Hi, I had same kind of propblems also. The error message was the same. It did not matter if the projector was made with 2K, NT or 98. The problem was with sounds. I removed all the puppetSound-commands and it worked fine. Now I have to find a way to get the sounds back but it's tomorrows problem ;) What is the best sound format for Director? What is the best command to play sound files? If you hve MIAWs in your movie, you must forget them properly. I had that same crashing symptom some time ago (in 2k environment) and it was because of MIAWs. Check them out! I've been authoring on Win2K for nearly 2 years with no problems at all...It's not Director and it's not Windows in general... it is something specific to your machine... Try narrowing it down some. There must be something in your projector causing the issue... Can you reproduce these problems with a bare bones project? You don't need to get a mac, just a different version of Windows. Windows 2000 is not a good platform to use for multimedia in general, because it wasn't created for that purpose. Get a copy of Win 98 Second Edition if you want a stable Windows machine (XP might work as well, but I haven't used it). Re: lingo-l Re: 8.51 Crashing in Windows 2000 (all Winsults accepted)
i think a more useful path might be to take the same project that's causing problems and try compiling it on a different platform. then see if the project still crashes win2k. is it only one project that's causing problems or can you take an old project and replicate the problem? are you watching memory or cpu cycles at any point? do you have a second win2k box that you tested on (your email seemed to allude that you already did this, but just to clarify)? Also, just a from experience deal, don't trust that windows update has the latest drivers for your hardware...go to the hardware manufacturer's sites btw - i had a similar problem about a year and a half ago on win2k -- i don't think i ever solved it (but was able to work around it) but when i moved on (stopped working on that particular project) all problems went awayi think i remember narrowing it down in that case to a really wierd fluke - (i was puppetting a bunch of sprites and after i'd puppet 60 or so, any time i'd puppet this one text box, everything would die)...anyway, i'm authoring in win2k today w/ no problems...knock on wood -Evan Charlie Fiskeaux II wrote: You don't need to get a mac, just a different version of Windows. I'm working with Win98 and i nearly never have Problems. Re: lingo-l Re: 8.51 Crashing in Windows 2000 (all Winsults accepted)
You could run Photoshop and Director together without a performance hit if you have a lot of RAM; what I like about Windows (OS X supposedly has dynamic memory allocation as well) is that you never get out of memory errors simply because you opened a 200 MB TIFF and don't have enough RAM allocated to Photoshop... But that doesn't address the crash problem, and I believe that should be addressed. It is quite possible to create apps in Director that do not roll over on Windows Me, for instance, and we all know what a stanky dawg that one is. Problem 1: I can run in author mode for hours on end without a problem...as long as I'm authoring. As soon as I run anything in author mode (for testing purposes, animation movement, etc) I've only got a few minutes before I receive an alert box: A fatal error has occurred. Director will quit now. This and your projector problems, Allen, I believe are completely related. You don't generally get this kind of stuff with single-movie projects, so I am going to have to guess at some things. 1. If you are navigating to other movies, do *not* use 'play movie'. Use 'go to movie' instead. play movie appears to retain a stack of all the previously opened movies in the application session, with the result that if you do it enough you will run out of memory. go to movie doesn't do that. 2. If you are dynamically adding, switching or moving Cast members, be very careful about how you get them in, how you remove them and so on. 3. If you are using MIAWs, DO NOT make them self-forget. Something like this in a close button in a MIAW: on mouseUp me forget the activeWindow end will kill your program almost instantly. Doing something like this: on mouseUp me tell the stage to ForgetTheWindow() end ...with the right command in your Stage will *also* kill your app. 4. If you are running MIAWs that play video (this used to happen all the time with NT and AVIs), don't let the MIAW close while the video is playing. Pause the video first. More details about what you're doing will, of course, garner some better feedback, but these are the major general gotchas I can think of OTTOMH. I am using Win2K and WinXP Pro and have had no problems with either environment. All of our production machines are Win2K that do Video (Premeire), Audio (sound forge), Flash, Photoshop, Bryce rendering, and Illustrator at the same time. Oh yeah and Director 8.5.1. I have had nothing but good experiences with Win2K and WinXP. I would suggest re-installing and then verifying all your drivers and making sure you have the latest updates for your drivers.
