Oh, definitely. For sure :) As soon as we jump in we'll grab the latest...

Great to know.

Ok, so we'll leave the defaults then - at least for the OS stuff.

Thank you Mark, as always, for your feedback!

Are there any distributions that package this kernels?

No, because there is no logical connection between the Linux guest and the CMS
guest. Linux has no way to know that the disk contents were changed.

Only by using NFS can Linux see a changed file, and that file would be an SFS
file.

Is there any way that we can make changes or create a file on CMS and
access the changes on a cmsfs-fuse directory already mounted? It looks like
the data is not refreshed on Linux and I have to unmount vary the dasd
offline, vary online and mount again to see the changes.Any suggestion would be

Not Linux 4.5, no, but as that page says, there's no new functionality for z
Systems included in 4.5. In general, new functionality is back ported to older
versions and included at Service Pack/Update boundaries. In the case of SUSE
SLES12 SP2, we're actually upgrading the kernel to version 4.4, but that
doesn't happen every time.

Re: SLES 11 SP4 - Kernel locking up

2016-08-18 Thread Ponte, Douglas C. (JMD)
Yes, we can confirm similar strangeness had occurred after applying the kernel
patch and restarting, on servers with 32-bit apps.

Four were patched with the 24 Jun, 2016 (the Linux Kernel 12631 s390x ) kernel,
and one did not have the runaway CPU issue (and debug console spit upon
initialization). That lucky one did NOT have any 32-bit apps running. Also had
a Tivoli mon server that complained about 'socks' upon startup, although sans
the same debug spit seen on the two with 32-bit apps (Mainview and ConnectDir).

Saw the new kernel patch come out in August (SuSE never got back to us on that)
via their patch finder (download) website. Applying the kernel patch in our
next patching round, so hopefully it was resolved as SuSE support says.

Thanks Marcy. I have a bunch of servers with this kernel level. Do you know if
it limited to specific 32 bit applications or all?

It's not out yet.
You'll need to contact SUSE for a PTF.
I was told it is 987099 in Bugzilla.suse.com But I don't seem to have access to
that.

Yes, we saw it and someone else here did last week too.
SUSE has a test fix for it.

Has to do with running 32bit programs. ILMT was the one that we discovered it
with.

Subject: [LINUX-390] SLES 11 SP4 - Kernel locking up

Hi everyone,

We're having some kernel locking issues after installing the latest kernel for
SLES 11 SP4 (kernel-default-3.0.101-77.1). This is on two separate Linux
guests and it happens - right away- after starting some network
applications: Linux completely freezes. If we go back to the previous kernel
everything runs fine.

I've opened a case with SUSE & we'll be uploading a z/VM dump of the guests but
wondered if anyone else has seen this before (recently)?

Thanks!
