Re: Redhat Linux6.o for athlon
Hi Perry. > My personal preference is for Redhat 6.0, not 6.1 (the GUI > installer is lame for old timers). Personally, I use RedHat 6.1 with its text mode installer, which is available as standard - if you read the instructions on the boot menu screen, you'll easily find it... It sounds like most of you on this list use Redhat. (Thanks for your comment about the gui installer -- I fit the class that would prefer 6.0.) Does any one know of a linux list that I can subscribe to? I was able to get a Slackware 3.2 installed but the only time it would let me access the cdrom was when I booted from floppy. So I bought a disk (for the support?!?) -- the latest one being Slackware 7. The ONLY successful thing I was able to do with it was boot from the cdrom (on the business Win98 machine!) -- and I still couldn't read the man pages! I have a 486 and a 386 - both with 8mb RAM that I am trying to get Linux on. I am looking forward to ELKS getting network support so I can resurect my 86 machine. > >If you get an athlon, you're going to be paying for floating point performance, >and not neccessarily everyday speed. RE: Redhat Linux6.o for athlon
Perry, I do not believe that a Celeron is faster that a Pentium III. There is a difference in cache architecture. - Note: I could be wrong, but that's the way I remember it. I have 2.2.x patches but they arent generally available. > If you get an athlon, you're going to be paying for floating point performance, > and not neccessarily everyday speed. The Athlon is faster on both integer, memory bandwidth and fpu, but a celeron isnt that much slower and is a lot cheaper.

Nima, Although your comments are off topic for this list, there is no reason to unload some linux zealoutry on you ;) The Athlon should run Linux fine. It doesn't have any optimizations from a kernel standpoint, but that'll come in time. My personal preference is for Redhat 6.0, not 6.1 (the GUI installer is lame for old timers). RedHat, Pentium? this is the linux-8086 mailing list, meant for pre-80386 machines and true XT clones. If you're interested, I've got a spare Philips NMS9100 here, it has a 5.25 inch drive plus a more modern 3.5 inch drive, no network, no hard disk. I think it is built around a true 8086. it should be able to run the ELKS kernel 0.0.81 out of the box. > Thanking you in advance! you're welcome. Mario
Redhat Linux6.o for athlon
Hi, Since I am new to Linux, I have a few questions before I buy myself a PC. I bought my self redhat linux 6.0 some time back. Is it possible to install this on a AMD Athlon processor? or do I have to get the 6.1 version? OR is it best to buy a PentiumIII processor with a BX board? Thanking you in advance! Nima
