Re: NFS Help - RHEL3 Linux client, VM server

2004-07-01 Thread David Boyes
I searched all five z/VM 4.4.0 TCP/IP manuals for vmlogin and
vmlogin.c, but got no hits. MOUNTPW is a C program on
TCPMAINT 592. There are some other C programs on that disk,
but nothing with a name remotely like vmlogin.

Yes, it's the same. The function is to supply a VM login name and
password to pass to the CMS NFS server to get an effective UID for NFS
to use to access files. The MVS version is (or was at one point) called
mvslogin, and I may have brain faulted on the name.

You need to compile and run mvslogin/vmlogin.c which are provided with
the CMS NFS server. See the VM TCPIP Planning and Configuraiton Guide
and the VM TCPIP Users Guide for all the gory details.

To connect to the VM NFS server from our Linux servers we use MOUNTPW and
MOUNT.

You can find all info about using VM NFS on the IBM VM website:

I do not know about the mvslogin/vmlogin that David Boyes mentioned.

Well, it beats sending the authenication information on the mount, and I
prefer a defined standard over mvslogin or mountpw.

You have 3 choices with VM NFS:
- include your VM credentials on the mount request (not recommended since
they will show up on showmount requests)
- PCNFS login as is done by many Windows clients
- Using the mountpw command (downloaded and built on your system).
mvslogin can, I think, be used instead, if you wish.

PCNFS is really the best way to do it, if there's a PCNFS client available
for Linux.

Remember, too, that the VM NFS server doesn't give a rat's behind about
your Linux UID/GID. It will use the VM UID/GID associated with your VM
user ID.

NFS Help - RHEL3 Linux client, VM server

he recommends using the cred= parameter in /etc/fstab. I don't believe this is
available in RHEL. At least I'm not familiar with it and it doesn't appear in any of
the man pages for nfs, mount or fstab.

Can someone point me in the direction I need to go to get my RHEL3 NFS client to

2004-05-13 Thread Post, Mark K
On that same slide, you'll see mention of an mvslogin program that talks
to your NFS server's security system. I believe that is needed with the
z/VM NFS server as well. I believe David's reference to 'cred=' is related
to that in some way, but I don't have any information on anything like that
in /etc/fstab except for NFS mounts, just SMB mounts.
