New Virtualization Cookbook for z/VM 6.1 and SLES 11

2010-02-12 Thread Michael MacIsaac
Hello lists (cross posted to linux-390 and ibmvm),

Marian Gasparovic and I are pleased to announce a new "cookbook" entitled
"z/VM and Linux on IBM System z: The Virtualization Cookbook for SLES
11". It is temporarily at the top of the page:
http://www.vm.ibm.com/devpages/mikemac/

The PDF weighs in at 4.5MB and 236 pages. The associated tar file is only
17KB.

There was no funding/support for this to become an official IBM Redbook,
so we updated it "on the side". It is currently on my z/VM developer page,
but we hope to finalize it on linuxvm.org/present (if Mark ever finishes
his promised review :))

The changes to this book are:
-) The z/VM sections are updated for V6.1
-) The Linux sections are updated for SLES 11.
-) The REXX EXEC and XEDIT macro to help modify z/VM system labels have
been removed as it is recommended to change the system labels at z/VM
install time. For reference, the section on relabeling system volumes is
slightly modified to describe performing the steps manually, without the
REXX EXEC and XEDIT macro.
-) The "Servicing z/VM" chapter has been updated for z/VM 6.1 and now
describes IBM ShopzSeries, not IBMLink.
-) The Linux system that does the cloning is called the cloner, not the
controller.
-) A section on the X Window System has been added.
-) The penguin on the cover representing the golden image was given a
gold jacket :))

Some sections are removed in the release of this book:
-) In Miscellaneous Recipes chapter, sections on LDAP, NTP, rsync and
CMM were removed in the interests of time.
-) Details on creating a travelling /home/ have been removed, however, a
section with words of wisdom, based on a linux-390 append by Patrick
Spinler, has been added.

Thanks to all who helped to make this project possible (see list in
Preface).

Feedback is welcome on or off-list. Enjoy - you can't beat the price! :))

Great to see a new version of the "cookbook" come out but I'm disappointed that
"There was no funding/support for this to become an official IBM Redbook".
I used the Redhat version of this book to install and configure z/VM and Redhat
about a year ago and was amazed that I was able to create a working system with
numerous linux guests in just a couple of days. My z/VM and Redhat knowledge
were rudimentary to put it kindly yet I was able to create a working system
just by following the instructions. We've moved on a bit since then but I
still refer to the book quite often for the various recipes that it contains.
I recently had to use the SUSE version of the cookbook and was similarly
impressed. I consider these books to be invaluable resources and think it
would be a real shame if they aren't funded and/or supported in the future.

I have to be honest and say that the Linux and z/VM community has for some
time had the collective expertise and resources to turn those Redbooks
into community-maintained documents (e.g. Wiki). Users, IBM, Novell and
Red Hat can all contribute.

And I have always considered the Redbooks to have (to some degree) the
imprimatur of IBM - and hence elevated credence.
Surely this is why IBM offers (er, offered ?) residencies at all ?.

One only has to look at the change in emphasis in the residencies over
the last few years to ascertain where IBM apparently sees its future
business coming from.

The IBM development paradigm is that we document what the product *does*.
How it operates, what the interfaces do, what messages it generates, etc.
IBM product documentation is relatively poor (IMO) at explaining how to
tie it all together and make it *accomplish* something, not just sit there
and look pretty.

It has been the ITSO that has traditionally tried to fill that gap and
provide a point-in-time look at how to be productive and not waste *too
much* time reading books and inferring the blueprint. The whole
blind-men-and-the-elephant thing. It should come as no surprise that this
actually helps people adopts the new technology faster, and *that* has an
effect on the bottom line.

They are snapshots of the technology, meant to explain and encourage use
of new things. But they are not product publications and can quickly get
out of date. It is relatively rare have both the funding and an
interested author who is willing to update and re-publish a Redbook. We
have been lucky with Mike & Co. and the ITSO up to now. But the free
ride, as it were, had to come to come to an end eventually.

Every year the ITSO sends out a request for ideas. They select ideas from
the list and schedule Residencies, produce Redpapers, or update existing
Redbooks, They have to balance the number of projects with their size,
complexity, and the availability of authors and the resources (e.g.
machines), not to mention funding. When belts are tight, the ITSO has to
make tough decisions.

But I suspect that the ITSO is not done with the Cookbooks and that, like
Frosty the Snowman, they will returrn to us some day with a new set of
Cookbooks. But I think it would be Way Coolerl if the ITSO could simply
update the Wiki.

Personally, I would like to thank *all* the Redbook authors - and
certainly Mike & Co.
I happen to think the Cookbooks are a fine effort.

Then we get back to the same old issue with wikis - authoritative
updates. Were users to be using such an article, they could justifiably
feel severely pissed off were it to have been incorrectly updated, and
they were led astray.
Comes back to that Redbook "credence" I mentioned.

I'm sure there are ways around it, but I remain to be convinced.

I cannot agree more. Especially for this kind of book. It is a step by step
guide, where each step depends on previous steps. We really did every step and
tested it. You cannot do anything like this in a wiki, you need authors to
access the same resources. Just getting a machine for such a project is not
easy, we were lucky Mike could get his hands on one for some limited time.
In wiki, you can have consistent parts, but not a consistent book. Not to
mention tested book.
Of course the cookbook is not perfect, there are many areas Mike would like to
improve, other areas I would like to improve, but given the time constraints
and resources...

It helps if you go to redbooks site and give comments, they come to
management...
