I have an HP Pavilion which has been running Windows 98SE and RedHat 7.0
for some time now. Suddenly, it will no longer boot from the hard
drive. It also will not boot from either the windows cd or a windows
boot floppy disk. It WILL boot from the RedHat install disk and from a
RedHat boot floppy. Once it has booted, I can see that the data is
still on the disk and it looks like its ok.

I am guessing this is a bad boot sector on my disk, but I can't
understand why a bad boot sector on the HD would keep a windows floppy
from booting the computer.

Has anyone seen this before? Is there any solution which does not
involve buying a new hard drive?

Thanks
James

You need a bootdisk if you want to use the HPT controller
http://sweb.uky.edu/~mabran3/linux/hpt/
it worked for me :=)

Will Red Hat install on a RAID ATA66/100 controller? I have a beautiful
new
custom built computer, Athlon TBird 900, ABIT KT7RAID, 2 IBM 765GXP Hard
Drives on the RAID controllers. Partitioned and formatted for a linux
partition to install the RH6.2 that came on CD in the back of my textbook
for
next term. Got the error message -- no valid devices found for
filesystem.
I wondered if 6.2 wouldn't work, but 7.0 might, and then I see another
post
here with someone in exactly the same pickle with 7.0 -- wondering if the
 problem is his ATA66 controllers.

The RedHat site's Compatibility List is just no help at all, as far as I
can
 determine.

Yes, you can install linux on a system which already has OS/2 and
dual-boot between them. You can use either lilo or IBM's Boot
Manager to handle this job.

 Have you had
trouble mounting the hpfs partitions to read and copy files from those
partitions? I had to change the file type parameter in the properties
menues of the icons with which I wanted to have access to these
partitions. No go. Error message was totally unhelpful, listing various
reasons for not mounting the partition.

Do you have hpfs support enabled in linux? You can compile it as
a module in the linux kernel configuration. Do note, however,
that the default hpfs support that comes with the kernel is
read-only. You have to pick up read-write support separately and
recompile the module if you intend to write to your hpfs
filesystem from linux.

So which OS do i install first?

Install Win98 first, otherwise it will stomp on linux' boot
loader.

And what partition is needed for noth

Does anyone know how to configure the ghostscript print filters (Version
4.0?) under RedHat 5.2 to print at 720dpi on an Epson Stylus 740? If so,
 please reply.

If you update your ghostscript package to v5.10 or newer it
includes support for the Epson Stylus Color printer series.
Is there a reason you need to use v4.0?

Of course, you either put this into an alias/script, or use the lazy version

find | grep -i filenamewithoutcase

This is an excellent example of why developers like Unix so much. It is fast
and compact, and it will work as expected.

It is also only suitable for a very small number of people. It is quite
intuitive for programmers, engineers and scientists; it would be
 incomprehensible to artists and linguists.

I have an old 486DX2 that I need memory for. I'm pretty sure it's non-edo
because it's so old so I'd like to know where I can get this sort of memory
and how much it would cost. Is it worth buying non-edo memory or will it cost
the same werer I to buy a new motherboard and buy less expensive edo memory?
