’s of small towns…it would be interesting to have a pilot BEFORE Town
Meeting where there will be critical votes.
As many others have experience, we could easily make inquiry, through the
Clerk’s Office, and have some answers by the next Selects meeting in January.
Also, we could have pricing by then too.

Why stall and crawl with such legacy votes before us?

[LincolnTalk] Outage Map | Eversource

2023-12-19 Thread Sara Mattes
As we are told by Eversource that this outage will be a multi- day event, we
might note that Concord, Belmont and towns with town muni- electrics have no
outages.
Why?
They make investments in infrastructure and resilience and not shareholders.
Customers are the shareholders.
Perhaps we should return to discussing the idea of becoming a muni- electric
town.
Let’s make this kind of an investment in infrastructure that will be a truly
worthwhile gift to generations to come.
