The real paper copy of the BSD system administration set had a good
tutorial on permissions; I don't know if the online copy ever got that
stuff added. The O'Reilly Unix books have a good tutorial.

Re: FTP Win/2000 to Linux

2005-04-15 Thread Eric Clapsaddle
I'm not sure about the underscore m but a common occurrence is that Windows
puts a CRLF character at the end of each line. It displays as ^M.
There are a number of different ways to get rid of this.

Open the file in vi and enter :g/^M/s///gCreate the ^M by pressing
ctrl-v then enter.
Use a sed replacement script similar to the above syntax.
Change the Windows ftp client to not append anything.

I'm trying to ftp an ascii file from Windows/2000 to Suse 9.0.

On the Linux side, I edit the file "joe user.diskmap" and out on the
extreme right hand side, I have a column of upper case M with an
underscore under it.

Obvouisly, some sort of cr or lf character.

But I can't seem to have the file sent without it. The client doesn't
have many options:

ftp> help
Commands may be abbreviated. Commands are:

! delete literal prompt send
? debug ls put status
append dir mdelete pwd trace
ascii disconnect mdirquittype
bellget mgetquote user
binary globmkdir recv
verbose
bye hashmls remotehelp
cd helpmputrename
close lcd openrmdir

I can send the file up to VM without the extra character. When I send
a file from CMS to Linux, I also get the character. It seems that the
character might be put in by the FTP daemon.

I am using vsFTPd 1.2.1 on Linux. Obvious that there is an option in
the vsftpd.conf file, but nothing stands out. Does anyone know the fix
to this yet?

Thanks

Just out of curiosity, how many people are managing their Linux servers
from a Windows workstation? How many from Linux workstations? How many
from others?

The reason I ask, is that I could never (and would never) use PuTTY to
manage more than one Linux server. I've become completely dependent on
Konsole's ability to "spray" the input from one session to multiple
sessions. Along with its Profile support, I click one icon and have 60+
sessions open, login to all 60+ servers at once, make my change to all
60+ servers at once, logout, go to a movie, come back to work and tell
the boss I just finished.

PuTTY's maintainer has official stated this is a worthless feature that
will never be included in PuTTY.

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/wishlist/terminal-fanout.html

To stop the flames, I use PuTTY when I have to and love it for that.

Re: even more sles9 install weirdness

2005-01-20 Thread Eric Clapsaddle
I kinda went around the README file and found a way to work using ftp and
ssh.

I had to mount cd 1 at /zlinux/cd1
mount cd1 again at /home//zlinux/cd1
then mount cd2 at /home//zlinux/cd2
cd3 etc.

I think it's because the first time it takes the full path that you give
(in my case /zlinux/cd1) and the second time it takes a relative path from
the users ftp directory.
When it asked for the second disk I clicked on the show details and changed
the remote directory to /zlinux/cd2

Thanks to all that have blazed the trail of sles9 before me.
I have followed this thread pretty close and have used the installroot
procedure to create an installroot for my CDs. I can start the install,
get into yast, setup the DASD, and then I change my software to Minimal
install. But when the install starts it asks me to mount CD1. OK, just
repeats the request for CD1. Anything else and the install ends. Has
anyone run into this before? Maybe I screwed up the ISO part.
