Re: [LincolnTalk] Roadway plan

2024-09-20 Thread Sara Mattes
In reverse order:
2. Lincoln does not do takings, regardless of what the law may allow.
Cambridge has been very friendly to our conservation efforts, often provision
$$ to assist in acquisitions, if it is in the watershed.
So, we have a vested interest in friendly collaborations with Cambridge and
watershed folks.

1. The fact that the sidewalk is potentially draining into the watershed,
Cambridge would object…as would Lincoln if in a similar position.

All can attend the BPC meeting or an RTC meeting and further pursue this
information.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Roadway plan

2024-09-19 Thread Sara Mattes
Agree with all your points, but this is not simply the City of Cambridge, it is
the city Water Department, and part of the Cambridge Watershed.
So, there is no such thing as the ability to do a taking/eminent domain.
In addition, the town has repeatedly declined to do so on private property
throughout town.

Back in the early 2000s, and the early days of the RTC, we did a town-wide
roadway plan for roadway improvements.
Then, we were in regular dialog with Cambridge.
They were helpful in that they agreed to clear out understory brush on the
corner so as to improve sightline at the stop sign on the south side of Old
County…but that was about it.
Ken Bassett was the liaison from the RTC to Cambridge.

But that was then…..

WE DID IT!!!

Hi Everyone,

We did it! I’m writing this at 1:44 a.m., right after the Associated Press has called the race and declared me the winner.

I’ve been up for almost 24 hours and want to write when I’m able to be more thoughtful, but wanted to make sure you know that we won and how very much I thank all of you.

We did it, all of us, working together with shared values to make sure that our Governor’s Councillor reflects the values of our district, so that we may have a more enlightened judiciary, with a justice system that is more just.

We did it

Take care,
Mara

HAPPY LABOR DAY AND PARADE,
LOWELL SUN RUNS MUST-READ STORY
BEHIND THE STORY OF THE GOVERNOR'S COUNCILLOR ENDORSEMENTS, GOTV, AND
PARTY AFTER THE POLLS CLOSE!

Hi Everyone,

It’s incredibly exciting to be so close to primary day! Everywhere I go in the district, people tell me they have already voted for me.  At Market Basket in Maynard, this fellow came up to me to tell me voted for me, and he’s telling his friends to vote for me too. Later that day a doctor told me his patient told him to vote for me. Folks are spreading the word, and I am very grateful! Don’t stop until the polls close. Email your friends with The Boston Globe’s endorsement, and tell them U.S. Senator Ed Markey, State Auditor Diana DiZoglio, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, Congressman Seth Moulton, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, and Congresswoman Lori Trahan endorsed me too, because the choice is so clear. For the full list of my endorsements, click HERE.

This morning, I’m getting ready to join supporters to march in Marlborough’s incredible Labor Day parade! I’m incredibly proud of my endorsements from labor unions, including IBEW Local 103, Ironworkers Local 7, Merrimack Valley Central Labor Council, Plumbers & Gasfitters Local 12, State Police Association of Massachusetts, and United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America Local 2168. I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of members there, and you, and if you’d like to join us it’s not too late. Just email me at m...@maradolan.com. Even Walnut is helping us get ready!

Digging deeper to get the story behind the story on why four sitting Governor’s Councillors endorsed me, State House News Service spoke with Councillors Eileen Duff, Joe Ferreira, Terry Kennedy. The Lowell Sun ran the story, which includes a lot of background. It had nothing to do with "payback". As Councillor Duff said, "We need someone who can work with other people, and frankly understands the legal issues... and comprehends what's going on in meetings... I don't feel that District 3 has any representation right now. And they deserve it." Click HERE to read the whole story. The choice is crystal clear.

If you have not yet voted, make sure to get to the polls tomorrow, Tuesday, September 3rd! You can find your polling place HERE.
After the polls close, join us at The Mighty Squirrel in Waltham for a night to remember!

I can’t thank you all enough. All my endorsers, everyone who made a contribution, everyone who emailed their friends, sent postcards, put up a lawn sign, wore a button, joined us at standouts like this one in Billerica, and everyone who passed the word along that the Governor’s Council matters, and knows that this race matters a lot, you have all made an immeasurable difference!

We are still reaching out to voters. Yesterday I joined a party in Concord, spoke about my candidacy, and got more support! Concord attorney Dudley Goar summed it up beautifully in his letter to the editor of The Concord Bridge. “Mara will modernize the judiciary and ultimately reduce crime in the Commonwealth.” Read his very thoughtful let

Re: [LincolnTalk] Walden/Hamsom

2024-08-27 Thread Sara Mattes
There will be a dramatic increase in private ( large, as in 737s) jet traffic.
The proposed hangers are not to house aircraft already parked at Hanscom!
It is to expand capacity.
It is a money maker.
To do so, hundreds of trees will be cut, reducing tree canopy, canopy that are
like a set of lungs, and also provide shade/ cooling.
In its place, acres and acres or tarmac- absorbing and reflecting heat from the
sun.
Those planes are PRIVATE jets, designed to carry one to a very few passengers.
The impact on the many and the environment to accommodate the few is YUGE.

I suggest you read the expect testimony/ comments in response to the EIR- all
publicly available.

European countries have determined such private aircraft undermine all efforts
to address climate change and air quality and thus have banned such aircraft
from domestic flights.
This is a move to protect all and future generations.

Finally, there has been a complete misunderstanding of the Brinkley/ Walden
piece- it was not a straightforward news report.
It should have been obvious Thai it was a Op Ed…one noted historian’s view of
the impacts of the proposed expansion on a national treasure.
Brinkley was pointing out the irony.
I urge all to revisit a lovely video again.

For me, Mara’s understand of the entire judicial system, is committed to
correcting some incredible disparities in convictions and pardons, appreciating
and advocating for judges who also understand substance abuse, and a commitment
to ensuring a a woman’s right to choose her own approach to health care.

But, those are my opinions.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Mattress knowledge?

2024-08-24 Thread Sara Mattes
Try Garner Mattress-a local family business…the factory is on the North Shore,
but I believe they still have a showroom in Newton Highlands.
Great products and the company stands behind them 100%.

Good luck!

Unlike her opponent who, in a recent mailing you have received, implied
endorsements that don’t exist and sends you to a webpage that does not exist,
Mara is the real deal.
Mara has a long list of endorsements from pole who know her, have worked with
her, and look forward to her contributions tht she will make to then Gov.
Council.
If you have not voted, please so so, and vote for MARA!

(In this race-the primary on Sept 3 is the ONLY contest for this office-so vote

Dear Mr Darin and friends,

From the notice, we assumed that the 15th was the valid date.

Then a truck showed up in front of the fire hydrant yesterday.

Then we knew that possibly the date was wrong.  The date

mistake was possibly not known to the Department or they

did not care.  We had to take it like a forced emergency.

Then the delay.  There was no messaging, no courtesy.

I called the Water office at 3:30, the message was "We are

closed.  Call non-emergency Police if there is a water emergency."

I called the 259 line.  The officer was helpful and said that

the estimated time was 6 PM, but was not sure.

Then I wrote to Lincoln Talk to alert people.   The water

came at about 5:30 PM.

I have been in town for twenty years.  This is the first time

I felt a disruption of service was totally mismanaged.

Water is important in our daily life!

Bijoy Misra

Northern Bedford Road and Mill Street water customers,

I apologize for the wrong date on the Interruption of Water Service Notification and the water main work taking longer than expected yesterday (Wednesday
 the 14th).

The Water Department notified everyone we knew would be affected on Friday by placing blue notification flyers in their mailboxes on Friday the 9th.
We also posted the Interruption of Water Service notification on Lincoln Talk, the Lincoln Squirrel, and the Lincoln Water Department Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/747772673496079).
We expected the work to be complete by 2:00pm and have a recent history of having water back on before our estimated time. Occasionally, when working on underground infrastructure, unforeseen circumstances arise. We were forced to close valves further from
the job site than expected to isolate the work area, creating an interruption in water service on Mill Street as well. Our crew and contractor worked diligently, but we could not get the water turned on until 5:00 – 6:00pm.

When we knew the project was running past the estimated 2:00pm time, we notified the police and fire departments, and manned the phones to return
phone calls. We also sent an update out on Blackboard Connect, the reverse 911 service the Town of Lincoln uses. We apologize for any inconvenience, but this is the nature of water main repair work. We typically schedule repairs during the day, as many customers
are away from home during work hours.

We have complaints of air in the water lines on Bedford Road outside of the affected service area. We will get out there immediately to bleed air
 from hydrants.

We appreciate your patience and understanding,

Darin LaFalam

Water service mismanagement

A faulty notice came in mail : "Water repairs on Bedford Road

pon Wednesday
August 15, 7 AM to 2 PM." Water is off

since the morning.  Water office is closed.

Police says it could be 6 PM as an estimate.

I don't understand why they can't phase it so as not to cause inconvenience.

No shower, no cooking, 3:30 PM.

Re: [LincolnTalk] More on the Veterinary Industry

2024-08-13 Thread Sara Mattes
Thanks for doing due diligence!

I noticed a definite change there a number of years a go.
They used to be great-saved the life of my cat, and didn’t push additional care.
A few years later, the whole vibe had changed.
Old (caring and talented) staff had left.
Blue Pearl/Mars are cooling out employment opportunities for all in the field.

I travel to Walpole to excellent care in a longtime private practice….Windhover.
I go to Woburn for specialty care.

I pray these practices outlive my dog!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Lincoln bear, and compost bin - Oh, my !!

2024-08-11 Thread Sara Mattes
We have been composting for 40 years, in the same spot.
Metal fence posts in the ground, wrapped in heavy chicken wire
As it gets high, we dig a deep hole and throw kitchen scraps/ compost in there.
We have never turned, or rotated, just let things take their course.
No animal / dairy products ever.
No problem with anything being dismantled.
Compost abounds.
Good luck!

Moral of the story-always ask before jumping to conclusions.I am not sure if there is an obligation by the PO to notify you.You were smart to track it down.Lead with kindness as we never know what the other person is going through.Sent from my iPadOn Aug 3, 2024, at 9:25 PM, Nicholas Ribush wrote:Sorry. "Stole" was tongue in cheek, the ! supposedly indicating that. Still and all, it was taken by the mailman and I was not informed. No miscommunication or misunderstanding.Clearly not outgoing mail. I would go to them and point out that it is in their best interest to play nice and give you a full refund, and possibly a refund for the value of whatever was lost as a result of their failure.  Because, if you lodge an official complaint against them with the USPS (with that photo they so nicely provided as proof), they could face some pretty stiff fines."Nevertheless, I agree our local USPS do a great job, but there have been these hiccups. I am looking for a local small engine repair person. My gas push-lawnmower needs to have the carburetor cleaned; the mower works well and yet it starts a bit less easily than it should. I suspect ?junk? in the carburetor is the issue. I lack the tools to do
 the carburetor check.

I know the gas station on 117 does lawn mower repairs, though in my experience they also run very busy. Any additional recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I also will need someone with a truck to help me get the mower to/from repair person, if you have tips about anyone who may be available to help. The mower is clean and *empty of gasoline* currently.

Signed, ?eager to mow?
aka Kathleen Lomatoski

[LincolnTalk] Fwd: Sad Announcement

2024-07-20 Thread Sara Mattes
When we built our home here in 1978, our “landscaping” budget went down a
hole…into a well that was budgeted for 125’ and turned out to be 550'.

It was very discouraging, but a trip to Weston Nurseries lifted the spirits.
Their amazing staff helped us map out an affordable plan for incremental
additions as we could afford them-hardy plants that were suitable to our
climate and budget.
They also clued us into the pallet sales held in the fall-a gold mine of
affordable plants that were left over from the previous season.

All the plants survived and thrived.
The genius of Wayne Mezitt and his hardy hybrids dominate our property.
The most magnificent are the 3 towering sugar maples, now 45 years old and
producing wonderful ample sap for the Flints to convert to syrup, are a
testimony to Mezitt’s horticultural wizardry..

Thank you, Mr. Mezitt-your legacy graces us and continues here in Lincoln at
your newest outpost.

Thoughts to your friends and family at this sad, sad time

Re: [LincolnTalk] 'Tick Bomb': What To Know In MA About Species Behind Meat Allergies

2024-07-12 Thread Sara Mattes
I suggested testing after a tick bite.

As the article notes, this syndrome is becoming more common as the tick that
carries it is becoming more common.
And, the syndrome was only identified a few years ago.
MA docs are not very familiar with it, but are getting more so.
It is a specialty area for allergists, who are now educating colleagues about
the growing occurances.

If one develops alpha-gal, you will not know until you are hit with some pretty
nasty, and even life-threatening symptoms.
If you test positive, you simply avoid ALL red meat products, including gelatin
that hides in may places, including medications.
The alpha gal can dissipate, over time, and you can return to eating meat.
But, the only safe way to know is to test every 6-12 months.

Of course, if you are vegetarian, or vegan, or never eat “red” meat, you can
forgo any of the above.

I have had bouts over the course of 15 years and never knew what it was until
recently.
I say “bouts” as they were intermittent.
It does not happen every time you eat red meat, and the symptoms are delayed
onset.
You can eat dinner, go to bed, and be woken up with some very scary and painful
symptoms, as I have.
I did learn, early on, to be sensitive to the symptoms and to pound children’s
Benadryl as soon as symptoms started, even though had no idea what was causing
them.
But they are VERY scary.

It was only a few years ago that it became known that the cause of these
symptoms was triggered by a tick bite.
I never go anywhere without an Epic Pen and lots of Benadryl, just in case.

If anyone has had tick bites and managed not to get any of the tick borne
diseases, cunt your self lucky!

Just be forewarned.

[LincolnTalk] 'Tick Bomb': What To Know In MA About Species Behind Meat Allergies

2024-07-12 Thread Sara Mattes
ALPHA-GAL is serious business.
Given that symptom onset is delayed and often happens at night, it is hard to
connect to the tick bite.
Many MDs are still unaware of this tock-born problem.
A simple blood test is now available to test.
If you know you have been bitten, it is worth asking for the test.

If you ever experience and serious itching, hives, swelling of tongue & lips,
and there is no know trigger, get the test.
These symptoms often respond top Benadryl.
Children’s chewable are faster acting than the adult pills, and you can add to
dosage as you note a lack of complete response.

As notes in the article, the incidence of this is on the rise.
Climate change has been a facilitating factor.

Be aware, at best, alpha-gal it is extremely uncomfortable, at worst, it is
life-threatening.

While the overall tick population has been on the dramatic rise in
Massachusetts in recent years, there is one species that hunts in packs.

Re: [LincolnTalk] seeking advice on invisible electric fences for dogs

2024-07-12 Thread Sara Mattes
The success of an electric fence is less in the quality and exterior the
company, but in the temperament of the dog , and also training .
Some breeds and temperaments just barrel right through them when temped by a
squirrel or some such trigger.
Then, the trigger leaves and the dog won’t/ can’t cross back in.
I have an easy going Springer and have 1.5 acres fenced electric- never an
issue… as long as the line is in tact.
I would consult with Megan Lytton , dog trainer par excellent, located at the
mall. She can best guide you.

Good luck… and lucky you to have them moving here!

Every month the National Park Service celebrates different national holidays and initiatives that provide opportunities to share their mission with the public. Not surprisingly this July, in which the 248th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence will be commemorated, “America at 250: Advance Equality and Justice for All” is one of those initiatives.

Within Freedom’s Way we, and our many partners, are deep into exploring and planning for the 250th to share new perspectives on the impact of that event on the region. To serve as a platform for that exploration, we invite you to peruse Freedom’s Way 250 which features our multi-year initiative, Revolutionary Stories and resources to help plan for the coming year. As a curated overview of the region’s activities, it’s a work in progress and we invite you to let us know what you are planning, so we can share and support your work.

Kristen M. Delatour is a public history and digital media intern for Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area and Minute Man National Historical Park. She is a master's student in historical archaeology. Her research interests include the study of racialization and labor within enslaved and free Black people within the Northeast.

As an intern, she will continue historical research on Case Whitney, a formerly enslaved man who labored at The Wayside in Concord, Massachusetts. Kristen will aid in reinterpreting archaeological collections from the Casey House Site, featured throughout Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area and Minute Man National Historical Park media.

Interpretative goals will be centered around understanding the lives of enslaved and free Black people within Concord. As we continue this research, we are excited to share new narratives exploring Black histories in New England.

If the kids don’t understand me and I don’t understand them, I suspect we will

Re: [LincolnTalk] Hanscom DEIR is inadequate

2024-06-26 Thread Sara Mattes
I will share reports from the Bedford Citizen as they become available.
(Or, you can easily subscribe yourself).
The reporter on this issue is Mike Rosenberg.
He is a seasoned journalist-onetime Editor of the Concord Journal, who hired
Susan Fargo to be Editor of the Lincoln Journal-those were the days.

He is former Bedford Selectmen who served along side of me on HATS and HFAC.

We dealt with DEIR’s of yore, and other tangles with Massport, as we worked to
support the Air Force Base from potential closure.
So, Mikes coverage is incredibly well-informed on all aspects and tricky,
sticky wickets.

And while this delay won’t necessarily stop the project, it puts more sticks in
the spokes of the wheel.
It will allow for more pressure from both sides to build.
And, the Massport Board is a creature of the Gov.

The designation of the area and especially. MMNHP as “Endangered” by the Natal
Trust put a spotlight on this…and, I am sure, caused great discomfort…as it
should!

The continued note that this project goes against all the climate goals the Gov
professes to advance is another critical pressure point.

.

Stay tuned….

Re: [LincolnTalk] Changes to Town Water?

2024-06-26 Thread Sara Mattes
We have a well
The water tasted great and was always clear.
But, It was incredibly hard.
So, we have a whole house backwash filtration system for that, a neutralizer +
RO for drinking, cooking and frog.
The RO addresses most impurities, taste and also those nasty plastic
particulates.

You might just go for RO.
There are a variety of ways to install it, and varying costs, so do some
research.
We have used Friot for over a decade.
The RO system is our newest addition, and we couldn’t be happier.

Best,
Sara

Re: [LincolnTalk] Historic Boston tours

2024-06-16 Thread Sara Mattes
I am not sure there is much in the way of decent bus tours.
Duck Tours are fun, but incredibly historically inaccurate.
The Freedom Trail NPS tours are good, but involve walking on hills.
If you select certain sites, you can mitigate walking-African Meeting House,
the BPL (fabulous, undiscovered gem), Old Norht Church and Paul Revere House
all offer good and accurate tours, with fascinating glimpse into specific
periods.

Consider Concord and the walking tours out of the Visitors Center + Robbins
House.
https://robbinshouse.org/Plus the Concord Museum, the Old Manse, Old North
Bridge, Emerson House and Orchard (Alcott) House…all tell great stores and
don’t involve much walking.

In Lincoln, don’t miss Codman and Gropius House and, of course, the MMNHP
Visitors Center.

Lots to do and see!

We are an embarrassment of riches.

[LincolnTalk] Request for info

2024-06-04 Thread Sara Mattes
In 2012, we joined the town program to go solar.
We signed a 20 year lease with Astrum Solar.
The sold the SRECs and we paid a much lower amount, up front for the 44 panels.

A number of years ago, we contacted them to remove a portion of the panels so
that we could reroof a portion of the house.
While they were slow to put the panel back up, in the end, they did.
They system has been great and keeping our bills to almost zero.

All was well, until it wasn’t.
Now, some of the panels are not functioning as they should - might be the
squirrels that nested under a portion…not only did they maybe do something to
the panels, the nest material comes down and is a mess. At least we now know
what at the sound of little feet all over our roof was!)

We now need to have panels removed to do repairs, and Astrum is no more…have
been bought out by who knows.
When we contacted what had been Astrum, they sent us to an email that keeps
bouncing, and a phone number that does not ring-Kilowatt Systems.

Does anyone out there know anything about Kilowatt Systems?

Is there anyone else who signed up with the town program and Astrum who knows
who now owns our panels and is collecting $$ for the SRECS?

According to our lease, we cannot remove panels or have any repair work done
without permission of the Lessor, whom ever that might be?

All you green tech folks, any ideas where to turn?

Oy….
