Bear in mind that RH is targetting (mostly) Windows users on ia32/amd-64
systems. I wouldn't expect too much difference between SLES and RHEL on
those kinds of hardware.

Both RH's and Novell's users can do things those on Zeds cannot, most
notably run Windows guests. And, quite a few times here; I've seen
questions about this or that package that is shipped prebuilt as
binaries for Linux (but only for intellish systems).

Now, if someone wants to take aim at Linux on Intellish (or Power or
Sparc if you wish) vs Linux on Zeds, I'm here to watch!

The implication is that these represent the leading edge of virtualization,
completely ignoring z/VM's capabilities. This happens time after time,
conference after conference and webcast after webcast. It's almost like z/VM

It may be that there is more revenue to be made from that platform.
Selling subscription/support on a per IFL basis is not as lucrative as
targeting the mass xSeries market.

One can assume that they are in business to make money. The non-zSeries
markets are the easiest way to achieve this.

Re: Virtualization with the Best TCO?

2010-08-24 Thread Richard Gasiorowski
This is smoek screen. they do not include facility costs, middleware,
network and support.

1) If they include they ONLY included the power NOT the ambient cooling.
Sysz - 5Kw and none
2) BIggest savings is middleware - more virtual servers per unit (harware)
equals less in license costs
3) With out crypto you are looking at a backbone network savings (behind
the wall) of 30 to 40%.
If you include crypto its even greater cuz now there is an elimination of
bandwidth and firewall appliances
4) With zLinux I can update the kernel once for an entire LPAR or with DSS
one common read only Oracle SQP library that effects all prodcution
servers on the LPAR.\

How do I know this - been doing that fight daily for the last 4 years at
the company I work for. There is a reason they do not include System z -
plus the more servers the better the TCO or ROI.
