Program:

Topics

Scott Murphy will give a talk/demonstration of using a greaseweazel for floppy
data recovery.

We had a somewhat recent list discussion on recovering data from floppy disks
that realistically do not have current support or hardware.

The talk will be an absolute beginner's attempt to recover some of that data
and by “beginner's attempt”, it means I have not previously attempted to read
“foreign” diskettes from 40+ years ago, so this is a brand new thing for me to
try.

John Nash has a short talk on the annual burden of tax filing, PDFs, and using
pdftk. A usual, there are unanticipated challenges with even what appears to be
the simplest of things.

JF Messier may have an item to discuss as well. Assuming we have not run out
the clock at this point.

Re: [linux] 5.25" floppy reading

2024-01-17 Thread Scott Murphy
The greaseweazel supports 8”, 5.25”, and 3.5” devices.

The HW is inexpensive, but the floppy drive might be expensive, depending on
what you are looking for. This is a USB device and I have an older revision.

From the Canadian website that sells a fully built device for $34:

Keir Fraser’s Greaseweazle is a project for versatile floppy drive control over
USB. By extracting the raw flux transitions from a drive, any diskette format
can be captured and analyzed - PC, Amiga, Amstrad, PDP-11, many older
electronic musical instruments, and industrial equipment. The Greaseweazle also
supports writing to floppy disks. The design is fully open and comes with no
license encumberment.

Cheers,
Scott

Re: [linux] OCLUG meeting Thursday April 6th 2023

2023-03-31 Thread Scott Murphy
OCUUG (later Ocbug) was mostly social with occasional technical content. I
think it started as a technical group and eventually became more social, at
least that is my memory of it. I was not part of the early years.

The old website is still up, sporting my mock license plate: http://ocuug.on.ca

I may still have access to modify things, but it was a very long time ago and
might take me a while to locate the credentials.

Cheers,
Scott

[linux] April meeting announcement

2022-04-01 Thread scott . murphy
I really need to take 5 and reread before I send an email.

Meeting portion of the evening:

We have one talk scheduled so far. John will lead a discussion on "Video formats
and conversion” after the AGM portion is completed. There may be a second talk,
depending on available time. Topic “to be determined” at this point.

[linux] AGM + Meeting: 2022-04-07 @ 19:00

2022-04-01 Thread scott . murphy
Linux Ottawa Annual General Meeting - April 7, 2022

Meeting will be online via jitsi with the following link and code:

https://six.linux-ottawa.org/LinuxOttawa20220407

AGM portion:

Key business:
- election of board members
- reports on activities and finance
- discussion of priorities for Linux Ottawa activities
- discussion of group services and how to maintain them

Proxies: If you cannot participate, please send a proxy using the form
at the bottom of this email. The target number we need is 15 people/proxies.

Meeting background information.

Board: Several board members have other obligations and have decided
to step down. Tug Williams, Ian Gorman and John Nash have agreed to
stay on. That is a minimal quorum for the Board. We can definitely use
some more members to give wider experience and opinions.

Priorities for Linux Ottawa activities: It appears that the mailing list
is our most valued service and well-used. Our monthly meetings get reasonable
participation online (and previously in person). At the present, there is
uncertainty as to the wisdom of returning to in-person meetings from a health
perspective. Moreover, having set up the infrastructure for virtual meetings,
the Board has noted that arrangements for meetings are less effort than those
for in-person ones, and also cost less in financial terms.

Other activities -- for example a club distro, outreach activities -- have
had verbal support but no serious commitment of effort. Should we simply list
them as activities we will support as and when there is member buy-in?

Group services: We need volunteers -- preferably small teams -- to maintain
our services. We have a Linux Ottawa virtual server, so must maintain and
back it up. To simplify the operation, we present only our Dokuwiki instance.

Our mailing list is not fully standards-compliant. We had a member who
undertook to set up a Mailman3 list service. However, that person has stopped
communicating and we have not been able to determine the reason. With covid
and convoys, we reserve judgement pending more information. However, our
mailing list could use some work, and that will not happen without some
members stepping up to the plate.

We also welcome contributions to our monthly meetings. The format of one
or two topics with a presentation and discussion seems to work. The
presentations
do not need to be from an "expert", but are points of departure for increasing
understanding of different tools or situations.

Meeting portion of the evening:

We have one talk scheduled so far. John will lead a discussion on "Video formats
and conversion” after the AGM portion is completed. There may be a second talk,
depending on available time and availability. Topic “to be determined” at this
point.

This month is the annual scripting talk/open discussion. We have at least three
items lined up and are hoping for some scripting items from the general
membership, so feel free to volunteer a pet script or a scripting question.

Scripting is a pretty open topic, not just limited to shells, but any scripting
language is fair game. Maybe there will be something new that you have not seen
or considered before.

Call for participation:

If anyone is interested in doing a short ~5 minute talk on some scripting
aspect, feel free to let the secretary ( at )
know that you are interested so we can line them up. As mentioned above, it can
be about anything, something new you have discovered, a problem you are having,
etc.

Re: [linux] Issues, etc. from the video meetings

2021-04-03 Thread Scott Murphy
Yes it can.

As for Chrome, there were blog posts discussing that Chrome is the most tested
and recommended due to simulcast being enabled and stable. That was from a
while ago, so things may have changed. I know they planned on moving to a more
unified approach at some point, but I don’t know if they ever did it. We always
use the latest available in the jitsi repo, so there may be features and
support I am unaware of. While they stated Chrome, they probably include
Chromium based browsers in that as well.

[linux] Issues, etc. from the video meetings

2021-04-02 Thread Scott Murphy
A few items to attempt addressing ongoing commentary from the chat and mailing
list.

Poor performance on the call…

Having now had more video conference experience as a client and as a host, I
can state that using WiFi (on your computer anyway) seems to be a terrible
idea. The Jitsi client on my cell phone does not appear to have such an issue,
at least not that I have noticed.

I have also done Zoom, Ring, WebEX, and Teams meetings, all of which seem to
have lower reliability on a WiFi laptop than a wired one.

The “official” browser for jitsi is Chrome - the Jitsi website states that
explicitly. Other browsers do work, but your experience may be non-optimal.

If you have multiple browsers open and you try the conference from one of them
first, sometimes the microphone and/or camera does not get released to the new
browser. Kill the old browser and restart your new one. That usually fixes it.
Remember that in addition to the microphone and camera icons on the bottom of
the page, you probably allowed your browser access to the hardware. There is a
little icon in the URL bar that shows permissions. If you mess them up, you may
need to drop the conference and reconnect to reset those permissions.

Audio issues. I have not yet found that the server is the issue. Linux in
particular has so many ways of handling sound that it can be difficult to
untangle the variety of items. Just ask John about the fun with his music
player for the dance music. I have a few hardware devices I have to remember to
switch to the correct positions before my sound works and that is before I get
into software items.

Latency/video quality issues. I look at the bandwidth icon for all participants
and I have no idea why some people (me included) end up with a yellow or red
icon showing poor bandwidth. As far as I can tell, we all end up routing
through Front St. In Toronto. I have pretty good bandwidth and my connectivity
traditionally seems a bit poor. Last night, it seems great. One “fix” is to
adjust your video quality to low (in the bottom right hand corner pop-up menu
accessed via the three dots).

John has suggested that a subset of members may want to try some experiments
and document their experiences to help others. Let him know if willing to
participate. Expected level of effort = 1 hour to try Jitsi (via Framatalk and
Jitsi itself), Google Meet and Zoom.

The monthly URL ’secret’...

I’ll post it here since it was requested: LinuxOttawaMMDD

The club name with mixed case followed by the date of the meeting in year,
month and day format. Yesterday we used LinuxOttawa20210401, next month we will
use LinuxOttawa20210506. I don’t think that is particularly difficult to
follow, but I have been known to be wrong on many occasions and if people want
it changed to a fixed string, we can do that. I’m not in favour, but this is a
group issue and I will go with what people want.

I have been told that browser caching has leftovers from previous meetings in
the URL cache and if you don’t complete (and check) the full URL, it could
replace the URL you want by one of the old ones, so that may also be causing
some issues as well.

DNS…

Since the video conference server is only used for a couple of hours a month
and the existing VPS probably will not be able to host it due to resource
limitations, I use a short-lived VM from a hosting provider. I do not have an
IP address until I spin up the new instance and receive the new address. I then
enter it with the DNS service we have. It is usually live instantly via most
DNS services as the elapsed month has flushed it from most caches. I have seen
it not resolve a few times the past from some upstream systems and resolve from
others. In genera, it is live within a minute of getting the record, which also
has a 5 minute life span, so it should refresh quickly.

Chrome (and others) seem to have issues with cleanly accessing sites that they
have had issues with before, probably internal caching, some less than optimal
DNS code or a wealth of other issues (e.g. cookies) that we will likely never
know about. Try it in an incognito window and see if it works there. If not, do
a check on the command line. Try a different DNS service. Here is a list of
well known ones:

OpenDNS - 208.67.222.222
Cloudflare = 1.1.1.1
Google Public DNS - 8.8.8.8
Comodo Secure DNS - 8.26.56.26
Quad9 - 9.9.9.9
Verisign Public DNS - 64.6.65.6
OpenNIC - 13.239.157.177
UncensoredDNS - 91.239.100.100
CleanBrowsing - 185.228.168.168
Yandex DNS (Russia) - 77.88.8.7
UltraRecursive DNS - 156.154.70.1
Alternate DNS - 198.101.242.72
AdGuard DNS - 176.103.130.130

Video server readiness…

My bad here. Setup time always sneaks up on me.

I should have automated it months ago, but I was having a “it only takes 15
minutes” mental block. Yeah, it only takes 15 minutes if nothing else is going
on and I’m actually engaged in what I’m doing. I know better at work and have a

[linux] Resend: April 2021 Meeting & AGM - 2021-04-01 @ 19:00

2021-03-31 Thread Scott Murphy
Apparently I left the When line as March 4 in the previous email. For those who
pay attention, that has been corrected :)

When: Thursday, April 1, 2021
Time: 19:00
Where: jitsi video conference

The first part of the meeting will be the Annual General Meeting (AGM). As most
of you know, we are a registered non-profit and we are required to hold an AGM
where we perform elections. Quorum is 15 people and the format is short and
sinmple. This year more so than usual. If you will not be there, make sure you
send a proxy.

After the AGM, we will have our regular talks.

For those new to Linux, John has a talk titled: “Getting the software you want
installed”

After John has finished, Scott will do a talk on building the Raspberry Pi
based KVM he demonstrated at the March meeting as well as why you may want one.

Meeting Details:

The meeting URL will now be a fixed URL, https://six.linux-ottawa.org and
should be up for connection by 18:30 on meeting nights and will vanish shortly
after the meeting has concluded. The codewords that you need will also be
predictable so that you no longer need the email with them to join. Hopefully
you are on the mailing list so you will know the pattern. If not, it is in the
list archive and you just append it to the meeting URL. Since you will be
joining as anonymous guests, you will not have a username or password. If it
asks for a username and password, it has not been started yet. I will be
attempting to have it running by 18:45. It may be online earlier, but it should
be online by then.

Rules/Procedures/Common-Sense:

Video and audio will be disabled when you join. In order to make sure the
experience is a reasonable one for all involved, the presenter will share their
screen-window-whatever they are comfortable with and you will see it quite
clearly. Rather than unmute, pressing your space bar will unmute your
microphone while pressed, so you can try that to ask questions. There is also
the chat window, which no longer appears to obscure the rest of the session
(maybe on small monitors?) Feel free to post questions and as opportunity
presents itself and the presenter notices, they will get answered. After the
presentation is completed, feel free to unmute and have a normal voice/video

Re: [linux] using laptop as wireless access file server / Gramps ideas

2021-03-27 Thread Scott Murphy
Check out the Raspberry Pi Pirate Box or the Library Box. I did a talk on the
Pi version at Algonquin a few years ago. It may be exactly what you are looking
for. There have been a few derives since then.

It appears that the pirate box is no longer maintained, and there are a few
alternatives. Maybe freedom Box is the answer. I don’t know how good it would
be without an Internet connection, as it is designed to work as a community
mesh network. Again, it may serve for what you would like.

https://wiki.debian.org/FreedomBox

This may be a gook place to get additional ideas: http://nethood.org/links/

Our monthly meetings have been getting close to this number, so it appears to
be a
Reasonable number. Please either attend or send your proxy.

The current slate is:

Tug Williams

We don’t have much to discuss, as we have been virtual for a year now:

[linux] March 2021 Meeting - 2021-03-04 @ 19:00

2021-03-04 Thread Scott Murphy
When: Thursday, March 4, 2021
Time: 19:00
Where: jitsi video conference

Just a reminder that the first part of the meeting will be concentrating on
those new to Linux as a way to get people started.

For those new to Linux, John has a talk titled: “Decisions when setting up a
new system”

The second talk will be a demo from Scott on the Pi based KVM over IP mentioned
during the last meeting and if there is sufficient interest, a future talk on
building one, why you might want one and a host of expansion ideas.

And we have a third talk from Tug titled: “Choirs of Covid: What if your thing
is live collaborative music?”

(maybe on small monitors?) Feel free to post questions and as opportunity

presentation is completed, feel free to unmute and have a normal voice/video

Re: [linux] Motherboard Layout Poblem

2021-01-16 Thread Scott Murphy
A bus extender may work, however they can cost money.

In addition, if the graphics card in the PCIE16 slot covers the PCIE1 slot, it
is also possible that when the PCIE16 slot is in use for a graphics card, the
PCIE1 slot next to it is not usable. I know that is true of my recent
motherboard. You should check your manual and see. In that case, you are
probably stuck with the PCI option or a USB solution (and higher end ones are
more expensive than the PCI option).

[linux] January 2021 Meeting - 2021-01-07 @ 19:00

2021-01-02 Thread Scott Murphy
When: Thursday, January 7, 2021
Time: 19:00
Where: jitsi video conference

Happy New Year to all!

Welcome to the new year and a newly reworked meeting item, getting started with
Linux. We have decided to attempt to formally add some "new to Linux"
information at the beginning of the meetings for the first few months of 2021
and see how it goes.

This material may also be of help to those who use linux but can benefit from
more information that is hopefully presented in a way that is friendly to
non-technical users.

As was mentioned a message or two ago, we want to try a getting started stream
as we expect there are a number of people who really don’t know how to get
started and as a result, can’t even formulate what they want to ask since they
are not sufficiently familiar with the system to do so. In order to provide a
jump start, we are going to take a few people who are “new to Linux” through
picking a distro from a very small set (to keep solutions similar), get them to
install it, and them get them comfortable with using it. We will document the
process and build an intro doc from it as something that can be referenced on
the wiki. There can be additional modules later on specific tasks, such as
backups, maintenance, upgrades, etc. Input will be welcome.

Well, that is the intent anyway. We will see how it goes and adjust as
necessary.

How will this affect the normal meetings?

The object is to work on the new program items as the first part and have a
second talk to follow on a different, more general, or related topic, possibly
in more depth. January will be a little different, as we have a second talk
proposed by JF to discuss setting up a distro, which I believe he had suggested
Ubuntu. This works well, as we were considering keeping the choices to Ubuntu
derivatives.

2020-06-29 Thread Scott Murphy
When: Thursday, July 2, 2020
Time: 19:00
Where: jitsi video conference (details to follow)

As per our new normal, we will utilize jitsi for our meeting.

This month we have two talks, a main one and a follow-up to last month.

The talk will be an energetic op-ed on the failure of design methodologies from
Tug. Prepare to be entertained/appalled/etc. I do not know the details and
think the mystery is more of a draw than the details would be.

The second one will be much shorter and is a bit of a follow-up on the talk

[linux] June 2020 Meeting - 2020-06-04 @ 19:00

2020-05-31 Thread Scott Murphy
When: Thursday, June 4, 2020
Time: 19:00
Where: jitsi video conference (details to follow)

The video conference from last month seemed to go well, so we will try again
this month.

We will go with jitsi again, and the talk will be about spinning up a jitsi
server using a disposable cloud service for the server, hopefully with a demo
one being spun up so we can potentially change over to the second one as a
functional test. The URL and code words will be emailed around 18:30 so there
is a potential for some social time prior to getting started.

Similar to last time, your output video and audio will be disabled when you
join. In order to make sure the experience is a reasonable one for all
involved, the presenter will share their screen-window-whatever they are
comfortable with and you will see it quite clearly.

There is a chat window, but when it is active it obscures part of the screen.
Feel free to post questions and as opportunity presents itself and the
presenter notices, they will get answered. Just in case they are ignored for
too long, there will be an appointed chat moderator, so if the questions start
piling up, they can unmute and interrupt the presenter in order to answer the
questions. After the presentation is completed, feel free to unmute and have a
normal voice/video Q

Cheers,
Scott

Re: [linux] Reminder: May 2020 AGM & meeting - The Open Source Edition. 2020-05-07 @ 19:00

2020-05-12 Thread Scott Murphy
I can. I was going to go over the whole thing as a talk for the next meeting.
It went better than I had expected as well. at peak, we were at 26 viewers and
other than some audio clipping, it seemed to work very well. This was also
hosted on a cloud provider with a Toronto presence, so the server was in their
Toronto data centre. If we can get people to wait, I’ll go through the whole
thing at the next meeting. It will be kind of meta, as I can build one live
while we watch on another. There are also a couple of extras that I didn’t get
to play with, as I had other things keeping me busy.

[linux] Reminder: May 2020 AGM & meeting - The Open Source Edition. 2020-05-07 @ 19:00

2020-05-06 Thread Scott Murphy
This is a reminder email about the AGM and Meeting tomorrow evening

The previous email had May 8th in the subject. It is May 7, just in case you
are having issues tracking days under the current social distancing and group
restrictions.

Also, in case you need reminders for the IRC meeting location:

Secure IRC: ircs://irc.oftc.net:6697/oclug
Regular IRC: irc://irc.oftc.net:6667/oclug
Browser URL: https://webchat.oftc.net Pick a nickname and join #oclug

When: Thursday, May 7, 2020
Time: 19:00
Where: irc://irc.oftc.net/oclug

The AGM v2.0

Given the commentary on the list and lack of turnout for the AGM in April, we
are going with IRC for May.

To at least pay lip service to the AGM requirements, we need 25 people who are
online to direct message our secretary with their email address either before
or during during the AGM.

If that doesn’t work, we will try something else in June.

So rather than spend time writing things out at the AGM, we have the same
people willing to be in the board. If someone else wants to be on the board,
feel free to self-nominate prior to the AGM, or at the beginning of the AGM.
There will be an opportunity to do so.

A single item for voting on at the AGM:

1) Reduce the size of the quorum for an election. Given how much begging we
have had to do in the past to get the 25 names, I want to reduce it to 10. If
we can’t get 10 people to attend the next AGM in person, then we have little
reason to continue as a registered non-profit corp. That is a potential
discussion item for the future. We consistently get 10+ people at physical
meetings but not always 15. That makes 10 a reasonable number to manage.

After the AGM, we will have a “normal” meeting. Given the uncertain state of
future meetings, I am thinking that we will end up on an open source platform
for meetings for quite some time yet. We are going to use jitsi this month for
the talk portion. In order to make it easy for the presenter, the service will
be moderated. The info will be given on the IRC channel after the AGM.

How we will manage this herd of cats...

Your output video and audio will be disabled when you join. In order to make
sure the experience is a reasonable one for all involved, the presenter will
share their screen/window/whatever they are comfortable with and you will see
it quite clearly if the test we did are any indicator. Since we do not know how
many will be viewing, it will be a little hard to manage questions, so if you
have them, feel free to ask them in the chat window. Since the person doing the
presentation will not be reading the chat window, the moderator will read the
questions out.

This should keep it manageable. After the representation is finished, I’ll stop
muting all but the presenter. We can even try enabling video to see how
good/bad it is. There will only be the one talk this month, as we don’t know
how well it will go.

This format is subject to evolution, as I expect that video conference software
will undergo some rapid improvement over the next few months given the demand
currently out there. Not that I’m recommending them, but I saw a note that Zoom
is currently processing just shy of 280PiB of data/month. I have no idea what
services like Netflix and Disney+ are processing, but the demands have gone up
considerably.

In June, we may give big blue button a try. That take a little more effort to
install than jitsi, so I went with the easier of the two for the first attempt.

Assuming the video meeting goes well, we will return to our normal schedule of
the first Thursday of the month @ 19:00, conference to be open earlier than
that for Q, ending by 21:30. Some of us may have to be up early.

Cheers,
Scott

Re: [linux] AGM -- NOW!

2020-04-09 Thread Scott Murphy
Yes, there is a browser interface as well. Might even be linked on the screen
somewhere.

Sorry for missing the meeting, I fell asleep. It has been a long week with
early days and late nights. We will use IRC for the next attempt, so I suppose
it could be done pretty much any time, but it would be easier to do it at the
beginning of the next meeting.

There are a lot of IRC clients, given that is has been around forever (1988).
Having a few weeks before the next meeting will give people time to get a
client and attempt connecting. I will add a wiki item that has the details,
although it is probably already in there somewhere, maybe in multiple places.
This will be linked on the main page.

[linux] April 202 meeting & AGM - sort of...

2020-04-08 Thread Scott Murphy
Just to let you know officially, the physical meeting is not happening this
month.

I’ve been a bit busy over the past few days so I didn’t really get a chance to
get this email out sooner. I’ll claim general tiredness as the culprit.

So.. our AGM.

We have been having our board meetings over Slack for the past while and while
I am ambivalent about it, it does have a nice interface and we are using the
free tier, so it is not costing us. We could have the AGM via slack tomorrow
evening at 19:00. This will not be the normal forum for future meetings, just a
temporary measure.

There won’t be too much to say other than we have as many people willing to
remain on the board as we had last year and if anyone wants to self-nominate,
feel free to do so.

If we meet up electronically tomorrow, as in I expect the board will be online
and if we get sufficient people, we will have the election. Assuming we go
forward with it, we will need some method of “making it correct” since we can’t
meet in person, so the membership requirement is that be registered on the
mailing list. If you decide to join up for the meeting, you can private message
the secretary wit the name you are using on slack and your email address. We
will probably want to propose a bylaw change to handle something like a
pandemic and social distancing, as I doubt we will be meeting in person any
time soon.

As for future meetings, I am going to see if I can get a server running one of
the open source systems like jitsi or big blue button running. Once it is
available, I’ll send a message for some testers. I don’t want to overload it
immediately, so I need to add people to the point of unsuitability. As long as
we can handle 20 people, I’ll be happy. If it handles more, that would be great
(maybe 50?). I’m trying to keep the costs down, but I may need to use an
external service if I can’t host it reliably myself. In that case, it would be
run on one of those containers that you spin up and use for a few hours and
then destroy. These are early days yet, so we will see where it goes.

On the plus side, we will probably have more people attend meetings (if I have
the capacity).

Takeaways:
- AGM over slack if enough people connect:
https://join.slack.com/t/oclug/shared_invite/zt-deoisagj-gb5h5RU_UdgnVQj~CmDKYA
- We will attempt a video meeting for May and have some trials prior to that.
- Assuming the video meeting goes well, we will return to our normal schedule
of the first Thursday of the month @ 19:00, conference to be open earlier than
that for Q, ending by 21:30. Some of us may have to be up early.

Cheers,
Scott

[linux] February Meeting: 2020-02-13 @ 18:30

2020-01-27 Thread Scott Murphy
Location: We will be in the Centennial Library, starting at 18:30.

We will be in this location for Until August of 2020 (so far). The Centennial
Library is at 3870 Old Richmond Rd. in Bells Corners. Bus routes 88, 9, and
256 are listed as servicing that area. Note that we will be done by 20:30, as
this library closes earlier than the other location.

Reminder:

Our AGM is in April. If you do not expect to be there, please provide a proxy
so we don’t have to keep announcing it if we do not have a quorum. Proxy
instructions are below, along with a sample. We can also handle an additional
board member so if someone wants to be part of coordinating the group,
self-nomination is permitted. Send an email to:

  secretary linux ottawa org

with your nomination. The target number we need is 20 people/proxies. This has
been close in the past and we would like to only do it once.

Discussions:

- James Romeo will be talking about backups and the broader topic of business
continuity. This will be an interactive session and everybody is encouraged
to participate. There is a good chance you will learn something you never
  considered before.

- Tug Williams will be giving a talk on IIO. This also should provide some new
  insights and ideas for everybody.

- The “Managing your Laptop with Ansible” talk by Scott Murphy will be in March.

We also have to set and tear down, so we need to finish a few minutes early to
be out of the room for 20:30

There will be a half hour pre-meeting item from 18:00 to 18:30 for people who
are new to Linux, have general questions, or wish to help out with people just
getting started.

After the meeting, there could be an optional social event at one of the nearby
pubs or restaurants. A short discussion and vote as to location will be taken
then.

After the talks, there will be the opportunity for a GPG key signing. This is a
monthly offering, just look for Scott after the talk and we can go from there.
Bring some kind of photo ID and some keyslips if you expect people to sign your
key. If you need some method of creating pages of keyslips, there is an online
slip generator available at http://openpgp.quelltextlich.at/slip.html

Note: New speakers welcome. If you have a topic or know someone who may have a
good topic for a meeting, feel free to suggest it to the board.

-
Proxy Instructions…
-

Proxies can be registered by sending an email to either John Nash (john dot
nash at uottawa dot ca) or Scott Murphy (scott dot murphy at arrow dash eye

prior to the election. The email should be in the form of the example in the
bylaws, replicated below:

Discussions:
- Scott Murphy will talk about provisioning your personal systems with ansible.
- Robert Day and John Nash will lead a discussion on using git

We also have to set and tear down, so we need to finish a few minutes early to
be out of the room for 20:30

There will be a half hour pre-meeting item from 18:00 to 18:30 for people who

getting started.

Re: [linux] How are the oc-linux meetings announced, or is there a master schedule?

2019-10-31 Thread Scott Murphy
Typically they get announced when I remember to announce them, as well as when
I have info to post. This one could have been announced a few days ago, but I
was waiting until tonight to send the email.

Sometimes we don’t have a speaker until a day or two before, so I could have a
generic meeting announcement, but that is the same as saying that we have a
meeting the first Thursday of the month.

I refuse to use meetup, as it has become painfully expensive to use. You pay by
persons signed up, so if a few hundred sign up, we are on the hook for more
cash than I am willing to spend. We had one and when it started to cost real
money, we stopped using it.

I can do something a little simpler though. I can add a calendar to the site.
It is easy enough to do, as I use if for another group. I may have set portions
of it up already, I'll have to check. Anyway, there will be a subscribe link
there that provides an ical and other subscription. I could even make it sit on
the front page of the web site and have things link back to the wiki. More
thought needed here, but there are only so many hours in a day and I have
reached saturation. I expect it will get a little calmer soon, but right now
I’m rather busied out.

So for the next meeting, expect the email and website updates to happen tonight.

Re: [linux] Thinking of giving away some Git courses/seminars to promote my classes

2019-10-29 Thread Scott Murphy
I’m up for adding a git talk to the November meeting. I’m doing what I expect
will be a shorter ansible talk about using it to configure your laptop,
workstation, or whatever. I doubt it will be a two hour talk. I suspect that
the main points will be covered in 30 to 45 minutes.

Re: [linux] Newbie help request

2019-07-13 Thread Scott Murphy
I’m hoping you ran across the instructions for rEFInd on Rod’s site:
https://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/index.html

There is a section on getting it to work on macs with and without the SIP.
Since you mentioned Sierra, you should use these instructions:
https://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/sip.html

You will need to repartition your hard drive though, as there is no place to
install an additional bootable OS. You should dedicate a partition to each OS
just to keep things clean. Assuming you have lots of free space, decide how
much you want to keep for macOS and then add partitions that are the size you
want to use for as many Linux installs you want to play with. If you have a GPT
disk, it supports 256 partitions, so you are probably safe.

Make sure you leave some free space on your mac partition or you may have
issues with available space if you boot into macOS.

Assume you will be using at least 20GB/Linux install.

Make a backup before you start playing. Use something like SuperDuper or
CarbonCopy Cloner to make a bootable image on an external USB drive. You can
always boot from that later and it can act as a source for a restore.

Have fun!

[linux] To complement the ZFS discussion at the last meeting

A somewhat timely article.

While not Linux, the principles should be the same. As a warning, I have not
tried this so I can’t state that it works exactly the same way. If you think
this is a useful idea for you, experiment first. Maybe a VM first.

- Some ideas for future talks

Discussions
- Building on one of the ideas for future talks, Scott is going to talk about
getting started with Linux, specifically what needs to be covered in a guide
for new users. This will be a discussion format, as we have people who are
still getting started and may have better ideas than those who have been at it

If anyone else is interested in being on the board, feel free to self-
nominate no later than April 2nd, 2019. If several people are willing to
come on board, a few of us are willing to withdraw our intent in order to
get some new blood in. Just so everyone is aware, four board members is
sufficient, six would be better in case of circumstances requiring an
existing member to step down.

In addition, according to the bylaws of the non-profit corporation, we
require at least 20 members people to be present, either in person or via
proxy. We will have a sign-up sheet for the election and will require all
present to sign in order to prove the election was held in compliance with
the bylaws. If we do not have the requisite number of people/proxies, we
are required to repeat this at every future meeting until we do meet the
criteria. If you are not going to be there, please register a proxy. To
meet the member criteria, our official member roster is this mailing list.

Proxies can be registered by sending an email to either John Nash (john dot
nash at uottawa dot ca) or Scott Murphy (scott dot murphy at arrow dash eye

prior to the election. The email should be in the form of the example in the

Re: [linux] Is there an OCLUG-related place where I can advertise local training?

2019-03-29 Thread Scott Murphy
Hi Robert;

There is nothing to stop us from having a list of local tech resources on the
wiki. I’d be happy to add a page that has other groups, training, etc.

Maybe a link and a summary of what it is.

[linux] March Meeting: 2019-03-07 @ 18:30

2019-03-03 Thread Scott Murphy
Location: We will be in the Centennial Library, starting at 18:30.

We will be in this location for The first half of 2019. The Centennial Library
is at 3870 Old Richmond Rd. in Bells Corners. Bus routes 88, 9, and 256 are
listed as servicing that area. Note that we will be done by 20:30, as this
library closes earlier than the other location.

Discussions:
- Wireguard Talk
  - WireGuard is an open-source software application and protocol that
implements virtual private network techniques to create secure point-to-point
connections in routed or bridged configurations.
  - Presented by Qingwei Zhang
- Quilt Talk
  - Quilt is an open-source software application for patch management. The
basic idea behind quilt is to maintain patches instead of maintaining source
files.
  - Presented by Brenda Butler
- A “Hot Topic” if there is time

We also have to set and tear down, so we need to finish a few minutes early to
be out of the room for 20:30

There will be a half hour pre-meeting item from 18:00 to 18:30 for people who
are new to Linux, have general questions, or wish to help out with people who
are just getting started.

Remember, we have elections in April. Feel free to self-nominate for the board.

[linux] Update: One speaker unavailable tonight

2019-02-07 Thread Scott Murphy
Our main talk speaker is in Toronto and will not be able to speak tonight. We
will reschedule him for next month with Brenda’s presentation.

So we have an open topic session as well as Tug’s short talk. If anyone has
something they would like to present, here is a golden opportunity.

This month we are having a cou[ple of talks:
- wireguard, presented by Qingwei Zhang.
- A short presentation by Tug on a product he is working on. This is a stab at
the elevator pitch.
- A “Hot Topic"

- Since we have a somewhat shorter evening and we have to take a few minutes to

Re: [linux] Hardware sources?

2018-12-03 Thread Scott Murphy
Pretty much any modern hardware will work with an up to date linux. As long as
you are not trying to do anything graphics intense, you should be fine. If you
want high performance graphics, then you need to check compatibility a little
more closely.

If you are more familiar with the tweaking necessary, pretty much anything that
is made today can run linux. Some hardware will require you to get the drivers
from windows to make it work, so that could take a while to get configured
correctly. If you are building your own, just check all the hardware
compatibility in advance.

Cheers,
Scott

This month we are having a scripting talk.
- This is “language neutral”, so if you script in something obscure, that is
fine, maybe even fantastic!
- There will be at least three script discussions from board members and anyone
who attends is welcome to showcase a
script or ask questions about a scripting problem they are having. Attendee
participation is encouraged.

Hot Topics: Open Discussion, assuming we have time.

[linux] Reminder: LITW 2018

2018-07-13 Thread Scott Murphy
This year LITW will be held at Strathcona Park on Sunday July 15 @ 13:00
(1:00pm) rain or shine.

This is a casual, family oriented event. Bring kids, significant others,
devices, laptops, battery operated projects, or whatever suits your fancy.
Bring some food to share and a fun attitude.

The board will bring a cooler of pop/juice/water, some paper plates, utensils,
paper towels and anything else we think would be a good idea.

If you are planning on attending, please RSVP to the board with a count of how
many people you are bringing so we have an idea as to how much to bring.

Looking forward to another successful LITW and we will see you there!

Yes there is, but I have not posted it yet. We are in a different building this
time and the room does not show up on the room finder.

There will be details shortly.

2018-05-20 Thread Scott Murphy
The archives are at https://lists.linux-ottawa.org
. The footer has the wrong link and has been
fixed.

There is a prefix setting, which I added last night, as well as a supposed
footer which did not show up in the message from last night. I have looked at
the file and it is effectively the same as the one for my test list which
attached it properly. Still playing, but at least the prefix is working.

I can also add a custom header for filtering purposes, but I’m not sure what I
should set it to at this point. Maybe:

List-Id: Linux-Ottawa Discussion List

I’ll configure that and we can see if it shows up. This new system is a bit
minimalistic, so all of this is configuring additions. Is anything else left
out that should be there?

There is also a footer filter that is supposed to strip out footers, but I have
not messed with that. It is an alternative to the receive program, so I have
not looked at it yet.

Re: new mailing list issue

2018-05-11 Thread Scott Murphy
That would be the down side of subscribing everybody silently.

You should be able to manage everything by visiting
https://lists.linux-ottawa.org

There will be instructions there for the two existing lists. The mailing
address remains linux@linux-ottawa.org and as it is not mailman, there are a
few things that are different (well, all of them). I can add a footer, I had
one on the test lists when I was configuring it and completely forgot to add
one here. Assuming I got it correct, there will be a footer in this response
with the above link in it.
