Re: vale openSolaris

2010-08-17 Thread David Boyes
Oracle is apparently closing down their
 support for OpenSolaris.

In fairness to them, they are closing down support for their own binary
distribution of OpenSolaris (eponymously and confusingly named). They still
refuse to make any official public statement on the future of the OpenSolaris
project (other than the leaked memo, which can be trivially disclaimed as
not official).

Also (like Greek), the emphasis is on the penultimate syllable, moving to

Re: vale openSolaris

2010-08-16 Thread David Boyes
Any comments from this august assemblage ?.
I suppose David has more reason than most to feel umbrage.

Without getting myself back on the front page of the Register correcting
technobloggers, I would still point out that Oracle cannot take away the source
they have already released -- they don't own all the rights to it (for once,
the CDDL actually does something positive). OpenSolaris on Z is still engaged,
but at a much reduced priority while we see what plays out. The Illumos/Nexenta
effort appears to be serious enough to merit additional discussion of what to
do next -- at least we no longer need the closed source libi18n to build the
OpenSolaris kernel, and they seem to be making good progress on the kernel lock
manager and crypto bits that were the last remaining closed source bits. I
might even release the Power code if they actually get those two pieces done.
The new instructions in Power7 are actually very helpful for writing operating
systems.

As for Oracle, well, meh. I don't have much incentive to contribute anything
back to their project(s) or recommend their software, that's for certain. It's
really too bad that IBM muffed the Sun purchase, but ... yeah. C'est la vie. Es
geht wie es geht. No matter -- I have plenty more good ideas. After all, I
haven't messed up IBM's marketing strategy and message for at least 6
months 8-)

Could someone expound a bit on what vale openSolaris refers to, for

Thanks.

I did see a news item on a (dutch) website where it states that Oracle
stops the OpenSolaris in favor of the new Solaris 11. It also points to
a memo on

I kept wanting to get involved (non-z), but didn't see the effort being
rewarded long-term. Even the devs that were at the kernel conference I
was on when the acquisition was (formally) announced were not confident
Oracle would continue the effort.

Thanks for the note, JohnI knew I should have taken Latin in school
instead of that FORTRAN IV course.

The leaked memo that Berry v S. points to sheds more light on the
issue..in short, at Oracle the open source development model has
now been axed and OpenSolaris is officially now dead.

As I understanding, Oracle are asserting that Dalvik, Google's JVM,
infringes on various Oracle patents. The talking points advanced by
various Oracle supporters appear to be that by performing an
independent re-implementation of the JVM, rather than buying the
terrible J2SE JVM (which Sun never open sourced), Google have stolen
Sunacle's valuable intellectual property.

Since it's an independent reimplmentation, based on bits of the
Harmony project, itself an independent reimplementation, patents are
the only weapon Oracle have in this case.

The fact Oracle appear to be going after someone for selling a
Java-based product without giving Oracle money ought to give RedHat,
IBM, etc pause. The FUD it hands Apple, Microsoft, etc, will no doubt
be very handy for them.
