And just a very few people tested wether the howto is reproducable. But i think it is a good starting point, if someone is interested in this topic. Please drop me a mail offline, if you are interesed to get a copy. And i am very interested in getting some response back, wether it worked or not. Hi Lu, let me try to understand your setup: 1. system z9, with Ficon Express 4, z/VM is version 5.4, z/Linux is SUSE 11 SP1 2. using 4 virtual NPIV enabled zfcp adaptors - 3. connecting via four paths via switched fabric (not point to point) to DS8000 4. 20 Luns, each accessing via 4 paths system z fcp device FCP switchDS8000 WWPN20 LUNs Linux+-- 3300 ---5005076308034621-+-40004000...400B LXCPOA +-- 3F00 ---5005076308134621-+-40014000...4007 +-- 4300 ---5005076308084621-+ +-- 4E00 ---5005076308184621-+ Correct? Please check the following: 1. Are all 20 LUNS member of the same Volume Group on DS8000 ? 2. You have to define host connections on DS8000 from that volume group to each affected (NPIV-)WWPN of system z 3. The switch must have NPIV enabled. And please check correct Port setting on the switch (most likely F_port) - both depends on your switch. 4. You have to configure a zoning on that switch, for example in that way that you have to add to the same zone ALL affected system z WWPNs and all affected DS8000 WWPNs that want to connect to each other. If it does not work: please try on a fresh system (or remove all zfcp udev info and reboot) the manual setup with zfcp_host_configure and zfcp_disk_configure. Re: Largest DASD Volume to Use with RHEL 5.3 under z/VM 6.1
Hi Marcy, another option to be considered is to use SCSI devices under z/VM. You might define a large SCSI LUN and address this - including multiple paths to that device - like a DASD. More information can be found in z/VM docu here: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/zvm/v6r1/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.zvm.v610.hcpa5/edev.htm And by the way, Linux also supports DASDs with more than 65520 cylinders, but this is afaik not yet supported in RHEL5.3 (These DASDs are referred to as Model-A). Re: NPIV known problems?
Sue, when NPIV is switched off, the zfcp adaptor has a single, general WWPN for each virtual adapter (on the same PCHID) Now, if you turn on NPIV, your FCP host adapter gets a bunch of different, new WWPNs for each virtual adapter (LPAR/VM guest). Thus, these new WWPNs have to be configured in your SAN switch - or you encounter the problems you had. After that, san_disc is a good tool to proceed with. Re: Datacenter Move
Hi Russel, if your IP address remains, there is no need to change the default gw. But: Besides your mentioned two steps you should also delete the following file: /etc/udev/rules.d/30-net_persistent_names.rules since it would cause to stick eth0 to your old address triple of qeth devices, while the new address triple would be handled as eth1. If you remove this file, however, it will be automatically recreated during first boot, and your new address triple will become eth0. Who is using zfcp attached SCSI devices?
Hi all, I'm curious and would like to know, who is using zfcp attached SCSI devices. If you like, please answer the following questions: 1. Type (Manufacturer/Model) of the SAN Gateway/Bridge 2. Category, Type and number of attached SCSI devices (e.g. SCSI Tapes, DVD drives, disks) 3. Your experience with the SAN gateway (configuration, reliability) 4. How often do you use the attached devices (daily, rarely, ) and for which purpose Authentic example: 1. IBM 2108-G07 SAN gateway (aka PATHLIGHT) 2. 1x SCSI-DVD-ROM, 1x IDE-DVD-Multiburner via IDE-SCSI-Converter, 1x 4mm DDS3 SCSI Tape 3. easy to configure, runs without problems 4. regularly, for system z Linux installations via SCSI DVD (no ftp server required). Re: Who is using zfcp attached SCSI devices?
Hi Rick, hi all, thanks for your responses so far. To be a little more precise: I meant your environment behind a SAN Gateway/Bridge, not natively attached zfcp devices. With kind regards Thorsten Diehl System Test Linux on System z IBM Deutschland Research Development GmbH Vorsitzender des Aufsichtsrats: Martin Jetter Geschaeftsfuehrung: Erich Baier Sitz der Gesellschaft: Boeblingen Registergericht: Amtsgericht Stuttgart, HRB 243294 Richard Troth schrieb am 07.07.2009 16:32: We use SAN attached disk at my shop. I should refrain from indicating which vendor (in this context) because I should not convey some kind endorsement. We do not presently use SAN attached tape nor CD or DVD. The devices are connected via switched fabric (yet another vendor used for the switches), both production and dev/test. The production volumes are replicated to secondary copies for disaster recovery. (dev/test vols are not replicated) The production volumes are in demand 24x7 so we lean heavily on the dual path capability: When one path is taken down either for service or because of an error the other carries the traffic. (This is a customer-facing workload.) Once things are configured, they run without problems. If you are using SLES 10, you will want to be on SP2 for improved SCSI stack behavior. We encountered periodic filesystem errors resulting in some filesystems being switched read-only (to prevent damage) on both VMware hosted i386 and x86_64 and z/VM hosted s390x Linux guests with SLES 10 SP1. (I cannot report on this problem on RHEL. Not enough data there.) I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that people considering SAN look into EDEV where z/VM will present SAN disks as 9336 equivalent FBA DASD. This allows the storage to be managed via the CP Directory, so that your SAN backed storage can be managed as effectively as your ECKD backed storage. We could not take this route initially because at the time EDEV lacked dynamic path controls (presently an open req with IBM). As a result, we plug our Linux guests directly into the fabric. This has some value points, notably reduced I/O overhead, but presents a serious storage management burden. Vendors: Mixed IPL from installation media would be nice. What I mean is, if a disk is attached via SAN, support the SAN IPL method, obviously. But if a disk is attached via EDEV, also support the DASD IPL method. The two should coexist quite well on any CD or DVD. Clearly the 'zipl' bootstrap already contains everything that is needed. Using an ISO 9660 filesystem gives ample room for the bootstrap. -- Rick; On Tue, Jul 7, 2009 at 09:34, Thorsten Diehltdi...@linux.vnet.ibm.com wrote: Hi all, I'm curious and would like to know, who is using zfcp attached SCSI devices. Hi Mark, well, my wording was not precise enough. Thus I just changed the subject. I'm not interested in the details of the commonly used fibre channel attached (switched fabric) environments, but in the setups where customers have (Ultra-)SCSI Devices attached via a SAN Gateway. Re: SUSE 9 on Mupltiprise 3000
Hi John, one very common mistake is to enter an incorrect number for the relative port. - Please read my previous intructions very thoroughly. Usually the relative port 0 belongs to the TCP/IP enabled adaptor that is used by OS/2. The next adaptors (as listed in mpts) get the numbers from 1 incementing. Which kind of adaptors do you ahve installed? If you have Ethernet adaptors, there is another trick required to change the ethernet protocol from IBM to DIX and to assign the slot numbers.
