Re: Redbooks Rumor

2021-10-29 Thread Terry Madge
Unfortunately I can confirm that it's true. So many techies rely on these
Redbooks that are far more in depth and informative than any standard IBM
manual has ever been!

Send a complaint to your nearest IBM Rep!

Subject: Redbooks Rumor

I am hearing strong rumors that IBM is about to commit the type of corporate
facepalm that is the stuff for future textbooks. Apparently Redbooks are no
longer going to be a thing and the organization disbanded. If there’s one thing
that has differentiated IBM in the mainframe space has been the quality of its
documentation and, in particular, the type of HOW-TO information contained
within Redbooks and Redpieces. These documents turn a “that’d be nice to do”
into a proof-of-concept and finally into production. In doing so, they must be
responsible for millions or billions of dollar in revenue to IBM.

Many of the topics of Redbooks cover are complex and even intimidating. They
provide a step-by-step approach to learning and implementing using a group of
people actually doing what they’re writing about. This is invaluable.

I hope these rumors are untrue but if not I think we should all be shouting
from the roof until someone with some sense realizes how shortsighted this
decision is.

Neale

I do not know where the CCW 0x66 comes from. The bootloader only uses 0x06,
0x41, 0x42, 0x43 and 0x63 for FBA.
Also I was unable to reproduce this issue on my system but one of our tester
reported he was able to do so.
I will try to investigate what happens.

Bizarre. How does a device go from active to not operational? No messages on
the z/VM operator log?

Ubuntu under z/VM Installation / IPL problem

2016-06-15 Thread Terry Madge
My colleague has been attempting to install Ubuntu under z/VM and has created
the 4 files required to IPL under z/VM CMS for the first time;

INITRD
KERNEL
PARMFILE
UBUNTU EXEC

When he attempts to IPL by issuing L C02UBU2 BY MAINT, he is prompted by the
boot menu and it then goes into a disabled wait state.

The disabled wait state indicates an inability to start the subchannel to
continue the IPL, does anyone have any ideas what may be causing the problem?
Is there an option during installation that should have been taken? This is
being IPL'd using a V7000 , not DS8000 ECKD disk.

This would probably be better asked on the IBMVM mailing list, but I'm guessing
it has something to do with the topology/polarization settings on your z/VM
