Hi List, Am designing a CD that will be shipped with the print version of an international medical journal. Challenges: - Extensive searching including word, phrase, proximity - Each article is abt 75 pages (in MS Word) - Tables of data needs to be represented - Final data will not be avail. until 3 weeks of market release - Greek / unicode characters to be supported Am currently using D 8.5. Am thinking of upgrading to MX. Can D be used for this? Will appreciate any thoughts from you all. I think this sounds like a job for Acrobat, rather than Director. It can do Greek, and most other widespread languages, with some effort, but not in Unicode. I've done similar things in C++ with third-party database packages, but I'd hesitate to do this in Director. Check into Acrobat, too--it can do a lot of the things you want. This is the kind of job the i´ve been doing for the past two years and using Director The point is, it´s not quite as simple as it looks, especially regarding documents in MS Word format. you should convert them to RTF first and even then youll have to do some arrangement directily in Director. Regarding the tables and images within the text. I use tables within RTF in Director and thay work just fine, but youll have to do some work before since once you import the table into d you can´t modify a thing within it, just the text but no way you can modify the formatting of the table itself. As for images what i do is link them to a different window (using MIAWs) with a hypertext link within the text so you can look at the picture while reading and close it whenever you like it. lingo-l Error I haven't seen before
Hey all, Sent out a gold master a month and a half ago, and now the client is calling with an error that's happening after duplication. The master I sent works on all of their PCs (14 or so). The duplicated disks do not. The error happens on launching the projector, and is The application can not start as it cannot create needed files. There may not be enough free disk space. Anyone gotten that before? Again, PC only, and I believe just 2000 and XP (though I'm not positive on that). Xtras are in an xtras folders on the CD, so there shouldn't be an unpacking problem with them. And, as I said, it only happens on the client's machines after duplication - but, the duplicator says he gets the error on some machines with the master. Still, the fact that it does not happen at all at the client's, then happens consistently after reproduction, points to the duplication. Have you checked a copy of the replicated disc against the gold master? I'd check all file sizes and dates to make sure they are the same. I'm assuming you have an installer that writes the app to the hard drive. I'd run an install from both the gold master and a replicated copy to see if there are any differences in the install. I had a similar problem once and the reason turned out to be quite simple: The client had made a copy of my master using some method that didn't copy hidden files. However, if I recall it right, some Acrobat installation stuff consisted of hidden or system files. That was the problem in that particular case. As the text is in MS Word format it can be exported to PDF and then using Acrobat ( the full version not the Reader ) cross linking, Table of Contents, searching, etc can easily be added. lingo-l Grammar parser in Lingo...?
Howdy all. Wondering if anyone's heard of a grammar parser behavior, object or script in Lingo. What I mean is something that can analyze the syntax of a given plain-english (!) sentence and break it down into the appropriate parts of speech: He went to the grocery store might be broken down as such: He: Subject went: Verb to the grocery store: Prepositional phrase to: Preposition the: Definite article grocery: Adjective store: Object of preposition ...and other such joys. Simple subject/verb/object or subject/verb/adjective constructions shouldn't be a big deal (Warren is insane) but for compound and complex sentences I'm not quite sure how to really begin the approach. Though in some ways the compound/complex parsing wouldn't really be all that different from the basic parsing; it would, however, have to know when it was looking at such a construction before it could break it into its smaller components. Obviously there'd have to be a dictionary as well that could recognize individual words and slot them into their likely categories based on context. That's not a big problem either (just tedious to produce). The idea is that this would be some kind of code that could be used to generate a pre-translation table of words, which would then be converted into another language. (That's not all that difficult to conceive either; it's simply an output generator based on the input... it's the input side of things that I'm most interested in...)
