The five free-to-air television networks in Australia have never agreed on
much. But they have put their swords down temporarily to combat flagging
audience numbers with a “world-first” app.

The Freeview FV mobile app allows users (for free, of course) to view live
streaming and catch up services from the one place.

The app was launched this morning on iOS and Android, and starts off with live
streaming of ABC, SBS, Seven, Channel 9, Ten, One, ABC2/ABC Kids, ABC ME, ABC
News 24, 7Two, 7Mate, 7Flix, Racing.com, 9Gem, 9Go! and 9Life.

Other channels are expected to be on-boarded as soon as they start digital
streaming.

The catch-up, or video-on-demand, services for all five networks – SBS On
Demand, ABC iView, Plus7, 9Now, and Tenplay – are also accessible from the
Freeview FV app. However, this will be an app referral only and will require
the individual catch-up app to also be present on the device.

The Freeview FV app is designed to work on both iPhones and iPads, but for
Android users it is only optimised for mobile devices. Location services also
needs to be switched on the device for software to work.

Freeview, an alliance of the five free-to-air networks, has claimed a
world-first with its software. The industry has copped declining audience
numbers in the face of digital-only streaming services such as Netflix and
Stan; subscription TV providers such as Foxtel; and the fragmentation of
viewers through multiple free-to-air channels.

Fairfax Media
reported
in April that free-to-air television audience numbers had dropped 5% in the
year-to-date, according to figures from ratings agency OzTAM. Morgan Stanley
has predicted that advertising spend on traditional (non-digital) media would
drop from a peak of more than 1.3% of GDP in the mid-1980s to just over 0.2% by
2020.

“The Australian FTA industry has united to create and deliver a powerful mobile
consumer experience – in no other market has an FTA industry collaborated to
create its own live streaming app,” said Freeview chief executive Liz Ross.
Viewer numbers from the app will count towards ratings, as measured and
reported through OzTAM.

“This is a fantastic new way for people to enjoy TV on their terms and never
miss a thing, especially when they’re on the go. It’s great news for viewers
and we’ve worked hard to create a powerful, simple and user-friendly
experience,” said Freeview chief executive Liz Ross.

One major exception to free-to-air live streaming and catch up services are
sports. Most sporting organisations sell the digital streaming and
video-on-demand broadcast rights separately to the television contract, so some
events may not be seen through Freeview FV.

Ross said that the new app would appeal especially to commuters, as her
organisation sought to meet new viewer expectations for convenience.

The app also includes a TV guide, browse and search functionality for all
free-to-air programs, favourites and reminders, and program recommendations.

Freeview FV can already mirror to Apple TV using AirPlay. Business Insider has
contacted Freeview about any plans to support Google Chromecast.

I was looking forward to this app when I heard about it earlier. But, still far
too many holes in this thing for me. It requires individual apps per for each
broadcaster. I can't fit any more apps on my tablet, although I have kept SBS
and Iview. I tossed the others because they do NOT have all the programs
available, which was a disappointment. I use Chromecast as my connection to TV,
so that's out. Using by commuters and paying for the data streams on 3 or 4G is
insane. Not keen on them tracking my location either.

I don't understand that - are they saying iPhones/Pads are other than mobile?
Or that Android devices aren't mobile? It makes no sense.

Question: I don't see anything about the compression/quality levels, which
greatly impacts demand on networks and data usage for consumers.

These guys are scrambling. I reckon they should have waited until they could
actually have it work like a TV - you know, one channel selector and that's it.

Beyond this app, I did see that 7 is now streaming Live. Not sure about the
others. I just noticed an advert for a program with that designation yesterday.

2016-11-07 Thread Tom Worthington
I will be speaking on "Learning to Teach On-line with an E80 Blend" at
the ACS e-Learning Special Interest Group in Canberra, 5pm, 23 Nov 2016.
This is a free event, but you need to book:
https://ibs.acs.org.au/VWGEventEnrolment/Post.EventEnrolment.wgx?eventTrn=50368262105552

Summary: Tom Worthington reviews his last five years as a student of
education, studying at the Australian National University, University of
Southern Queensland, Canberra Institute of Technology and a North
American university. He suggests that university academics should be
trained in entrepreneurship, as well as teaching, to prepare them for an
uncertain future where they will have multiple careers working mostly as
part time casual staff.

Tom proposes Australian universities should be preparing for a E80 blend
of education: 80% e-Learning plus 20% classroom based. Notes:

[LINK] Off Topic: The Election

2016-11-07 Thread Stephen Loosley

America has flaws as deep as its founding, when, the men who laid down basic
principles of human rights were fed and clothed by human beings they owned.

That paradox still defines the fault lines of the nation, and it's along these
lines we are drawing the ugliest election in modern history.

It isn't just economic anxiety or trade deals or the opioid epidemic driving
our mostly white, mostly male movement that is behind Trump's campaign. It is
the existential fear of displacement from a world that has been chipping away
at white male supremacy.

The "grab 'em by the pussy" moment was disastrous for Trump's campaign; it
reinforced the defining narrative of his sexism. But it drew his strongest
supporters even closer to him, because it reminded them of the world they're
losing. They want to live in an America where they can grab women by the pussy
and brag about it to their friends. They want to casually use the n-word – just
for the bad ones; they're not racist! – without being set upon by the PC
police. They want what's coming to them, what's owed them.

And they are willing to burn down the world to get it.

Donald Trump is the worst major-party candidate for president in American
history. This is not a close call. By virtually any measure, he is unfit to
lead a Cub Scout troop, let alone the nation with the world's most powerful
military.

It's worth going back and reading the transcripts of his debates with Hillary
Clinton just to remember how he speaks when he's answering questions off the
cuff. It's breathtaking how incapable he is of forming a single coherent
thought.

The expectations for him were so low that there was little to no coverage of
his failure over four-and-a-half hours to say anything intelligent about any
issue important to the American people. He meanders, he interrupts, and he
whines. He is uninformed and unprepared.

Trump's values are, in a word, deplorable. He lies, constantly, about
everything. He stokes anger and fear and even violence among his supporters. He
nurtures their very worst instincts.

It is impossible to predict exactly how deep a disaster Donald Trump's
presidency would be, but there's no limit to the potential for horror. Think
how much we still don't know about Trump – and you can imagine the scandals and
corruption that lie in wait. Consider how thin his policy knowledge is and how
impulsively he reacts to insults, and imagine his twitchy little fingers on the
nuclear button.

Donald Trump cannot be president of the United States.

And while Trump has a considerable movement of supporters who see him as a
great conquering hero, who believe every word of his lies, no matter how
outlandish and easily disproven, there are many people, even at this late hour,
who are torn about whether they can support him.

But now is the moment for every last American to decide what it truly means to
be a citizen. You can be reluctant about Hillary Clinton. You don't even have
to vote for her.

What you cannot do is vote for Donald Trump. You must not pretend that this is
just another election, and he is just another candidate. It is your minimum
duty as a citizen not to support a racist, sexist, unqualified, dishonest,
corrupt manchild who celebrates everything that's ugly about America.

No matter how left out or left behind you feel, voting for Trump is nothing
short of a moral failure. It's a vicious act against the human beings, mostly
women and people of color, who would suffer miserably under his presidency.
It's an act of violence against America itself.

The promise on those red hats is to turn back in the other direction.

The greatness they sell is a lie.
