("Niels Christoffers") From: Mark Baker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Serial speeds higher than 115200 bps Date: Fri, 15 Jan 1999 11:48:52 + I have an isdn line which allows data throughput at 64kbps or 128kbps uncompressed. I also have a TA and high speed serial card in my Linux box which both talk at up to 460Kbps. Problem is how to get linux to talk over 115200bps. I tried altering serial.c but it appears that the speed limitation might be deeper in the kernel code or libC. How do I get higher speeds (apart from using Win95 - :-((( )? It is a shame to have the bandwidth and to be unable to use it. Regards. Mark Baker NB. However, it doesn't seem to load the PCMCIA module when booting up. When I run lsmod, PCMCIA is not included. I have read that RH 5.1 does not necessarily activate PCMCIA support as default. Any help on activating? Date: Fri, 15 Jan 1999 13:14:24 -0500 I am totally new to Linux and have a few questions: 1. Can I install Linux on a system with Win98? - I have a 1.6 gig HDD empty and would like to install Linux on it, I have a 3.5 gig HDD and have all my Win98 stuff on it. I want to install Linux and have the option of which OS to boot. I need Linux for a programming class but need Win98 for everything else. I have an AMD k6-2 (350 MHz) CPU, and all IDE disk drives. 2. Is Linux the same as UNIX? (in terms of commands?) However it just reads one record. > And then does what? Wild guess here, based on mainframe tape experience, but... Maybe it's a labelled tape, and you're hitting the EOF marker after the first label set? Labelled tapes have the general format VOL1 HDR1 HDR2 * user data * EOF1 EOF2 * * where "*" is a hardware EOF mark ("tape mark", a special data block that the hardware recognizes). Voln, HDRn and EOFn are 80-byte labels containing useful information such as the tape volume number (in VOL1), and dataset name and data format (including blocksize and record length) in the HDR labels. Two consequtive *'s flag end of recorded data. *NO* (sane) tape driver will let you read past that. [Unless you are in a privileged mode ("bypass albel processing"), but we all know that we _don't_ do normal processing as the moral equivalent of "root" now, don't we? :-) ] If you're hitting the EOF marker, perhaps your tape driver is returning an error? And won't let you get past it? You _are_ assuming 80 byte data records, which might also be too small. Depending upon the driver, reading only a partial block might be considered an "error" (and prevent further reading.) As might reading a block that is shorter than expected. Tapes are so much fun. :-) You're reading a 9-track tape (the 6250 density indicated this.) I'd guess that it _is_ a labelled tape, unless you have specific evidence that is is not.
