RE: BUDDY API BUG -- NOOOOOOOOOOO!!

2004-10-11 Thread Chuck Neal
This may or not be related, but I have noticed that sometimes Buddy API
returns 0 for baFileExists() even when its there. Have not narrowed down
why yet (path length, folder depth, etc) but it may be related if the Xtra
uses the same function internally to validate files.

RE: Access Database?

ADO can do this. If you need to hit a server database for Mac and PC you
can use MUS and the ADO for MUS Xtra to connect. Since the server connects
and not the client its cross platform this way.

First, obsolete has never meant it won't work, just that its being phased
out.

Tell is not needed as Rob has shown you and LDMs, to my knowledge, have
never been a fully supported feature. Its one of those things that was
added in as a nice extra. I would certainly rather get a few half way
features than not have any access to them because they could not be fully
finalized. I have pages of things that I have used over the years that are
either undocumented or unsupported. You have to be careful, but sometimes
the reward far outweighs the risk.

I would like these items cleaned up a bit as well, but don't start attacking
the developers for this. They do a lot with the little they have. There is
a problem with MM ignoring Director (I would say it comes from the CEO
chair) but making attacks on the programmers is not going to help. Submit a
bug report or ask for a solution, but the fact is many people are using the
features you are complaining about just fine. Its simply a matter of
understanding how they work and how to get them working the way you want.

>well it sure as hell couldnt do any harm could it!

Yes it can hurt. The developers, especially Tom, have been great about
listening to the community. If all we do is badger them I certainly would
not expect them to keep being so helpful. :)

Is there a built-in way to do time arithmetic like you do date arithmetic?

I can get the number of days between two dates with something like
date(, mm, dd) - date (, mm, dd) (thanks to those who provided that
info last week). Now I'm looking for a way to get the number of minutes,
hours, or seconds between two times. The two times can be on different
dates.

If there's not a built in-way, or some old code lying around, I can figure
it out easily enough. If it's already out there, though, I don't want to
reinvent the wheel.

Cordially,

Hi All,

Am working on this project where I am displaying a number of wmv (video
files). My client want to somehow protect people from copying these files
off the CD/DVD. I am unable to find any tra that can take up an encrypted
stream (key based) and play the file! As an alternative I thought it may be
possible to add a copyright layer when producing the video and trying to
mask the layer in the wmv at run-time.

Any thoughts on this will be highly appreciated.

Hi everybody,

I have a baxic question about parent scripts.

Until now, a typical handler definition in a parent script of mine looked
like

on mWhatToDo me
...
end

and it was run like that:

me.mWhatToDo()

Now I have a handler that is called very often so that it would be nice, if
the handler name were very short. As short as possible that is.

This could be:

on x me
...
end

which could be run with

me.x()

Next I was asking myself, if the "me" could be omitted.

I tried

on x
end

and called it with:

x()

And it worked!

However I am sure there must be something wrong with it. There must be a
reason for the "me" after all.

Can anybody enlighten me?

Thanks!

Michael

Hey folks,

I didn't get a response for my Qs, but there were some big threads going. I
thought I'd try one more time:

2 questions. First, I've got someone else's projector on CD. It has a button
that causes a .mpg video file elsewhere on the CD to play externally, i.e.
in whatever video player the user has set for .mpg. I'd like to recreate
this, how can I make a sprite on my stage do this on mouseup?

Second, I have several video files that I've captioned using MagPie 2.0.
Playing the .mpg itself is sufficient to get captions in Windows Media
Player; it automatically finds the associated caption file. Real and
QuickTime must instead open a coordinator file in their own .smil formats to
view the video with captions. How can my projector tell the user's computer
to open an external .smil file with the appropriate player?

This is not Shockwave save, but the newer version of web Xtra would allow

Still would need some back and forth so it may not be ideal, but worth a

RE: Video Recommedations in Director

2004-06-09 Thread Chuck Neal
Oh, forgot one thing. :)

For size, it depends on the audience. If it's a kiosk and you control the
hardware, then full screen 800X600 video is very doable. For a broader
audience shoot for your lowest system spec and try to get a good file size
to quality ratio. Also with MPEG and QuickTime you can often play back a
video doubled in size with great results, just be very careful not to scale
it in an irregular way. 1 pixel smaller on the width will kill performance
on some codecs as the scaling is non-uniform.

At the moment we are using Sorenson video 320x240... however I have
seen some CDs out there that use dimensions of 400x300 etc...

Cheers,

RE: Video Recommedations in Director

2004-06-09 Thread Chuck Neal
Depends on the job, file size, length, compressor, etc. I use a lot of MPEG
as its cross platform and the least hassle overall. After that I would look
at QuickTime with Sorenson Pro, or for small size videos Flash files from
Sorenson Squeeze are a great choice. If you are doing a commercial app like
a game there are also some custom codecs you can use but they all require
installers, so not ideal for mass free distribution like corporate
presentations, etc.

RE: database lingo vs. xtra

2004-06-08 Thread Chuck Neal
I would use an Xtra. Director can search the data fairly efficiently but
with extreme limits. If you need to do things like multi table searches or
have a LOT of records it can bog lingo down. The ones I use the most are...

ADO - (I market this so just my disclaimer that I have a vested interest in
this one). Works great with standard Databases like Access, etc. Great if
the client needs to use an existing DB and keep it in its native format. -
PC only
Arca - Tabuleiro's Arca is really nice. Been using it for a few months and
its speed is great, easy to use and takes standard SQL. Inexpensive and
cross platform.
V12 - Also a good choice and is cross platform. My only negative is the lack
of multi table joins.
Valentina - Fast and effective. Also cross platform. There is good support
and a pretty active group of users. One added bonus for Valentina is that
it also comes in "flavors" for other languages like real basic, etc.

I have my own lingo "database" objects as well but generally I find that
they have too many limitations and the time to develop a good one is more
than the cost of a good DB Xtra. Once you have the Xtra it's a LOT easier
to just use it from then on out. Unless price is a huge issue on this I
would recommend the Xtra.

I'm thinking about just doing the project with lingo and perhaps
PropSave (and of course, some buddyAPI thrown in there for good
measure), but I wanted to get the groups response before I start-

Details:
the "database" will be updated by only 1 (or maybe 2) people ever. it will
contain 1200-1500 entries each entry will contain firstname, lastname,
storenumber,
images(anywhere from 0-5), other misc textbased fields

The client *really* only wants the application to keep track of these
images (he takes them throughout the year).
The client will use the data at the end of the year to make a "yearbook"
of images/quotes, etc...

Anyway, does anybody have any good reasons that I should just create it
with Lingo? or should I create it with V12 or one of the others?

Hi Guys,
could use a bit of advice as to what panoramic stitching software to take
the plunge with. I've been evaluating what i can this week and my results
have been mixed, with the demo versions, so i'm hoping that some of you guys
have been doing this for a while and can pass on your experience.
Our requirement is to do full 360 x 180 panaromas, with qtvr hotspot
functionality and to embed in director and also web pages.

i think we've narrowed it done to a choice of four.

1 - QTVR authouring studio, - unfortunately cant find a demo program, it
also appears like its not being pushed by apple very much and is quite old.
2 - realviz stitcher - currently our preferred pick, but the demo version
fatally crashes as soon as you select quicktime format for rendering export,
also its pricey and has no java player export for web delivery (am i right
in thinking that Standard Win XP has no Java VM and therefore xp users would
not be able to play these without downloading the java VM ?)
3 - 3dvista - sounds great with all the claimed capabilities and output
formats, but the demo crashes a lot and the results dont seem as as good as
realviz, anyone used the available xtra with this programs output ?
4 - panorama tools - nice and cheap, but we haven't been able to get as good
results for spherical panaromas as with realviz stitcher.
any thoughts/experience much appreciated

I can use BuddyAPI (BAFindDrive) in a projector to determine if the correct
CD-ROM is in the drive; to then either open a specified movie from the
CD-ROM, or alternatively, alert the user that the (correct) CD-ROM is not
available. Can I do something similar with Shockwave? I would like to embed
a little Shockwave file (looking like a "disk" icon) into a web-page as a
link to external movies to be stored on a CD-ROM (delivered to students to
use in conjunction with the web-site). My idea is to make it so when a user
clicks on this icon, it determines the letter assigned to their CD-ROM
drive, finds and opens a movie on that drive, or alternatively reports that
the correct CD-ROM is not available if this is the case. Essentially, I
want to make Shockwave files that work something like Quicktime Reference
Movies, but for Director files.

The problem seems to be that I can set the bupapi xtra to be included in
the projector, but not to be downloaded if required. So it seems that using
bubapi is not the answer, and I need to try and find another way of doing
this.
