Re: Linux Applications

2011-06-01 Thread CHAPLIN, JAMES (CTR)
Linux has an endless source of free games and applications you can
install on the servers, but that would be a waste of good resources. For
working tools, look at Perfkit for zVM as a starter on performance. Play
and learn Linux, use http://www.google.com/linux for all your questions,
it's great, or visit http://linuxvm.org/ for a good read.

Does your shop have any applications on distributed systems that a Linux
based demo application can be ported over to your z10BC platform? Des
your shop use Oracle on other platforms, it works great on zLinux.

As part of our upgrade from a z890 to a z10BC our VAR threw in an IFL,
Zvm/Linux and support to sweeten the deal. Although we do not currently
have a business application for Linux we have zvm and 2 linux servers up
and running for a learning experience and grins. We are running zvm 6.4
and RH5.6

My question is what are some tools or 'nice to have items' that can be
installed and used to benefit the company at this point? I am looking
to learn the environment and expand the roll of Linux on the MF here if
possible. Thanks

2011-06-01 Thread Dean, David (I/S)
If you are a Windows shop, do some SAMBA file sharing - impresses the windows
folks. We also threw in initially a db2connect server to consolidate myriad
distributed servers. You should read some cookbooks on building servers and
streamline the creation process. We turn a lot of heads with the fact that we
can hand over servers in a matter of minutes while our windows' team takes up
to two weeks. We keep a couple sitting around, and hand them out as needed.

2011-05-31 Thread Bauer, Bobby (NIH/CIT) [E]
I'd suggest going to RH6 first. There are enough differences to make a
migration non-trivial. We are running RH6 in production and it has had no
problems. The biggest hurdle was the different methods v6 uses to do the same
thing v5 did.

Re: Linux Applications

2011-05-31 Thread Thomas David Rivers
Well...

We like to tell people they can move their z/OS C/C++ compiles
and assembly jobs to z/Linux using our tools. Moving the compiles
from z/OS to z/Linux can save a lot of z/OS cycles, which can
 save the company $$$.

So, if you have some C/C++ in the shop - that's something to
 really consider.

I used OpenGrok to build a full text index to application source code. It is
much loved by the developers.
