Re: Workload move from z/OS to z/Linux
What I was alluding to was that a zAAP will run anyone's Java code (or a subset) but for work to run on a zIIP you have to know/code something specific to gain access to it (or at least this was how it was explained to me). The first implementer was DB2 and now I believe CA has some stuff that can use it (probably after a licensing agreement with IBM?). Ken Porowski -Original Message- Fargusson.Alan I think the zIIP is more generic. At least it can be used for DB2 and/or Oracle and perhaps other DBs. The zAAP can only be used for Java. -Original Message- Ken Porowski Wouldn't the code needed to support a zIIP or zAAP have to be added to Linux and available to all? I would think that this is a 'trade secret' for IBM and one they would prefer to control/license as they are with zIIP for z/OS workloads (zAAP appears to be a little more generic). Ken Porowski -Original Message- Ted MacNEIL can't see what would prevent a mix of IFL+n*zAAP+m*zIIP LPAR from running linux How about: it's not supported -- there is no code in zLINUX to (a) recognise zAAPs zIIPs, and (b) run anything on it. (unless, again, there is too much stuff stripped from the zAAPs zIIPs that would prevent it from running general purpose threads). There is -- that's the whole point. Not IPLable. Re: Workload move from z/OS to z/Linux
-Original Message- Ted MacNEIL What I was alluding to was that a zAAP will run anyone's Java code (or a subset) Yes, but the dispatcher has to know how/when to direct a sub-task to the zAAP. It doesn't happen just because you have JAVA and a zAAP. If I have a zAAP and are at appropriate levels of z/OS and JAVA (and whatever else) to support it and configured appropriately and I have JAVA code that 'could' run on a zAAP and I don't have to change my JAVA code to make it zAAP eligible then isn't that the same as it 'happen just because you have JAVA and a zAAP' ? I am assuming that I (sysprog or applications) don't need to do anything to specify what work is zAAP eligible and that if I am configured correctly (hardware and code levels) whatever is zAAP legible will attempt to use it. but for work to run on a zIIP you have to know/code something specific to gain access to it (or at least this was how it was explained to me). No. There are no application changes required. It's all in the dispatcher. But is it documented specifically (and free other than a z/OS license) what meets the eligibility requirements or does (CA for example) need to work with IBM and possibly change code (either CA's or IBM's) to allow a new exploiter (e.g. CA-IDMS)? -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
Re: 3490E Tape Drive End of Service
Cross posted to IBM-MAIN and LINUX-390 And does anyone know of any supported 3490E drives (standalone or 3494 library)? We have 3490-F1A's in a 3494 and just prior to dropping support we had a failure. It took about 2 weeks to find a replacement part. Actually it was for the controller. We are starting a forced migration but will need supported drives for a couple of years at least. Re: DB2 ON Linux zseries/390
IIRC z/OS.e runs in a 'normal' engine not an IFL. It does have its own pricing which is less than z/OS but there are some restrictions. DB2 and other products should be less expensive too. Not sure if the engine cost is any different though. -Original Message- Steve Gentry Please note, I wrote z/OS.e note the e This is a version of z/OS that will run in an IFL and thus take advantage of lower pricing (according to IBM). I'm neither for or against this option. It was something that IBM presented to us as an alternative along with zLinux under VM in an IFL. -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390

Re: Linux zSeries Presentation
True, the SHARE presentations also look very similar to a session at the System z9 and zSeries Expo (10/9-13/2006). I was looking for the LinuxWorld presentation specifically because it was given by their Chief Architect and (unfortunately) that would probably carry more weight with management. The SHARE and Expo presentations do add some information so I would combine all of them when presenting it to my management. I have been in touch with Rick Barlow at Nationwide (he gave the Expo presentation) but he doesn't have a copy of the LinuxWorld presentation. I have the podcast of the LinuxWorld presentation but no foils to go with it. If you have another contact in Nationwide that would be most appreciated. Thanks Ken Porowski -Original Message- Post, Mark K I can contact the guys from Nationwide to see if they can send you a PDF version of the slides. But, I don't know that this presentation will tell you anything that the ones from SHARE don't cover. http://linuxvm.org/Present/#share107 sessions 9212 and 9213.
