Re: RHEL 6.5 on z/VM 6.3 Installation via FTP Errors

2014-04-17 Thread Kyle Stewart
Thanks Mark. Yes that is the result of small staff, too many hot projects and
not enough time. I work across z/OS, z/VM, Linux on z. That is not an
excuse, just the reality. Thanks for your help.

Is there another pace I might find the ftp logs?

This might sound overly harsh, but if you're running a server offering a
network service, you should either
- know where the logs for that service are located
- what looks normal in those logs and vice versa, and
- looking at them occasionally,

or you should _not_ be running that service on that server. It really is
pretty important.

RHEL 6.5 Installation GUI Errors and No Options for Partitioning

2014-04-17 Thread Kyle Stewart
Hi Folks,

I am trying to install RHEL 6.5 via FTP (I have done 5.5 6.2 last
year successfully.) I am using an ftp server and thanks to Bruce Hayden, I now
get a fully functional Linux. However, it used to be that before the installer
would format the drive and install Linux, there would be a GUI that would give
options for partitioning-sizes, mount points, etc. and packages to install and
so forth. I don't see that this time around I need to make changes here
before the install continues. After I quit the installer or let it finish, the
underlying text in the window appears and indicates there is some problem with
the GUI as follows:

login as: install
Welcome to the anaconda install environment 1.2 for zSeries

/sbin/xauth: creating new authority file /root/.Xauthority
detecting hardware...
waiting for hardware to initialize...

Running anaconda 13.21.215, the Red Hat Enterprise Linux system installer -
please wait.
21:35:32 Starting graphical installation.
21:35:35 Exception starting GUI installer: could not open display
21:35:35 GUI installer startup failed, falling back to text mode.

I have Xming installed and X forwarding in Putty. What am I missing here?
Thanks for your help, in advance.

Best Regards,

Kyle Stewart
