I do have a comment on that one. You want to tell me that just because you
went through a living hell means that others should too when it comes to
repartioning and then doing FTP install. Well, bozo, not everyone has to
suffer the same as you did. I did not say that I was buying a cd burner. In
fact if you read my initial posts, you would have jumped to the wrong
conclusion, you f** idiot. besides, since you have collaborated with
microsoft, chances are they gave you a chance to backup without having to
pay a few hundred dollars. Also, think about this. Every few months, RH
releases a new CD which makes your previous version rather extinct. Now
think about having to pile up all the old versions. Got it? Probably not.
You're a mentally retarded MF as are the rest of these pathetic idiots
except for "Crossbones."

Hello Everybody,
I am having problems with my Creative Labs Vibra16X PnP and Linux.
It reconizes the card when I type sndconfig, I select my I/O, IRQ, and
DMA. It writes the file and when goes to play the sound clip, I get the
following message: "An error was encountered running the modprob
program"
I am running RH 5.1 with kernel 2.0.35. I have taken out all cards (NIC
and modem) that might confilict with the sound card. Does anybody have
any ideas?

Tim

Subject: a2ps problems

I have some problems with a2ps.
I use suse6.0 and bought a new Kyocera FS-800 Laserprinter with ps level
2 and have some serios problems getting this to run under linux.

First I got only empty pages (with lpr -l) or printer hang ups (or it
was not able to print one page in 2 hours) (with lp) printing my
.bashrc.
But I was able to print every ps-file I found on the distribution (ok, I
tried only 5 different) and was able to use the printer in hp lj4
emulation.
Now I tried to use a2ps directly and found out that I do not get a
printer hang up if I used -ni, but I only got an empty page. So I tried
other parameter and found out, that useing -ns got me something onto the
paper, but only the header and footer and not my .bashrc (and its not
empty).

So I downloaded a2ps 4.10.4 and installed it. Now I am able to print
directly with a2ps, but therefore lpr .bashrc does not work. I already
found out why: They changed almost every parameter for a2ps (for example
instead -nP you have to use -o- for printing to stdout). Now I have the
problem that my apsfilter filter-files are not correct for 4.10.4 and
have some problems converting them for 4.10.4.

Has somebody these filter-files configured for a2ps 4.10.4 or has
somebody an idea how to get the old (I think it was 4.3.4-34) a2ps to
print onto my printer?

Many thanks in advance,
Norbert

I'm looking for an inexpensive ($50 or less) PCMCIA/CardBus Ethernet card
that it either 10BaseT or combo and is known to work well with Linux - any
recommendations? I'm using an NEC Australia (FIC 6000) notebook with a
TI1131 CardBus controller.

I recall using a friend's "EXP" ethernet card that registered as a Relia
chipset and worked very well (NE2000 clone?). However, I haven't been able
to find that card...

Thanks,

I've got an older HP 837 system that I would like to experiment with
putting Linux (Caldera 1.3) on. It only has a couple gig hard drive and
about 65M memory, but I just want to try it out and get a feel for linux

I am new at this can you point me to any good resources/cook books etc.

Hello gentleman,

I just want to add, that NS-series tape drives have
one more difference from TR drives - Read-While-Write
capability (like DAT and 8mm do), i.e. secondary
tape pass for verifying isn't required; the head
contains read channel for immediate error detection.

i am using slackware v3.5 (w/ kernel 2.0.34). i am using EZ-BIOS
which is the Maxtor variant of EZ-DRIVE. Linux didn't do it w/
kernel 2.0.33, but it did w/ 2.0.34. when you install LILO, have
linux put it on the superblock of the linux partition, and w/ FDISK,
make your linux parition the active one. your computer should read
the first few tracks of the HD and read EZ-DRIVE, then it will boot
to the linux partition.

to run xfree86, you need an X server for your Diamond Fire card which I
assume has a PERMEDIA chipset.

download xglint.rpm from: (xglint.rpm is an Xserver gor GLINT, PERMEDIA &
PERMEDIA-2 based cards)
ftp://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/linux/suse/5.3/suse/xsrv3/
install by : rpm -i xglint.rpm

then download installation instructions from: (you may have to ignore some
of the non-applicable instructions)

Subject: I'm not making this up

My home pc has recently developed a rather strange condition... It's
definitely some kind of h/w quirk, with a peculiar Linux twist (only
happens under Linux), so I thought I'd share it.

First of all, there's nothing very special about my hardware setup --
it's pretty much a run-of-the-mill pc clone, a bit on the "legacy"
side, fortunately still under warranty. MB is an ATC w/VX chipset,
Intel Triton BM-IDE, a Caviar IDE HDD, ATAPI CD-ROM, Tseng ET6000 VGA,
48 MB EDO RAM. CPU is a Cyrix 166+. Worked fine for me for many
months, until it broke -- so here's the story.

It started with a CPU cooler failure, and the heat killed one of the
mainboard chips (so the technician said). So the mainboard was
replaced with another one of the same kind. That's when the funny
stuff starts.

Now everything works fine under DOS or W95 (well, as fine as that can
ever be...). But when I boot into linux, what first happens is
there's a strange pause (10 or 15 secs.) when the ide driver is
initialized. Then it goes on booting, and completes the boot sequence
with no errors or anything unusual. But when the login prompt is up
(no matter whether it's text console or xdm), I can't login -- the
keyboard is dead. That's right, no reaction at all to any kbd events
(including CapsLock, NumLock, whatever -- leds don't light up
either). I must repeat that the kbd shows no strange behavior
whatsoever under DOS, Windows, or BIOS setup.

It gets even funnier than that. Once about every 10 bootups (have no
idea what this depends on), there is no pause at ide initialization,
and the system seems to be working correctly. Nothing unusual in the
logfiles, either. Well, it does work correctly until I press either
CapsLock or NumLock -- ten the keyboard is dead again. The system as
such is working, though -- anything I can do with the mouse works
fine, and nothing is reported in the logfiles (it's a home box with no
facilities for remote access).

Bear with me, this isn't all yet... I again managed to boot up to a
(semi)working keyboard, brought up a text console, and figured I might
get some clue by running showkey(1) as 'showkey -s' to see what
happens when I press CapsLock or NumLock. And guess what: as long as
keycode is active, the kbd doesn't lock up, and the emitted scancodes
seem to be correct (to be sure, I didn't have a

Hmmm. Didn't know about that. Anyhow, whatever you do, don't get any modem
that says HP or HSP in it's name. They are WinModems and a) only work in
Windows, and b) just plain suck since the only reason they would be a WinModem
in the first place is to be cheap.

Hey all...

I personally like to read this and other Linux related newsgroups for the
same reasons many of your others do: To learn from one another and help one
another, if we are able of course... Unfortunatly, there is now a flame-fest
going on in this thread, and personally, I wish it would stop.

I am not attempting to flame anyone on either the majority users or DG's
side... I am just trying to clear the air... I mean, for many of us, USENET
is more than just newgroups... USENET is a way of life... And, like in the
real world, it is usually better for us to get along and become productive,
than to always be angry and everything get destroyed in a heartbeat...

To DG: I read your first post (the initial post that started this) that
requested help from the members of these groups. I was going to respond to
you, but I first (like usual) read the other people responses to your
responses and, to be honest with you, after re-reading all the posts of this
thread over and over again, I fail to understand why you are so upset with
us. In my opinion (and I'm sure yours and others will have differing ones), I
think many other people at first tried to help you find the easiest, least
time-consuming way to solve your original problem. To be honest with you, I
am all for the idea that one can log on to the net at any time and download
either patches, updates, or the whole smoe of the Linux OS for free. The fact
that it was originally made available by Mr. Torvaldes in the source code
format for free under the GPL is what has enable others and myself to legally
enhance and modify these sources and re-distribute them back on the net so
that others, in whatever way they can, can benefit from the total sum of our
collective knowledge. Now, Mr. DG, I have collaborated with Microsoft before
on several projects and beta testing surveys, and I personally can tell you
the frustration I felt when I needed to re-format my Windows par

Check the date on Xconfigurator; it may be the one from 3.3.2 and the
new
X libs confuse it. xf86config is, I think, part of the X distribution,
so
it would be updated at the same time X is.

This also happens on my 4M ViRGE/VX. It may be a bug in either Netscape
or
in the SVGA server. I just use 16 bpp

DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE 3.3.2! That'll blow away the corresponding 3.3.3
files!

Moral: next time use the UPDATE switch on RPM, rpm -Uvh
xfwhateverrpm

-i with --force is nearly always a mistake, and will have this result.
If
you want to clean it up, uninstall both and reinstall 3.3.3 OR (and you
may
as well try this if you have nothing to lose) reinstall 3.3.3 WITH THE
UPDATE
SWITCH this time. This might straighten everything out (or, of course,
it
might not...).

The "accel" servers include XF86_S3, -_Mach64, -_W32 and so on. There's
a general long-term move to roll everything into the -_SVGA server,
which
is where the new G200 support is. In 3.3.3, for example, XF86_S3V is no
longer the recommended server for ViRGE, although it's still provided;
XFree recommends using the SVGA server which contains ViRGE (and Matrox)
acceleration. There's no separate "accel" server for G100/G200, but
don't fret: SVGA drives the card as fast as anything could (which, I
understand, is pretty damn fast; I envy you).

You might want to take a look at the XF 3.3.3 release notes and other
documentation at http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.3 . Also, for your
amusement
and edification, I have an SVGA server at the URL below which supports
True Type fonts, and I'd appreciate someone testing it on a new Matrox
to see if it works (hint, hint).

Best wishes for the New Year,

Craig

In fact, believe stock kernel (RH 5.0+) already supports AGP cards. I use
RH5.0 with a SiS6326 AGP 4MB card, with a Suse driver, not the XFree driver (
SiS not supported) - and it works just fine.

I can't get redhat to recognize my ethernet card. I have a Intel
EtherExpress Pro/10 ISA card which is listed as a Tier 2 supported card
on redhats page. I tried installing rh 5.1 from cd rom and the 5.2 ftp
disk images, both install programs won't detect my card on autoprobe or
when i specify settings. Although I don't know the exact format for the
settings. I've tried using both
io=0x230, irq=3
and
ether=3,0x230,eth0
and neither worked.
Any suggestions?
thanx,

I'm having problems using my Mustek flatbed 1200SP scanner. It seems

get the damn thing to work.
I have installed sane through Red Hat Utilities but when I type in

I'm not sure what all of this means and of course I'm some what of a

Can anyone help?

In the past Iiyama had a good rep, though cheaper than the competition in the
UNIX world. Dunno about now.

You might want to look at the Viewsonic PS790, which is the 'professional' 19"
monitor produced by ViewSonic for the CAD/CAM market. It has many of the same
specs as the G790, but it has a .25 dot pitch instead of .26, though the
bandwidth seems lower (158 vs. 200).

> Optiquest V95
I don't know anything about his.

You might also look at the Nokia 446Xpro. Before I went to a 21" Nokia, I had
a 17" ViewSonic, and then went to a 17" Nokia. It was amazing the difference
in clarity between the two (and the clarity between the Mag I'm currently using
on my home machine and the ViewSonic was also amazing with the ViewSonic coming
in better, but less than the Nokia -- in monitors, you tend to get what you pay
for). Of course at the time, the Nokia was going for 1000, and the ViewSonic
about 700 (IIRC, in terms of 19" monitors, the Nokia is about $100 more than
the ViewSonic).
