Re: [LincolnTalk] ISO of Lawn Mower Repair Person

You might try Lincoln Gas on Route 117. They have a sign out for small
engine repair of lawn mowers and snow blowers.

Can anyone recommend a good dry cleaning company? The one in Lincoln doesn?t
seem to be open.

Thank you

We use the dry cleaner in Wayland in the now closed complex where Whole

[LincolnTalk] More about Sherman's Bridge

2021-11-16 Thread khablow
This is from a friend in Sudbury who is an engineer on the Sudbury
conservation board:

About 5 yrs ago, I happened on the subject of Sherman's bridge during an
unrelated conversation with the Sudbury DPW director, not long before he
retired. He said Wayland and Sudbury swap maintenance duty every year. He
also said the state had some grant money available not long before I was
speaking with him, where he had asked his Wayland counterpart to join
together to replace the bridge with something preferable, but the Wayland
DPW director wanted to bring the project before town meeting, which was
infeasible time-wise. The project likely would have been a non-starter at
town meeting anyway, since Waylanders along the road were unlikely to want
to see more traffic, which I've heard is part of the reason the bridge is
the way it is - when the bridge closed circa 1989, Wayland didn't want to
rebuild it, but they relented with a bridge that would keep traffic and
speeds down; I had not been aware of the historical aspects. So as bad as
it is, it's probably better than no bridge, which could be emulated by never
riding over that stretch of road.

A somewhat similar bridge over the Assabet river in Stow near Honey Pot Hill
Orchards is significantly better with bituminous blotches over the wood
deck, where the assembly likely becomes a composite structure that dampens
vibration and keeps much of the water out. The 'dead load' of the
bituminous undoubtedly reduces the 'live load' capability of the bridge,
which may be partly why Sherman's bridge hasn't been similarly treated,
though I'm sure the historical commission also has a say in the matter.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Sherman's Bridge

2021-11-15 Thread khablow
I once came on Sherman's Bridge on my bicycle several years ago as the
Wayland DPW was replacing some boards. I was told the bridge belongs to one
of the state departments, not either town, and the Wayland DPW gets paid to
do maintenance. Then I was told the provision for total re-planking is a
minimum of every 20 years. The last time it was totally re-planked was just
before the big flood. (What year was that?) The water in the Sudbury river
was over the guardrails of Sherman's Bridge. There is a house next to the
river on the Wayland side, atop a knoll. The woman there told me she was
kayaking out of her garage. Every bridge over the Sudbury was closed. Once
the water finally receded the wood planks all warped. Not only is the bridge
bad, neither town wants to do road repair on either side of the bridge,
especially Wayland. (Sour grapes intended. Sudbury has patched some bad
holes.) For those of us on bicycles, the wood bridge does eliminate all
truck traffic on the road.

[LincolnTalk] Russo's in Watertown is closing

2021-08-16 Thread khablow
A beloved market whose roots date back more than 100 years is shutting down.

According to a source, Russo's in Watertown is closing, with a Facebook post
  from the
Pleasant Street business confirming this, saying that "After more than 70
years working for the family business, Tony Russo is retiring. Our business
will close this fall. It has been Tony's privilege to serve our many
wholesale and retail customers for seven decades." Russo's, which started
out as a small farm in the early 1900s, is known in part for its extensive
selection of produce along with its meats, dairy products, baked goods and
pastries, and flowers and Christmas trees--and it also is a wholesaler to
local businesses, including restaurants.

The address for Russo's is 560 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA, 02472. Its
website can be found at https://russos.com/
