True, she did say it was for Mac users. I had the impression somehow
that you had access to an OSX system. Mea culpa. :(

So in some cases it looks like a fast-start option really isn't an
option, unless one has not only a Mac handy, but possibly a Director as
well.

To be entirely honest I don't often see much use or call for fast start
of late. CDs are faster all the time, and Dir10 even lets you publish
with a splash screen image now so users get the sense that *something*
is happening during app load. I realize it's not much consolation but
it's something to consider.

All recent versions of Director let you use a splash image:
on Windows, if your projector is 'start.exe', place
'start.bmp' next to the projector, on Mac, if your projector
is 'start', place 'start.pct' (or maybe 'start.pic', I
forget which) next to your projector.

Yes; however it's only with 10 that it's officially supported. The
splash trick, for instance, does not work as expected on OSX using Dir9
(MX). The publish settings for 10 let you specify a frame for the
splash as well, which is very nice. It's good to see it officially
supported at last. :)

ok, that looks useful.

However, I have had no success when authoring for Mac from Dir MX 2004 on PC
while keeping the xtras external (ie putting the .data and .rsrc files for
each extra in an xtras folder next to the projector). It just don't work
for me, although I am limited in my ability to test as I don't have a OSX
machine in house, I have to rely on feedback from my client. I have been
able to make a Mac projector successfully by including the xtras in the
projector.

Do most people find it a straightforward process?

If you have access to a Mac, you can use this utility that I made. It

ok, looking up the corrresponding mac filenames in xtrainfo.txt helps a lot,
thanks.

The mac xtras are not binhexed in the PC installation
('..Configuration\Cross Platform Resources\Macintosh'), but each xtra is
supplied as two files, eg

SWA Decompression PPC Xtra.data
SWA Decompression PPC Xtra.rsrc

because PC's can't handle the dual fork nature of Mac files.

My project is uses very few asset types, and I suspect that some of the
xtras that director added into the 'Movie Xtras' dialog are unnecessary.
Does anyone know of a list that briefly describes the purpose of all the
standard xtras that ship with director? It would really help to know which
of the xtras are _really_ needed for distribution.

They'd go into an Xtras folder like the PC ones. As for which, most Mac
filenames should be adequate, but you can also have a look at the
xtrainfo.txt file to see where the Mac vs. Win filenames are different.

I don't know if the OSX Xtras for DMX04 have been BinHexed or not. If
so you;ll have to process them on a Mac before you add them to your

2004-03-02 Thread Mark Jonkman
Hi Joe

I'm not sure how you would do it, the libs and xtras for a stub projector
have the resource and data forks seperated out into different files that
must be reconstituted to work (at least that would be my interpretation. I
know that many xtra developers have figured out the method of splitting but
I'm not sure how to restore. I was hoping that Macromedia would have bundled
the libs and xtras in a seperate sit file that we could bring over to the
OSX and build up our shockwave projector there from the publish output
projector. That does not appear to be the case though. You can't use
Shockwave to get all the required parts as the release version isn't ready
yet and of course the SW folder won't have non-SW xtras in it. Otherwise you
could take the 4 lib files and the remaining xtras from there and then all
you would have needed are the non-SW xtras.

RE: lingo-l cross platform xtras in external folder

2004-03-02 Thread Mark R. Jonkman
Hi Joe

One other thought, if you have an OSX box kicking around, simply install the
trial version of Director MX 2004 on OSX, grab the appropriate libs and
xtras out of the install and use them for your shockwave projector. I'd back
up the entire xtras folder. The libs are hidden in the Director MX 2004
bundle so control click on the Director MX 2004 icon and choose show Package
Contents and browse the contents for the MacOS folder.. the libs are in
there.

That should solve your problem.

Sincerely
Mark R. Jonkman
